He played the #3 Role last year in the slot and he will continue to play that roll this year. Not sure why people are worried he will be a #2?

Dude was very, very solid as the #3 last year. Glad he is back in the fold as the #3 at best.

Maybe we should go after Braylon Edwards or Lee Evans like everyone killed the team for not getting last year and who are available this year still.;)

Uggg, I was one of those retards that wanted one of them. Although, I feel its better to try and fail than do nothing.....

I don't see anything wrong with this move.

It would be stupid to start investing even more money on WRs when your QBs are Kevin Kolb and John Skelton and you are already paying Fitz 120mill.

Anyway, this raises a pretty interesting question. Is it better to have a team of above average WRs or one dominant WR eating up a huge amount of cap space?

Free Agent WR's may be one of the hardest free agent acquisition to hit on. Not sure why they are so hard to guesstimate how they will do in another system? Its odd to me.

It figures Early would be Late to develop. It took him 4 years just to get to average. Tied for 51st in total catches, 57th in receiving yards and tied for 45th in TDs last season.

It's hard to develop when injured. Early has always shown flashes when healthy. But he has been Mr.glass until this past year.

Assuming it wasnt big bucks, I like bringing Early back. Yes, his trip was embarrassing, but he is a good 3rd option. I think he'd be above average if we had anyone who could consistently throw the ball.

Amen. Early showed (when healthy) with Kurt that if you can actually throw it to him he can be a good option.

maybe. But maybe his injuries have made him timid and he doesn't fully focus on making the catch for fear of getting hurt. I hope I'm wrong though, just playing devil's advocate

I like it. We look at the bloopers but should also note that he was leading I understand in reception on third downs for firsts and he also had some other plays which he scored on that were great. No, he is not close to a guy like Fitzgerald but I'm glad he is back and like the signing.

Love this signing. This is locking up a young productive player on a reasonable contract. Still need to get/draft a real # 2.

Out of 1,224 pass attempts 2008-2009 Doucet caught 31.

But I have to admit he was working behind Fitz, Boldin and Breaston* (dang, no wonder we're spoiled when it comes to WRs) so he may yet develop into a more prominent pass catcher.

Of course the longer I keep bashing him the better his chances of that happening. :stick:

:D

* 2008-2009 those three combined for 6,303 yards and 44 TDs!

Doucet is viewed as a #3 slot WR. So, Bodes, don't worry.

In fact, I think it now will be a surprise if the #13 or the #81 pick isn't for a WR. You just know this is going to happen.

We have our #2

Hus name is Andre Roberts. Many of you don't like it but gonna have to deal with it. Look no further than bringing the guy in to the facility to meet with Peyton Manning. This organization believes he can be that guy clearly. They may be right. It used to be that WRs generally took 2 to 3 years to really come into their own. Considering where he came from(Citadel) it would not shock if he improved immensely going into 3rd year.

Get used to it.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So... same WR core... Same LT... and the same QBs... and we're expecting the offense to get better... how exactly?

THIS. Now, granted, we would have been hard-pressed to improve where we needed to in FA. Outside of Manning, there was no available QB that we should have gone after. The Offensive Tackle market started out thin. We did get ourselves a starting RG (maybe starts at RT). Okay, so we really can't worry about that, as we didn't have much of a chance to do anything there.

WR is a position that we had ample opportunity to address, however. There was a deep, deep crop of FA WRs. We have Fitz and Roberts, a #1 and a #3. People (like Shane) may argue that Roberts is a #2, and the team certainly seems to be slotting him there. The problem is that, if your star #1 is not a stretch-the-field speed deep threat, your #2 really needs to be. And Roberts, while certainly improving his game, is NOT a bona fide deep threat burner. This is where we've completely flubbed this offseason: not using the deep FA WR pool to our advantage.

All that said, we pretty much had to bring Doucet back. Because of our utter failure at upgrading our WR corps when the players to do so were available, we backed ourselves into the corner. So now, we have a #1 WR and pretty much two #3 possession receivers. And hot garbage to fill the rest of the WR slots. Great.

I like it.

If he hadn't flubbed that last play--and it was a BIG one, granted--people wouldn't have this kind if visceral reaction.

You know, I think Early gets a lot of grief or that play when Skelton deserves some, too. Early was wide open, Skelton should have just thrown it to him. Not over his head so he has to run it down.

I think that is what Early was expecting, which is why he turned around, then had to quickly turn back around, when he fell.

Really, it was just miscommunication. Early got open, and expected Skelton to throw it to him, so he stopped near the goal line (receivers do this all the time). Skelton expected him to keep going.

This was and is a YAC type of passing offence, dependent on QB's hitting receivers in stride. If Kolb / Skelton can up their completion rate to about 60% it will be productive. When "one year wonders" like Laurent Robinson are being paid exhorbitant amounts, I can't fault the FO for passing in a tight CAP year.

IDK. Chaz Schilens only had 23 catches, 271 yds, 11.8 ave and 2 tds. I'm not sure why some here thought he was going to be some big upgrade over Early.

Agreed.

I liked Chaz Schilens because I think he would have complimented the WR core we already had in place at the time. He would have added size, and speed. Two things lacking in this WR core.

I wish we still had Breaston. :|

Yeah me too. Breaston would have rounded out this core pretty well. He was a WR that could get it done in the clutch.

My biggest problem with signing Doucet is we already have a WR like Doucet in Andre Roberts.

Again, the money matters on how smart of a move this is. I am not so bitter against Doucet to not say he doesn't have some potential to be better.

I would have.

But then again I have some illogical bitterness toward the guy. Just drops too many clutch passes for me. Whether that is fair to say or not, it is what I think of when I see him.

I guess ?

Guy is a professional athelete, he should be able to keep his feet.

Not to mention if Skelton threw it to him, it would not have been a pass in the end zone.

Furthermore, that couldn't have been a better pass to catch, I couldn't have been more easy of a catch if Skelton walked over to Doucet and placed it in his hands. I have no idea why Doucet was twisting and turning tho.

I agree with this. Watching the replay SKelton didn't throw what anyone could call a good ball. It was actually behind Early which is why he did a 360 turn.
