Buzz from different publications:

TO PHOENIX: RW Lee Stempniak

TO TORONTO: A fourth-round draft pick and a seventh-round draft pick

The skinny: The Coyotes get another forward who should help, and as a result win this trade. It's a bit surprising Brian Burke was not able to get more than two picks for Stempniak, who joins a Phoenix club that is hot on the playoff trail.

TO COLORADO: C Peter Mueller, LW Kevin Porter

TO PHOENIX: LW Wojtek Wolski

The skinny: The Coyotes win this one right away, as Wolski, with 17 goals, is five short of his career high of 22 and has the ability to be a threat every time he is on the ice. Mueller’s heart has come into question, as he has not been the same player since scoring 22 goals as a rookie two seasons ago. There have been whispers that Wolski and Avs coach Joe Sacco did not see eye-to-eye, hence the deal. Porter will provide depth for the Avalanche.

TO PHOENIX: D Derek Morris

TO BOSTON: Fourth-round draft pick in 2011

The skinny: The Coyotes take this one, as Morris, with three goals and 22 assists in 58 games, will add a bit of offence to the blue line. What’s interesting, though, is the Coyotes already have several offensive-minded defencemen in Keith Yandle, Ed Jovanovski and Adrian Aucoin. Morris will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, so the Bruins win in a sense as well, as they won’t lose Morris and get nothing in return.

TO PHOENIX
Petteri Nokelainen, RW
TO ANAHEIM
2011 6th round pick

ANALYSIS: Petteri Nokelainen bumps Wojtek Wolski as the highest player drafted in the first round of 2004 to be traded on deadline day, 2010.

Nokelainen went 16th overall once upon a time to the Islanders (Wolski was taken 21st overall by Colorado) and has been busy not living up to that potential ever since. You have to believe Phoenix is acquiring him in the hopes he can provide some steady minutes rather than banking on any late-blooming at this point. Winner: Phoenix. - RD

TO RANGERS
Anders Eriksson, D
TO PHOENIX
Miika Wiikman, G; 2011 7th round pick

ANALYSIS: Anders Eriksson has played more games in the AHL and in Europe over the past six years than in the NHL. And he blew Toronto’s chances to make it to the Cup final in 2002 by being in the middle of a brutal giveaway in a series-deciding overtime game. Why you’d want to add a guy like this, even if all you’re moving is a small, 26-year-old ECHL goalie is beyond me. Winner: Phoenix. - RB

TO PHOENIX
Alexandre Picard, LW
TO COLUMBUS
Chad Kolarik, RW

ANALYSIS: A swap of prospects saw Columbus deal 2004 first-round pick Alexandre Picard to Phoenix for forward Chad Kolarik.

Picard, selected fourth overall by the Blue Jackets, has played 67 NHL games but never has managed to stick with the big team and currently skates for Columbus’ American League affiliate in Syracuse.

Kolarik, Phoenix’s seventh pick (199th overall) in 2004, sits second on the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate with 17 goals. If either player realizes their potential, the team they do it with becomes the winner of this deal. Winner: Washington. - EF

TO PHOENIX
Lee Stempniak, LW
TO TORONTO
Matt Jones, D; 2010 4th round pick; 2010 7th round pick

ANALYSIS: Phoenix has proved to be the big mover and shaker on the day, with the latest deal being the acquisition of right winger Lee Stempniak from Toronto in exchange for fourth and seventh round draft picks.

Stempniak looked like a promising goal-scorer as a young member of the St. Louis Blues, but took a step back once dealt to Toronto last season. He showed a lot of hustle this season, however, and was even given power play and penalty-killing duties. Having said that, the Leafs have one of the worst PK units in the NHL.

As a UFA this summer, Stempniak comes with little commitment for Phoenix and the Coyotes will hope they get the Stempniak of St. Louis, not Toronto. He can definitely contribute in the right situation.

For the Leafs, all draft picks are good draft picks; getting a fourth- and a seventh-rounder is decent return for a player who largely disappointed. Interestingly enough, Stempniak was one of the last players acquired by the Leafs before GM Brian Burke was hired. Winner: Phoenix. - RK

TO PHOENIX
Mathieu Schneider, D
TO VANCOUVER
Sean Zimmerman, D; conditional 2010 draft pick

ANALYSIS: The Vancouver Canucks were expected to move Mathieu Schneider if there was a deal to be had. Schneider had missed time to injury and was demoted to American League Manitoba in January.

