No, that is not correct. In a "rebuilding" mode, the project big man is a no-brainer. I didn't think Jeffries was that great to begin with, certainly not as good as Aldridge made him out to be.

But we are NOT "rebuilding". Draft decisions are dependent on the current makeup of the team. The team when we drafted Amare was vastly different than the team now.

omg chap, i'm asking you to step outside reality for a second, use your imagination, and force you to give an answer. if we were a championship contending team and had the ninth selection in the draft, would you select the raw high school kid (amare) or the experienced college vet (jeffries)?!? by your logic i'd have to assume that you'd go with jeffries (or some other college big man that was available in that draft). yes or no?

No, by his logic he'd have to go with someone who looked like he was ready to contribute in a meaningful way. Jeffries had "soft tweener" written all over him. Most likely a contending team at #9 in that draft would have taken Butler.

so you'd go with another small forward and not take a big man? What good would that do you?

EDIT: actually, that would probably work - then you could deal Marion of for some bigs and depth!

Can any case be made for the Suns trading this year's pick?

why? I don't think it would help us cap-wise? We can still get someone who can ultimately perform at the #21 spot.

Well before the draft, I thought Amare was the better player already then Jefferies. I was hyping Amare long before we drafted him.

When I say contribute now, I mean someone who can play decent minutes off the bench (which Amare did play big minutes his rookie year). If the Suns think that a high school kid can play decent minutes next year, then I don't care.

I guess I am saying that I trust the Suns scouting department right now, enough that race isn't a determination for me.

I don't necessarily think they should trade the pick, I just didn't see it mentioned on the thread as an option...so I floated the idea.

I'm thinking we could get a decent back up PG with #21 spot. It doesn't have to be a Steve Nash, but a penetrate and dish PG like an Earl Boykins even would help the Suns next year. Or anyone with height and mobility like a poor man's Rasheed Wallace (minus the coach choking gene). ;)

the more i think of ukic, the more i like that possibility at the 21. or if jack falls that far. i think pg is the way to go. seems very rare that bigs that drop end up being pleasant surprises whereas the guards that drop often end up good (parker, manu, finley, horny, van exel - did i already do this???). i say we find that backup pg of the future with the 21st pick and find us a pretty decent bigman who wants to play for a contender with the MLE and resign hunter to a sane contract. we'd be set then in my opinion.

(damnit, still like wayne simeon though . . . )

Wow, I just picked another team that I thought would be inclined to take white players - I can't believe what I found.

If I didn't miss something, the Utah Jazz have selected five black players in the first round since 1990 out of 14 first round picks.

That is an incredible number considering that about 78% of the players in the league are black.

Kirk Snyder in 2004
Deshawn Stevenson in 2000
Quincy Lewis in 1999
Jacque Vaughn in 1997
Luther Wright in 1993

I can't believe no one else was surprised by this.

Interesting....I think the team has to at least explore the possibility.

Chad Ford hasn't posted the results from the athletic testing in Chicago, but DraftExpress is saying that David Lee graded as the most athletic power forward in this draft class.
