Let me start off by saying that I trust the current coaching staff (certainly, at least Whiz) and I'm more willing to trust the FO these days.
I think the days of us pinning our hopes on Fred Wakefield to significantly contribute from the DE position are over (but monty freaking Biesel? Really?)
And even if we do take a step back this year, which I'm saying is only probable, not an absolute certainty, I think we will rebuild into team that will win the NFC west again in maybe say, two years.
But I see this team as weaker than last year's version at some key spots, and, without improvement in other areas to compensate for these declines.
And I'm not just saying this after watching the first half of last night's game (but I do think we pretty much got smoked in the ones vs. the ones). I've followed the team pretty carefully all off-season and training camp.
So as fans, I think we need to buckle up for a bumpy 2010, learn some patience, and continue to support the team and FO, even if we go 7-9.
I know, I know, "don't have a defeatist attitude", but what I'm typing now won't affect our team's performance, I mean, seriously.
I just don't want everyone freaking out during the bye week if we go 2-4 in the first six games.
I just don't want to see everyone jumping off the bandwagon if we have one year where we go 8-8.
This is a much improved organization that is committed to winning in a league that really promotes parity. If this isn't our year, we'll have our shot again soon enough.
But I also want to temper our expectations. I see a lot of exuberance on the board about this team. Some of it deserved (e.g. the discussions about toller's potential), some of it, eh, not so much.
Heres why we might step back this year:
LB core - porter's an upgrade over Berry, but otherwise this unit took a significant step back.
Dline - okay we might be better here, based on the addition of williams, but this is still pretty much the same group that we played last year.
Oline - starting to get worried about this unit. Last year we had a string of 30 consecutive starts by the same five. We knew what we had. This year, we're unproven and untested at both tackles, and I saw matty pretty much running for his life last night. Based on what I heard from training camp, what I saw last night, and my limited knowledge of oline play. I don't think were going to be as good here as we were last year.
QB - this is the coup de gras. I like matty. He's my second favorite player behind Bennie. But for Christ's sake, Warner would regularly throw perfect games, and is headed for HOF. Even if if Matt plays very good , he still won't equal Warner's performance, and were talking about the most important position on the field.
You add it all up and well... Hope I'm wrong. I've been a die hard fan since '76, and when I retire and my kids are grown, I'll be hanging out at training camp and games with you all (if you'll have me). Just don't want us to be too disappointed if things go south this year.