At this point in his career, Schneider is a pure power play specialist and he’ll join an intriguing defense corps in Phoenix that already includes Ed Jovanovski and Keith Yandle. Winner: Phoenix. - RB.

TO COLORADO
Peter Mueller, RW; Kevin Porter, RW
TO PHOENIX
Wojtek Wolski, LW

ANALYSIS: Colorado ownership has been reluctant to spend money this season and the trading of pending RFA Wojtek Wolski to Phoenix confirms that. While Peter Mueller is also an RFA at season’s end, he’s having a poor season and is already making $1.1 million less than Wolski, so he’ll be much cheaper to keep on.

Wolski is having a career year on Colorado’s second unit and is on pace to score more than 20 goals and 60 points. It’s surprising the Avs would trade such a productive player as they close in on the playoffs and hope to make a push for home-ice advantage, but the team is clearly still focusing on the health of the franchise long-term even with this year’s success.

Wolski will be an offensive upgrade for Phoenix and immediately becomes the team’s leading point-getter along with Shane Doan at 47 points. The Coyotes have enjoyed a breakthrough season on the back of strong team defense and the goaltending of Ilya Bryzgalov, but needed an offensive upgrade in a big way; they rank 25th in the NHL in goals-for per game.

The Avs are banking on Mueller, 21, to bounce back from his atrocious season and recapture his form from his 54-point rookie season, though his production has declined each year in the NHL.

Kevin Porter was Phoenix’s fifth-ranked prospect in THN’s Future Watch issue this year. A Hobey Baker Award winner with Michigan, Porter is a smallish right winger and further bolsters Colorado’s pipeline of youth.

“He can make plays, kill penalties, hasn’t quite found that regular niche yet,” Coyotes GM Don Maloney said for Future Watch. Winner: Phoenix. - RB

TO PHOENIX
Derek Morris, D
TO BOSTON
2011 conditional pick

ANALYSIS: Moving Derek means Dennis needs to step up. The Bruins moved Derek Morris to Phoenix – where he played from March of 2004 until March of last year – for a fourth round pick. Morris, traded for the third time at the deadline now, was second in scoring among Bruins defensemen with three goals and 25 points in 58 games. Boston is starved for offense and Dennis Wideman was supposed to provide more of it from the back end this season, but that simply hasn’t happened.

In that regard, it seems like a strange decision for the Bruins to move a blueliner who could wind up with 35 points this year, but Morris has always had his defensive warts and Boston coach Claude Julien is a no-nonsense guy when it comes to taking care of home base.

Phoenix obviously knows what it’s getting in Morris, whose annual contract of $3.3 million expires in July. Getting six weeks – maybe more – of offensive upside from Morris is a gamble worth taking for the Coyotes. Especially for a fourth-rounder. Winner: Phoenix. - RD

Craig MacTavish: From a team that was virtually written off at the start of the year, for the Phoenix Coyotes to add five guys at this time and really have a push, not only to get into the playoffs, but to solidify your position going into the playoffs, is great.

I like what they did up front - Wojtek Wolski has a real opportunity to be a good player for them if he gets his consistency and work ethic night in and night out.

Lee Stempniak is another guy who has had pedigree. He was an abject failure in Toronto for a lot of reasons, but he has the pedigree and has an opportunity. Petteri Nokelainen seems like a throw-in but he's not a bad player, he's a serviceable player, a big strong player.

Derek Morris on the back-end, I'm not completely convinced on him right there. Mathieu Schneider was good a number of years ago. I think I would have gone with the rosary beads and prayed for help on the power play. But he's a good guy, a good guy in the locker room and he can shoot the puck and so forth, but I think that bird might have flown.

How nice was it for Wolski to score the game winner versus the Avs with 20 seconds left in his first game as a 'yote?!

stempniak also scored in the game

well done guys - i think those are all excellent moves - i think maloney has done a terrific job since coming on board

With how well the team is going, it's a shame that they still only get one thread going here.

Yet another road win over the playoff-spot-desperate Lightning last night, 2-1.

It's a shame the team isn't getting more attention...it's amazing what they're doing. For a team most predicted to be the worst in the NHL, they have a legit shot at the #1 seed IN THE WEST. It's really unbelievable.

