Our secondary is reaching historically pathetic levels.
Isn't that cause and effect thing right there?.. hey guys, don't give up the big play...in turn causing them to play timid and softer coverage.Coaches don't tell guys to play soft, they tell you not to give up the big play. There is a difference in that. CBs are taught to read route combinations and situational tendencies.
Here is an example from today. K Peterson is across from Julio on 3rd and long. He plays soft coverage and gives up the first down afraid of getting beat deep. This, however, is not the smart play. You know they aren't going to run a double move on third down because they know you should not be jumping short routes and a double move at the sticks will take too long. Yes, they could run a vertical route, but that is a more difficult route which takes more time and they don't know if you have help over the top. The play is shorten your cushion but still backpedal agressively to the first down depth. This keeps the WR in front and enables yo uto drive on the ball and tackle the WR short of the marker. Peterson just bailed because he was worried about Julie going 60 yards on him over the top even though it wasn't the situation for it. On 2nd and 3, that would be a concern and you would adjust your positioning accordingly.
Vance Joseph has the softest defensive scheme I have ever seen. Why do we never play press coverage? The Cb's are 12 yards off the line every snap, of course the ball is getting completed...
Can't count on the defense, can't count on interception, need to invent new ways to get the ball back.
You're right! Watching today it was plain as anything. We simply dont have the personnel to play Man without PP and even with him, it will be tough.
.
There was nothing wrong with the scheme today, we simply don't have the guys to guard NFL caliber WR's and TE's.
That would be John McKay who was coaching the Bucs at the time. One knocked down pass all day. Lee Mayberry had a better defense on a Pop Warner team than this team does.
As a famous coach once said of his team when a reporter ask about the team's execution, "I'm in favor of it."
Chandler Jones
Corey Peters
Jordan Hicks
Patrick Peterson
Byron Murphy
These are 5 legit dudes on a good defense. Too early to tell on Zack Allen or the Thompsons. Brock is an ok 3rd CB. Baker is an enigma for me. Gunter is the Cassius Marsh/Brooks Reed of 3-4 DEs. Depth only. Reddick reminded me that he is our new DJ Swearinger.
Look at the bright side, we’ve been the only team without an interception all season. We are now the only team in the league without an interception.
Reddick can't cover a TE for $#\+ lol. He's always a step slow figuring out that he needs to cover, by then it's too late.
He does look improved in a few areas but covering a TE isn't one of them lol. I think he should be a DE honestly. This Sunday against the Giants, VJ should grab one of our CB's & say "your job is to cover the TE no matter where he goes on the field son" lol.He was not good this game in that regard. But then not covering a TE has plagued the Cards for many years.

IDK what is up with our LB corps, but they are terrible. Our only hope is that CJ and TS can get to the QB instantly so we can get a stop, cuz there aint no getting around it, guys are gonna be open.
We need a major revamp of our 2ndary.

Offensive adjustments.I was rewatching the game and on the Falcons second drive in the first quarter, the D was perfect. Reddick was on top of everything and Murphy played Jones perfectly. Why would the D change up their scheme from how they played that second drive?
This. It's what drove us bonkers about Clancy P. I can only hope I'm wrong on this going forward...just the way it felt the past couple weeks.I was rewatching the game and on the Falcons second drive in the first quarter, the D was perfect. The toughest part about the offensive line is that we all know it has average players on it. The scheme and Murray's development seems to be able to mitigate that lack of talent to a certain degree. If that is the case, we do have to start considering that we may look at other options in the first round of next years draft. Same for WR to be honest. It is a deep class, and if there is not a huge difference between the 2nd and 5th rated WRs, why not look at defense early?Man, I was all on drafting Wirfs 100%, but Epenesa is right there as well....
I don't think it will happen unless a guy like Vic Fangio gets fired and comes available. Kingsbury and Keim are not going to want to go away from a 3-4 scheme again, and the list of 3-4 coaches easily considered an upgrade over Joseph is pretty slim.Thinking the way things are going Vance Joseph going to have a short tenure in Arizona.
