let me ask you this question...if you heard the Cardinals gave up 2.5 million dollars in cap room next year for a conditional 7th round or 6th round pick, would you happy about that move?

Addition by subtraction... It happens. And in this case, I'm totally ok with it!

artful dodge of the question. especially considering they could have done the subtraction this year by cutting him without subtracting from next years cap as well, no?

Cutting him would not have brought back a pick...

then, again, will you answer my question? Would you trade 2.5 million bucks in cap room for a possible 7th or 6th rounder next year? or would you rather just cut Levi and then have 2.5 million dollars to upgrade the team next year, as opposed to having 2.5 less, but having an extra 7th or 6th round pick (which would cost 1/5 that).

We gained additional cap room this year, got rid of a schmo in Brown and picked up a pick next season. Works for me!

so, you'd trade cap room for this season, which pretty much is as is, for a low pick and hurting our cap room next season?

would you change your tune is they don't use the cap room this season to extend anyone?

Yes - I would make that trade off given the person being traded...

And while I don't believe I would change my tune, I would be surprised if they don't put some of that additional cap space to use this season.
Sowell played very well today and the Cards are 3 & 2 with back to back wins. I am trusting SK and BA!

If we would get a sixth round selection and we pick another Ellington, I wouldn't have a problem with it.;)

Or maybe we could get another Reggie Wells. Now if they waste it on an Aggie I would have a problem with it. :p

Yeah, considering he was a sixth round and we wasted a first round on Brown, maybe a sixth is better than a first?:D

A consideration is that CAP space in 2013 carries over to 2014.

P.S. A sixth rounder is speculation at this point. Who knows, it may be a fifth.

Or Jay Novacek. Selected in the 6th round in 1985. Oh wait he was only good for Dallas.

The best 6th round pick the Cards have had in the last 30 years was Reggie Wells who started at Guard for us for 6 seasons including both playoff years.

I'm a die hard Cardinal fan and Cardinal history buff and I don't recognize half the guys they took in the 6th round. Except for Brett Wallerstadt who I though was a steal at the time. Little did I know. Hey Zack Walz was also a 6th. So was Jabarri Issa.

Anyone remember Mike Foley or Anthony Bridges? Any OU fans remember Brian Brauninger or Jon Phillips or Thomas Lott? All 6th round selections of the Cardinals.

doesn't change the fact that we limited oursevles in 2013.

and a 6th rounder is probably speculation on the high side at this point. We got Palmer for a 7th...that's a QB. do you really believe we unloaded a pretty awful LT for more then the going rate for a bad QB? and i know...we can't "know" because we're not in there, but you've seen enough of these trades go down and doesn't it seem logically that a 5th would be pretty unusual for a player of levi's value?

and even if it's a 5th...would you spend 2.5 million dollars to get an extra 5th round pick?

I would imagine that the pick is contingent on snaps; so who knows.

Levi's $$$ was guaranteed in 2013 after game one, and his prorated bonus had to be accounted for under the CAP whether he was traded or released now or after the season.

I would think that are CAP guru was familiar with all of the contingencies before the trade was made, and turning some of the $$$ owed into a bonus was considered the best way to manage things given the possibility of extensions in this league year.

We didn't spent an EXTRA $2.5m to get rid of him, etc.

Cheese, according to what's been published (which I quoted earlier) the Cardinals GAINED $3M in cap space in 2013.

They lose $2.3M NEXT year. Between the likelihood that they will extend contracts this year and the opportunity to carry unused cap space into next year, there is NO downside to that. It's a net gain in space and gives the team MORE flexibility in 2013.

What we (think we) know is that the Cards sent a pick to the Steelers. Obviously the lowest that pick could be is a 7th. The Cards get a pick in return. If any teams have ever swapped picks in the SAME round BEFORE knowing the draft order at any time in NFL history, please post a link because I can't imagine what the point of doing so could possibly be.

Assuming that is not the case here, obviously the Cardinals must be getting back at least a 6th. Since we know the pick is conditional, the implication is that it COULD be higher. I can't imagine more than a 5th even if Brown plays every snap from here out, the Steelers win the Super Bowl, and Levi is named MVP. So logic dictates that the Cards gave a 7th and get back a 6th or 5th.

Of course nobody knows this for sure, but if you think that some other scenario is plausible i'd like to hear it. Otherwise your fears are understandable given that we're all suffering from battered fan syndrome, but they're unsubstantiated.

Was Levi and his salary worth a 5th to ANYONE? Of course not. But for the NFL minimum, is he worth the difference between a 6th and a 7th? Apparently one team thought so, and kudos to the FO for getting something.

After all the years of justified complaints about the cheap Bidwills and boneheaded FO moves, yours would be the first complaint EVER about the team spending their cash to improve both the salary cap situation and their draft position. I don't get it Cheesy.

Haha, agree, I meant complaining about the cap hit or whatever.