Yeah, it's too bad there isn't much interest here, but there are some good boards out there for chatting Coyotes. Maybe a deep run in the second season could get folks talking. I know I'm loving it! :D

There is other boards where there is interest. I gave up trying to post here about the coyotes. Wanted to have a game day thread for each game to talk about that game and the goings on, but was told to keep it in a season long thread where people have to sift through everything in one thread.

Fact is this team rocks and have been clawing and scratching and playing there asses off. There is so much to talk about regarding this team. GMDM, Coach Tippett, all the players, past trades.

But I just don't think the interest is here on this board. I wish there was, I've followed this team since there last year in Winnipeg and was a former season ticket holder.

They will be showing more games starting saturday on Fox Sports AZ, The past week games have been free on NHL Center Ice not sure when it ends.

If your a Card fan or a casual fan that watches hockey here a there. Give this team a chance. There close to playing for the division lead, A home advantage playoff series at the very least in the first round. They have beaten most of the top teams in hockey year and just find ways to win.

Good luck boys and keep it up.

I'm one of those casual fans.

Slowly but surely, Arizona sports fans ARE starting to take notice. I actually tried to find one of their games recently and was disappointed that it wasn't being aired. This should be taken as a good sign because I would not consider myself a hockey fan in general. After the strike and then the BK/move talk I wrote this team off. And yet, here I am, checking this board to see what's going on with the team and surfing the listings to try and watch a game and even talking to my wife about trying to take the kids to go see a game.

Keep it up!

I am also a casual fan who has started to take notice. I went to one game already this season vs. the Red Wings and I hope to make it to another. The problem for me is the lack of games televised on FSN and also that they play a lot of their games while I'm at work... I'd record some games, but my family takes over the TV over the week. I follow them the best I can and I'm excited about how well they're doing.

I can't wait until the playoffs. We have a serious shot to go all the way with how we've played after the trades.

Game today is back on locally on Fox AZ at 4:30. According to the other board no line up changes tonight.

Dangerous player to watch is David Booth and if VoKoun is in goal can be tough to beat.

Lets keep it rolling and get back home against the Blackhawks.

I am stoked that the 'Yotes have won 3 straight on the road since the Olympic break. What a great bunch of guys this FO has collected, and what a great job Tippet has done with them. I postively love the way they play. They play hard ALL the time, and ask no quarter. They also seem to have each other's backs. That is a very good chemistry working in their locker room.

They did it again! The Coyotes were down 3-0 to Florida in the 3rd period and Vrbata scored with one minute to go to send the game into overtime. The game ended as Vrbata got the game winner in the shootout. This game is just like the great comeback against Detroit. Three points separate them and San Jose. What a season this has been.

The way they won last night ... well, that was "team of destiny" type of stuff. I can't recall the Coyotes EVER getting a break like they got on the Vrbata goal that tied the game.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this team and am extremely excited to see how they do in the playoffs. Can anyone believe they now have a shot to overtake the Sharks for best record in the West?

my sharks are playing terrible right now - i think having so many guys in the olympics is hurting them as we come into the condensed schedule

they just don't seem to have it mentally - a lot of breakdowns in awareness, etc

'yotes are playing well and working hard until the end - hard to go wrong when you're getting 60 min. efforts

I thought we looked very average for the first 40 minutes. Outworked badly by Florida and I really thought they were leaving Bryzzy out in the cold, but Tip must have said something in the 2nd intermission that woke them up and we stole 2 points. 4/4 on this road trip is great, but the schedule is only getting tougher, we are very fortunate to have banked these points.

Saturday nights game will be incredible. I know the place will be full of Chicago fans. I would really love to makeiteight!!!

Oh yeah, I'm loving seeing some new faces around the Yotes forum. We are gladly accepting new members to The Pack! I've personally been working my Cardinal fan friends by taking them to a couple of games this year. One is already bugging me to take him to the playoffs! :D

Who makes a schedule that has our team play 9 road games out of 11? That's crazy

the same one that made the earlier part of the schedule home game heavy

teams go on pretty big road trips in the NHL - especially western teams - they tend to play a region and then come back

if there are scheduling conflicts at arenas, etc it makes it harder

throw in the olympics and the fact they are playing a condensed schedule to make up for that time this years schedule is just down right wacky
