Gold gloves are a popularity contest. The guys who make more flashy plays get them, then once you've won one, you have a very good change at winning another.

I wouldn't say they are (just) a popularity contest but I do agree, it's much easier to win your second Gold Glove than it is your first.

Unless Chavez is using a cane at 3B , having his bat protecting Goldy (back to back HR's vs. the Marlins in the 1st inning), is certainly worth his 36 year old fielding. And I haven't seen him embarrass himself at 3B yet. We'll be fine!

As our announcers just said, the only problem is finding someone to hit a legitimate cleanup to protect Goldy when Chavez needs a day off.

Just saw the replay of Upton's salami against the Dudders last night. Damn, when he crushes it, it's something to see. Didn't see the factors leading up it, but it appears Mattingly got caught with his pants down in the managerial dept. as he brought in a lefty to face the .145 hitting Heyward with 1st base open, and he promptly drew a walk with no one ready in the pen to come in.
