Huh? She already used them in combat? Sure there is. Plus the talked about their training and effectiveness in past episodes. I think the bigger issue is a soldier is trained for the battlefield which is different from acting like a police force in a city.

Against what? Meereen was infiltrated.

If the unsullied were all that battle tested why did the slavemaster in slavers bay just sit in that dirt hole with his army?

The swiss guard of the pope is also said to be elite soldiers. Does not mean they would win a guerilla war if you took them to war.
Also clearly the unsullied displayed issues with how they handle their new found freedom.

I think the show made it pretty clear and obvious that the main attribute of the unsullied is their broken will and being able to use them as robots that will do whatever they are told. That they don't care if they die when you put them on the front. I don't know when unsullied were ever described as masters of single man to man combat.

GRRM said he wants his 6th book released before the next HBO season. I hope that indeed happens.

I haven't read this entire thread, but I'm assuming two more seasons for HBO. next season will be white walkers take over westeros, followed by a final season where Daenerys destroys the white walkers and takes the iron throne.

Though with as much material as they've cut out, I suppose one more season is all they really need.

I can pretty much promise you that isn't what is going to happen.

In the series they are portrayed as a formidable force on the battlefield. From the books:

“Soldiers, not warriors, if it please Your Grace. They were made for the battlefield, to stand shoulder to shoulder behind their shields with their spears thrust out before them. Their training teaches them to obey, fearlessly, perfectly, without thought or hesitation … not to unravel secrets or ask questions.”

That basically says exactly what I said in the previous post. They are much more effective in an open battlefield fighting a war. Not so much being a glorified police force within the confines of a city. Also in the excerpts it was explained that the Harpies also knew this which is why they attacked the unsullied when they were fewer in numbers or in confined spaces like in tight streets and alley ways.

Magic Johnson was a PG dude... a PG.

Thank you! I've heard people complain about the Unsullied. Of all the things to complain about this season, of which there are plenty, the Unsullied are the last of them. Outnumbered, taken by complete surprise, and in many instances attacked from blind spots, it was no surprise to see them cut down. Ask the mighty Roman Legions, the best army in the world at the time, how being the most bad assed soldiers in the world helped them in the Teutoburg Forest.

LOL. Evidently the criteria is who he guarded on defense. I guess Steve Nash was really a SG. Marion a PF and Amare a Center.

Anyway back on topic. So, I am really hoping the finale is good. It would be great to have a rock solid finale as I wait for Vikings to start again.

LOL. Those are pretty good. However, did anybody really think this was as shocking as the Red Wedding? I kept hearing the media hype this episode. Maybe that is why I was not so shocked. My mouth literally dropped after Red Wedding. This one? Meh!

Not even close, mostly because I don't care about Stannis' character and slow as **** storyline.

Not only that but Stannis I almost expect to do something dishonorable or immoral. So when he did it....I wasn't really shocked.

I hadn't read the books and when I watched that episode (Red Wedding), I didn't see it coming. I never expected them to off so many main characters in one swoop. Certainly not the way they did. I thought about that episode for weeks. LOL.

The most interesting thing about that sequence IMO was the mother's actions.

Episode 9 is where they normally do their big shocker or event for the season like Ned in Season 1, Battle of Blackwater for 2, Red Wedding in 3, and Battle for Castle Black in 4. This year that big moment is actually going to be in the finale, apparently. I think this last weeks episode had some great moments but nothing too shocking. Dany being reunited with Drogon was something I saw coming as soon as the mayhem started in the fighting pit. Stannis & Shireen was awful to watch but effective in turning Stannis into more of a monster rather than just by the book sort of character. Also it showed his religious devotion as he was always skeptical before, even after Melissandra birthed a smoke monster to dispatch Renly. He's not become more a religious fundamentalist, I think, based on his actions this last week.

I know I saw this info floating around right after episode 8 with the White Walker battle. I've read and heard more about something shocking happening this coming episode but I'm trying my best to temper expectations.

Oh...the shocking episode is supposed to be this Sunday's episode? I thought it was supposed to be the last one. OK, maybe the scene will be as shocking as the Red Wedding. I just find that hard to believe. We shall see.

By the way....I purchased a new projector for my home theater room and watching GOT on it is mind blowing. What a great show to watch on the big screen.

the only way I can see it being that shocking is if Dany dies.

I read the books so the red wedding didn't hold shock value for me...but it was great watching the ol'lady's face during that scene, lol.

Stannis burning his daughter,.. shock?.. anger?...I dunno,...but I am pretty sure Davos will slip a blade in his ribs when he gets the chance. That scene was not in the books as the fire priestess stayed behind in castle black...which has me wondering now.....perhaps the "Shocking " scene will be the events at castle black?? It is about that time, and will change speculation without the fire priestess being there...

Pretty sure the Danearys storyline is going to follow the book...which will make it a bit disappointing for a season finale.........

maybe Sansa manages to get Ramsey on a rack,....and she and Reek take turns flaying him.......

It's GOT - should anything be considered shocking anymore?

To all of you amazing people with the ability to read books that have foreknowledge of events in the Game of Thrones television show:

Please carry your conversations about what did or didn't happen in the books to the Books section of the forum. I don't want any spoilers or even "non-spoiler" spoilers at all here. I would like to enjoy the television show conversations in the TV Shows section of this forum. I know that if I haven't seen the current week's episode to avoid this forum like the plague until I'm caught up. I expect that. I also know that if I want to talk about what happens in the books to go to the specific section of the forum about Books and that spoilers there are quite possible. What I don't expect is to see "RW" wink wink and "this diverges from the book in this way" type of comments in the TV Shows forum. I understand folks are excited to talk about this, but it's really annoying to those who are watching the television show on its own merits without reading the books ahead of time.

I'm sure a separate thread for "Those who read the GOT books and want to talk about the TV show" would be very popular and gives those folks an outlet for conversation.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

PS I'm no mod so do what you will, but I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from here. Peace.
