I don't see where people can say Shipp gets no respect. He started 11 games last year and played in all 16.

Lets not forget, it's not like he lit it up last year. He only averaged 3.6 yards a carry and never found the End Zone. Those are not exactly great stats. In fact they are some of the worst numbers for a RB in the league.

and it's about to get worse!

This gives me more confidence in Green than ever. Emmitt gained 2.8 YPC last season. Shipp gained 3.6. All this browbeating over 2.4 feet per tote.
all you need is 4 yards per down. not 3. that 2.4 feet could be the difference in an entire season. Emmitt is old and busted. He can't cut like he once could. He doesn't see as well as he did. he certainly doesn't have a moose blocking for him at fullback either. he never could clear his own lanes, whereas Shipp has the ability to do it time to time.

I like how all the people that were asserting that Green knew more about football than any of us, that he'd been seeing the players on film and evaluating them, etc., now say that Green has no idea what he's doing, is insane, that this can't possibly stick, and that Shipp's far and away a better player.

This gives me more confidence in Green than ever. Emmitt gained 2.8 YPC last season. Shipp gained 3.6. All this browbeating over 2.4 feet per tote.

My problem is by all accounts Emmit has barely touched the ball in minicamp. NOw I know for years in Dallas he did nothing until the regular season started but he's older now and he has done NOTHING since Green took over to win the job on the field because he's barely playing in camp.

So in essence DG is just saying you fit my system better, but he knew that the day he took the job so why talk up Shipp if you were going to bench him without any battle for the job?

Remember last week we were reading stories about Scobey pushing Emmitt for #2, you really think suddenly Emmit has shown he's the best RB on the team?

I'll take a suck coach and a Superbowl win over a coach with the "opportunity to win year after year" every year from now til the day I die.
Oh yeah I would too. I wish DG was a terrible coach. I wish DG won the SB in his first year with the Vikings and then lost every game after that. I wish the Vikings never win a game again ever as long as they win 1 SB. The problem is life doesn't work like that. Life doesn't operate in hindsight. That is why Dan Marino stayed in MIA year after year cause the odds of them winning the ring were better with him there then without him. That is why the people who said trade Elway were idiots because with him there despite his losses the odds were better they would win. The odds of you winning a SB are better with DG then Mike Tice. But there are no guarantees. Tice might win a SB and DG never did but that doesn't make Tice a better coach then DG. But it would make Tice my favourite Vikes coach ever.

Life is about odds the odds of winning a SB are better with Dungy then Erickson. With Gruden then Riley. You cannot predict the future so you go by odds. With Green then Tice.

Shipp is really good at hitting gaps fast! That's what he's best at...it seemed like it to Smith forever to hit the gaps when he was playing last year.

That being said, where are all the positive reviews that we've heard about how Marcel has been performing in training camp? Everyone's favorite underdog, Skkorp's most underrated Cardinal ever, surely someone might have seen something about him to report that's positive.

Maybe Marcel had a horrible OTA period, and this is his punishment. Green's not going to promote Scobey two places.

Why is it that our board gets polluted with Vikings rants?
That post is using the example of the Vikings to explain a point about football in general.

I can use Dave Campo and Bill Parcells if you want.

I was just using it as an example to explain how the NFL and world works.

It applies to all teams.

Nobody cares. Win it all.

ouch. Losers care about winning every year - winners want the ring - or at least an NFC title win - something Green hasn't gotten - make the analogy yourself VF.

Like I argued, the NFL is a league where a mediocre player can thrive better in a system than a star. Emmitt could be much better suited for the system than Shipp, and reminds me much more of Robert Smith than Shipp. Emmitt is much shiftier, a better blocker in the backfield, and a far superior reciever out of the backfield. This is a system in which Smith can thrive, and Shipp can pound it when they need it. (No immature sexual connotations needed for the last sentence) :D

like I said when we signed DG back in January - him and Graves get an abolsute free pass from me as far as moves go this year because of what he's done in the past. I won't bitch and moan about this but . . . Emmitt Smith? Well, he knows better than I do - I hope. Hot Damn this offseason's been interesting!

And then when you find Shipp, scroll DOWN a ways and find Emmitt!

At least of last year, or the year before.
I'm not saying Emmitt is better than Shipp.

I'm just curious why Shipp is championed by a lot of people on this board when he hasn't really done anything to deserve it.

I mean really, it's not like Boldin just got benched. Our below average RB just got benched for an over the hill RB. Big deal!

I got to agree with you and kerouac9 on this topic. Both of you have already said everything I would say myself and covered it pretty well.

I'm going to give the benefit of a doubt to DG but I have the feeling Shipp will win the RB job after training camp.

I realize this is a great subject and event for discussion, but in a football sense what difference does this make in June? None.

Who knows, we may end up with Scoby or Croom starting in September.

our below avg. RB has far greater potential than the over the hill guy. more curiosity? didn't DG just release a bunch of old guys to give the new guys a real chance to prove themselves? what kind of move is this in the light of giving young guys their shot?

I'm not saying Shipp is the 2nd coming of JC, but he's far superior, at least physically, to emmitt.

How about Lucas being championed??? I think some people like some players and that is it. They believe in them no matter what.

I don't know how many of you watched the Vikes during their good run, but Emmitt reminds me much more of Robert Smith than Marcel Shipp. Whether this sticks or not, it seems that most football players are effective in certain systems, and DG's system doesn't seem to be tailored to Shipp. All I remember is DG setting up the run with the pass, and then having Robert Smith get dump offs, delayed hand offs, but always being a quick shifty guy. While Emmitt may not be Robert Smith at this point in his career, he may be a better fit than Shipp for the offense.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Shipp is not a guy that you want as a catch it out of the backfield kind of guy. He's a grind it and spin like a top guy.

I think DG will go very much in the direction of screen passes to the RBs and delays, because the WR core will get a lot of respect. Emmitt isn't done, by any stretch.

I will put full faith in what DG does...he is the coach and he has proven himself on offense many, many times.

Exactly. Way too much hand wringing over a minicamp depth chart.

No not at least an NFC title that is LOSER BS. The only thing that matters is the RING. Your odds of winning a ring are better with DG then Tice. With Gruden (before TB) then Mike Riley. With DG then Fassels.
With DG then Ditka. With Dungy then Ditka.

Your odds of winning a ring are better with a coach who gets your team to the playoffs year after year then with a bad coach who doesn't or won a SB once.

With DG rather then Switzer. Etc etc etc.
