ASU Basketball: AD Ray Anderson says new coach will help program 'compete consistently for championships'

http://www.houseofsparky.com/2015/3...tate-mens-basketball-ray-anderson-herb-sendek

"We're going to give this basketball program a chance to compete consistently for championships," Anderson said. "We want to have our fanbase energized and passionate and fired up about men's basketball, and we didn't see that.

"So now is the time with the momentum we have with this University and this athletic department to make this happen."

Anderson said the school does not have a shortlist of candidates, and said he and his staff will be forming a list "in short order." He said it will be national search and compared it to the process the program underwent before hiring Tracy Smith as the baseball coach.

Anderson dispelled the rumor that ASU has offered the position to Duke assistant Jeff Capel.

"I'm looking for someone who is going to come in here and provide electricity and fire and sparks and really ignite the thought that Arizona State University men's basketball can be really dynamic," Anderson said. "I'm looking for someone who is dynamic recruiter. I'm looking for someone who is a dynamic developer of basketball talent."

Anderson said that he did not take single games into account. He said the loss to USC in the Pac-12 tournament was not a determining factor, just as the victory over Arizona in February did not earn him a longer tenure.

"When you take everything in total, I just didn't see the performance and the progress that would give me confidence that we were going to get better soon enough," Anderson said.

He also mentioned that the basketball's facilities need upgrading. He called them "first-grade" facilities and that a new coach will be the beneficiary of those changes in the future.

Herb is a good man. A very good man. His career at ASU ranks highly with five 20 win seasons and a 9 & 8 record against UofA in his last 17!games against the Cats.
Herb is a good coach. A very good coach. But, he's not a good recruiter... That said, it will be interesting to see what someone else is able to do here. Realistically, what should the expectations for this program be? How much better in terms of results above and beyond what Sendek produced is this program capable of achieving?? Should be interesting to see it unfold. I think the chances are just as good that the Devils end up with something less than what Sendek produced as they are that the program improves...

LMAO... my thoughts exactly!!

Gotta say... he looked extremely dejected. It was sad actually. I almost wanted to go up to him and give him a hug. Hope he lands on his feet quickly. I still believe that the chances for ASU to end up with something worse than Herb are greater than seeing improvement. I really hope Anderson nails this hire! :(

Everyone's in agreement that Herb was a class act but something had to be done otherwise ASU dwells in mediocrity. ASU needs somone who can recruit on a consistent basis not land a 4-star every few years. With Mack & Miller signing extensions it looks like Capel or Pastner are the the best available. Heard on the news yesterday that Coach K called Colangelo to bat for Capel with Anderson, so Capel sounds interested.

Lavin's names has surfaced as well... As for the program dwelling in mediocrity... A coach isn't gonna solve that problem. Wells Fargo Arena needs a massive overhaul, if not a complete demolition. Fans and boosters need to step up and actually support the program. I don't care who Anderson brings in, if the other pieces aren't addressed, it won't matter and again, the risk is that the program actually becomes less than mediocre.

EDIT: Just read that St. John's let Lavin go... Hmmmm.....

One of the knocks on Sendek was he couldn't recruit. You can blame you that on the lack of facilities but overall ASU'S campus is pretty nice. Recruits would get immediate playing time whereas schools like UK you have a deep rotation to break into. I think a younger, energetic guy like Pastner could lure in talent but you are correct in boosters need to step up and support the basketball program.
