Bidwills have owned this team for 75 years & are tired of starting from scratch every 4 years. Year to year league? Shanahan won 6 games in year 1, then 2 games in year 2. But, they accomplished their goal of getting rid of those players that didn’t fit their new culture. In year 3, they went 13-3 & went to the SB. During those first 2 seasons, the Niners didn’t spend much in FA & built directly through the draft. That’s the path the Cardinals are trying to follow.

This narrative about the Niners is dead wrong. The Niners actually spent a lot in those first two years in FA and made a huge trade to get Jimmy G. I detailed all of it last season in a post showing just how active they were in FA, improving in year 1 from a 2 win team to 6 wins immediately, with a lot of FA guys and making a huge trade for Jimmy G and handing him a contract that made him one of the highest paid QBs in the league. The reason they only won 2 games the next year is because they got slaughtered by injuries.

We did nothing like the Niners in Shananahan’s first season or his second off-season. And we didn’t improve in Monti’s first season from a record better than the previous season winning a wretched 4 with Keim in his last disastrous year and 4 with Monti’s first year.

Now, hopefully the bajillion picks we made this year turn the tide for us, but there is nothing showing that we’re following any kind of Niners model that got them to where they are now or were in Shanny’s second and third seasons.

First, we didn’t lose a star QB in Year 2. Murray was out in Year 1 with Monti. It’s really hard to have a solid discussion when you’re this demonstrably wrong about basic facts about our own team.

As for the Niners not losing their “star” QB in Year 2, Try again. The Niners lost Jimmy G, their starting QB who they just traded for and just signed one of the biggest contracts of all time in year 2. That’s why they went from something like 6-0 after getting Jimmy in Shanny’s first year before going 2-14 or 4-12 without him in Year 2.

Also, Murray hasn’t been a “star” since the second half of 2021. That was three years ago dude.

I wouldnt categorize the Niners as a team built through FA.

Most of their core was still drafted by the team. They made savvy trades and a few, well placed FA signings, but mostly they have been built through the draft. Boss, Aiyuk, Kittle, Deebo, Fred Warner, and Purdy were all draft picks. McCaffrey and Trent Williams were good trades. The only big time free agent they have was Javon Hargrave.

What this ultimately means though is that the draft won't be enough. Monti will have to pivot and start using more avenues to find players. I get that he wants to maintain flexibility early on, but he can't just draft his way to a championship.

Arguably this is one of the hardest positions to get. It's not like good pass rushers are just growing on trees out there. The DC is going to have to draw up better pass rush schemes. Probably going to have to trade or pick up a cast off. Loading up on draft picks, they need to draft more of these guys.

Tough. It's Moti's job to do it and I'm not cutting him any breaks. If he had tried to get some other top edge prospects in here, through trades or FA, and it didn't work out, you can cut him some slack. But he basically drafted Beej, shrugged, and said "I'm good" for two years.
