It is long past time for the Sun Devils to part ways with Herb Sendek.

All he did was:

3 straight 20 win seasons at NAU (a team that was one of the worst in the nation before he got there)

Took over a losing program at Pitt, in four years back-to-back Sweet 16's, 28 and 29 wins, won the Big East

At UCLA - Three straight final fours.

When Sendek comes close to that, let me know. He has made ONE Sweet 16 in his career.

Hell, Sean Miller has never even made the Final Four, let alone 3 times.

Ben wore out his welcome and burned lots of bridges in So Cal recruiting.

Good coach, but very poor people skills.

Which is strange, because his people skills at NAU were top notch. Maybe as he got successful he began to think too much of himself?

When Howland first started at NAU, attendance was not very good.

His second season at NAU, he did a midnight madness, and afterwards started talking to the students in attendance - he singled me out and said "Thanks for your support - I remember seeing you at many games last season", which I thought was really cool

I think UNLV would be a better fit but yeah there's a reason he's still unemployed. Randy Bennett might want to leave St. Mary's since he can't seem to get over the Gonzaga hump.

I think what makes him a good coach works against him with people. He just has no tolerance for anybody who sees anything differently than he does. That includes players and coaches. He thinks you don't work hard enough or are soft, he simply won't adjust.

I hope he learned from his time off.

Don't want him. He has a similar personality to Sendek but with more baggage. Wasn't there a story about the time he was fired that he had alienated all the AAU coaches in the area?

Ben's biggest issue is not wanting to recruit the one and done players...He takes exception to that...kinda like Sendek. However, their is no denying his ability to coach and win.

The radio jocks out here, though, do remind everyone that Ben's offense is basically a modern version of the 4 corners...kinda boring to watch. Another reason they say he hasn't been hired anywhere. However, their is some steam picking up that if USC becomes available, he's on the short list of candidates to replace.

He may not like it but he certainly recruited them at UCLA. Love, Shabazz, he recruited Kyle Anderson who fully intended on being a 1 and done.

His biggest issue was not recruiting, it was RETAINING players. He was able to sign some really good players, they just usually left 1 year early, even an absolute Warrior like Afflalo tried to leave as a soph and did leave as a junior. He's a terrific coach but people don't like playing for him and in a place like UCLA that was a huge problem because they got so much exposure to the NBA and agents it was very easy to convince kids to leave early.

The classic was Malcolm Lee who was told by everyone but his AAU coach to stay at UCLA, and still turned pro. He did it having just had knee surgery(so he couldn't work out) and knowing there was likely going to be a lockout, and he was not going to be a first round pick. Lee was the prototypical Howland player, great defender, played hard, but he couldn't wait to leave.

It sounds like he's the front runner for the UNLV job too and that would be interesting, there were lots of rumors that Stephen Zimmerman was one of the kids who told UCLA he wasn't coming to UCLA if they retained Howland. Now many think UNLV is getting Zimm, would be interesting if they hired Howland to see if Zimm still goes there.

FYI UNLV has apparently announced they are not firing Rice which means they're out of the Howland running.

Although at this point it seems more like a jog than a run after Ben since he's been out 2 full years now.

A cynic would suggest UNLV did the same thing UCLA did and decided they wanted Zimmerman so they kept the coach, same reason UCLA kept Howland one more year to get Bazz.

Rice has a relationship with Stephen Zimmerman, and some think that will help lure him to UNLV, which I don't think will happen. Perhaps after Zimm commits elsewhere, UNLV will fire Rice, or at least wait until the following season.

BTW---I think Zimm goes UCLA. You're welcome, Russ.

We're being told it's UNLV or Kansas. I'm not a huge Zimmerman fan my concern is he and his family think he's a one and done, he's not, and sometimes that's not good for the school the kid picks, they end up blaming the school and not looking in the mirror and realizing they're not as good as they thought. Sometimes it can be great, you get a good player for multiple years, but with his family I fear it will be a problem.

He's good, he's a very good passer, but he's not a dominant player. I'd take Rabb any day over him but he's not seriously considering UCLA IMO.

he really needs to go now, but sadly I don't see it happening. If ASU could have won the NIT, maybe Sendek would have left for another job, sensing things at ASU weren't all well, much like he did at NCSU. In the Harden-Pendergraph days I wanted to believe he had turned it around, but like Snyder being unable to capitalize on the Row Bowl run, Sendek hasn't continued that momentum.

We're a decade in with this guy, way under .500 in conference play, it's time for a change. Sadly, the finances make it look like we're stuck with him for at least one more year.

I guess the hope is that Anderson tells him he's out no matter what, Sendek somehow gets ASU to a 1st round exit in the NCAA Tourney, and uses that to get himself a new job somewhere else.

http://arizonastate.scout.com/story/1530633-sendek-job-uncertain-ahead-of-tuesday-meeting?s=43

The future of Arizona State's basketball program is unclear as its head coach and athletics director are set discuss the job Tuesday morning in Tempe.

Herb Sendek and Arizona State Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson are scheduled to meet Tuesday morning at 9:45 to discuss the future of the men's basketball program at the school, according to multiple sources familiar with the plan.

Though Sendek received a one-year extension from Anderson, which was ratified by the Arizona Board of Regents in December and pushed his contract term through June of 2017, after nine seasons in Tempe his situation is very much uncertain entering Tuesday's meeting...........

The first story I saw on this said one of the leading candidates is Pastner. God awful coach.

They mention Russell Turner of Irvine too, good coach, ASU is not the only Pac 12 team that thinks he's a Pac 12 level coach.

There's literally zero chance Archie goes to ASU. I could see Pastner jumping as he's likely getting fired in a year but didn't ASU do same thing with Herb? Not comparing the two as their strengths and weaknesses are exact opposites (Pastner is an outstanding recruiter but poor in development and coaching). Turner would be the hire that ASU has never made. Historically have always gone after the retreads.

Go with the former NBA player route

Fred Hoiberg Iowa State is doing really well
Bobby Hurley Buffalo is going to get better
Dan Majerle GCU has increased their win total past 2 seasons
Kevin Ollie led UCONN to a national championship

it'd be super fun, but seems hihgly unlikely.

I'd love to look at the UC Irvine coach, but he's only had 1 NCAA Tourney birth so far in his career. Was it a fluke or is he the real deal? That's sort of the risk you take with an up and coming coach.

Hoiberg won't leave Iowa State - especially for a lateral move
Hurley will wait to see what happens at Duke
Majerle - wins totals are DOWN. Yes, higher level, but you do realize that GCU was in the bottom 10% of DI this year? Plus, Majerle couldn't even beat NAU's assistant coach.

Why would Ollie leave UConn for ASU?

Murphy at NAU is the second best coach in the state, but he needs a couple more years up there to calm him down a bit.

Majerle won't leave GCU right now. The Colangelo connection is too strong.

ISU to ASU would be a step down.

UCONN to ASU would be a far collapse.

Honestly, ASU's best option would've been to wait a year. The pickings are slim at the moment.

Devil fans have said his name 100,000 times.

To put this to an end---he won't go to any PAC-12 school let alone ASU. Archie does not want to compete against his brother, and he is positioning himself for one of the big boy jobs. Plus, to be quite honest, ASU is not a step up from Dayton.

Everything is accurate except for last statement. ASU IS a step up from Dayton, but Archie isn't going to coach against his brother, so end of story.

I interpreted his post as going after a guy like these guys who was a good college player and had at least a stint in the NBA - not these 4 guys speciically (but I could be wrong).
