Both guys were running free through the secondary at times last year and the QBs couldn't deliver them the ball.

True, although upgrading both would be ideal. In lieu of upgrading the QB position, upgrading the WR position wouldn't be a bad idea. We should have plenty of money.

I agree 100%.

Doucet proved that he could stay healthy for an entire season. That was his biggest question mark coming into the season.

He put up numbers comparable to other #2 WRs around the league.

Doucet has clearly separated himself from Roberts as the true #2 WR on this team.

who the hell were you guys watching this year? Doucet is a non-factor who can't even stay on his own feet or make a big catch when it matters.

How desperate are you to be making this argument? THE CARDS WERE 7-2 OVER THEIR LAST 9 GAMES, but you think this team needs a serious roster rethink to improve over 8-8?

They're getting back a promising RB, fist round NT, staring cornerback, and hopefully a healthy FS in Rhodes that they didn't have in their final run. How far away do you think this team really is?

Again, you can ignore the fact that free agent WRs rarely live up to their billings on new teams. I guess doing something for the sale of having done it is a good idea. I mean, it brought us Kevin Kolb and his 3-14 record as a starter.

What reason is there to think that Meachem is "more talented" than Doucet? They were equally productive this year, despite Meachem having vastly superior quarterback play.

How much longer do you think the Cards can win games 19-13 or 21-19? I think we have the defense to join the top teams in the NFL allowing 17 ppg but with that offense can the Cards score enough to win?

As for Doucet, I just don't think he brings much to the offense. He doesn't have a size advantage, he isn't quick, he doesn't run over people, he doesn't have exceptional catching ability. He's just nothing special.

54 catches and 5 touchdowns. "Knows the offense" and the quarterbacks.

Like Breaston.

Wrong.

In 5 seasons, Breaston has played less than 15 games once, (13) and has 4 seasons that are better than Doucet's best.

Who would you rather have?

More consistent play from the QB would deliver the same results. What's more likely: both Roberts and Doucet are incapable starters, or Kolb and Skelton made both of them look worse than they are?

Agreed.

Still would like another big body out there.

I would like to see another shifty Wes Welker type.

:mulli:

We already have 2 of those. You know, the two you are defending on this thread.

Welker is great, and those big TE's open things up for him. Not to mention they both make big time plays when needed.

I don't think you have seen Welker play if you think Doucet is like Welker.

Still nothing special.

Doucet couldn't even get half as many yards as Fitz. David Nelson with Buffalo had the same numbers and I never heard of him. Some yahoo named Titus Young had more TDs. Another yahoo named Brandon LaFell had more catches over 20 yards. 15 Tight Ends had more yards receiving. Laurent Robinson had as many catches. Laurent Robinson????

Breaston replaced Boldin 700 yards. Doucet replaced Breaston 700 yards. 700 with 'em. 700 without 'em.

:p

I actually agree wholeheartedly with K-9 on this one. Doucet knows the system and is very competant IMO.

We have something special at WR already. His name is Larry Fitzgerald. We have another something potentially special at TE named Rob Housler. You don't need every offensive weapon to be special, you need one guy to be special to be competent, two guys to be excellent.

In New Orleans, that's Brees and Graham.
In Texas, it's Andre Johnson and Arian Foster.
In Green Bay, it's Rodgers and Jennings (Finley is special but there's nothing special about Nelson or their other WR--they're no better or worse than Doucet).
In New England, it's Gronkowski and Brady.

You are going to pay Meachem or Simpson or whomever 15% more to come here than you'd be paying Doucet to stay. Why does everyone think that Doucet is going to demand more money than these guys, when wanting him to stay is a minority opinion?

It doesn't matter who you have on the outside as long as you continue to expose your crappy QBs and not run the ball. Does San Francisco have anyone special on the outside? Does Baltimore (be honest)?

The offense isn't going to improve until the team commits to running the ball first or finds more consistent play at the QB position. I expect that the plan is to bring everyone back and hope that a full offseason's work with Skelton and Kolb move one or both of them into the Middle Tier of quarterbacks in the NFL. I know that this staff has no interest in pounding the rock, regardless of what their acquisitions on the offensive line suggest.

Lets start with week 1 where Doucet caught a 70 yard TD to tie the Panthers in the fourth quarter.

Malcom Floyd ?

Huh? what?

Please tell me you wouldnt try to fit a hurt and nver healthy Malcolm Floyd into this team. Floyd is good when he isnt hurt (which is almost always) but Skelton to floyd isnt the same as Rivers to Floyd. That is a waste of money.

Good arguement except the Nelson thing, Kid is special. Big, physical and fast. Say bye bye to Jennings and your new NFC pro bowler after next year.

In short I sign Meachem over Doucet because he brings a DIFFERENT set of skills to an offense that needs as many DIFFERENT types of weapons as poissible. He makes plays down the field rather than in the middle of the field. He forces safeties to play back rather than up which greatly effects the run game.

New Orleans also has Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Lance Moore and Devery Henderson.

Texans have Jacoby Jones, and Owen Daniels.

Packers have Jordy Nelson and James Jones, both players that stretch the field.

Patriots have Welker and Aaron Hernandez.

If your point is that you don't have to spend a bunch of money to establish a solid passing game, then you are correct. But, that doesn't justify throwing 20 million at a player like Early Doucet whose stats are easily replaceable for half the price. (20 million was mentioned on another thread)

Facts are that Doucet is a totally replaceable player who doesn't bring anything unique to this team other than a knowledge of the offense. Unless he is willing to sign for a minimal amount, he isn't worth resigning even if it means drafting his replacement in the middle rounds.
