All this is assuming the player is happy with being treated this way contractually. If a player feels disrespected it can hurt the franchise top to bottom

I would rather franchise DJ for two years than give him a 5 year deal at 27.
Right now he is due
799k and will turn 26 after the 2017 season
899k and will turn 27 after the 2018 season
12 mil franchise tag for the 2019 season, after that he turns 28
14 mil franchise tag for the 2020 seasn and let him go after which is when he turns 29.
That breaks down to a 4 year deal averaging 6.9 mil per season without any long term commitment or risk of dead money. There is no way he takes that level of deal in an extension.
