I just finished up this season - the least favorite of the set for both my wife & myself ..... but watching them in a quick fashion on DVR may of helped as I'm not as bent up as what I just read
I actually think Jennifer Carpenter did a good job this year .... she normally grates on me, but seemed to show some depth.
Styles can't act and did nothing this season to dispell that ..... however, i think she did bring out a couple dynamics in dexter
Things I didn't like - Angel & LaGuerta .... nothing compelling about either, nothing compelling together ..... they are fine scenery, but let's keep it at that ...... I love masuka, but really don't want to know anything more about him - he serves his part .... not need to make angel & laguerta anything more than office pieces
Some really sloppy writing / suspension of disbelief ..... I'm not a photography expert, but it usually seems that dexter goes offshore a bit to do his drops - but somehow Liddy can stand on the docks, with some super zoom lense and get clear photos at 3am but just kind of holding the camera & clicking ... no tripod or anything ... just picking up crystal clear images of dark objects over dark water in the dark of night
way too many little arcs going on ..... isn't one of the beheading guys still out there? - what was the point of introducing the younger officer? - what did that whole story line reveal? - did we really need to see Angel get duped into thinking LaGuerta was cheating (although it did open up liddy) - given that Quinn was the IA lady after him when he was introduced, wouldn't it be worth exploring how he knew Liddy (who was dirty) - the rushed aspect of quinn being a suspect - the scratched 13th disc that seemed to have different writing on it than the others - the footprints they found - the wrecked stolen car at the camp (note that lumen didn't have gloves on, plus whose blood was on the knife at the other girls home - why wouldn't homicide be called there? - and i'm sure there are another dozen things that bugged me at the time that I just can't remember because they just weren't important
there were a couple things I did like .... they were able to keep some of the suspense going, although not to the extent of other seasons ..... I liked that Dexter showed legitimate concern & emotion ... I liked that he learned that people can lose their desires/dark passenger .... I like that Deb had a little complication of ideals thrown her way - I think this tweak to her character could setup a question on how she acts if/when she finds out about Dexter .... they setup a potential intrigue between dexter/quinn, although I think they meant to wrap it up .... I liked Liddy, very well played IMO
I think next season has to be the last and they have a lot of potential to do it right ... although I don't have a ton of confidence they will pull it off
