If Kyler Murray were to have a career like Tony Romo or Philip Rivers, how would you feel?

Romo? Not so good. Rivers? Ecstatic.

Rivers' numbers would shatter anything any QB has ever done here. He also has just two less postseason appearances than we do in the Super Bowl era.

I know people on this site love Philip Rivers for some weird reason, but with all the hype that Kyler has received, you cannot tell me Kyler not having at least ONE of the following:

All Pro
MVP
SB appearance
Memorable playoff moment

All while having really good rosters in decent portions in his career.

You can’t tell me that wouldn’t be disappointing, or at least underachieving.

Romo? Probably. Though I always thought he was massively over-hated.

I would love for Kyler to be as good as Tony Romo. I don't believe he will be.

I'll take Joe Flacco

I wanted the Cards to draft Rivers in the worst way.

Just referencing the bold: It's hard to poo-poo someone who is in the top 6 of all relevant statistical categories for QB all-time. Yardage, TDs, etc.

If Kyler finished top-5 or even top-ten all time, even the biggest haters would have to love him.

There's only 1 MVP each season, and only 2 All-Pros. Rivers had the unfortunate timing to be blocked by some of the best quarterbacks in history: Brady, Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers. It's weird that Matt Ryan has been on 2 All Pro teams and Rivers hasn't been on one.

Both of those guys are very good quarterbacks capable of leading Super Bowl teams. I'd be fine if Murray had a career like either. Both those guys had 2+ years to sit and learn, though.

This is where I disagree.

Sure, he put up a lot of stats, but will he be remembered 10-20 years from now after retirement?

For the people that mock the Kyler apologist for calling him transcendent & all that hoopla, I can’t imagine that group showing him love if he didn’t earn a single of those things.

Be real, especially from you, imagine reading all the hype around Kyler about how he’s going to do this & do all that, yet, when he retires, the most notorious thing he would probably be known for is playing on a torn ACL & literally that’s it.

Nonsense. If we were winning 7 games and he was playing like Andy Dalton, everyone here would be OVER THE MOON about him. The only dead-enders who don't turn around on an individual player in the face of team success is me — who basically didn't admit that Daryl Washington didn't completely suck until after his third season.

After which he immediately began to completely suck. Mostly as a human being, but also as a football player.

It’s nothing weird about Matt Ryan having an All-Pro while Rivers has 0. He has been the better QB throughout his career. Matt Ryan also shares the same conference with Rodgers, Brees, & Wilson.

You also mock the Kyler apologist, so you cannot be serious & tell me that Kyler having the same career as Rivers wouldn’t be a disappointment.

Do we still remember Dan Marino? Warren Moon? Sure, those guys have some All-Pro in them, but he's right up there with them, and to K9's point, they didn't have the bad luck he does to be playing in an era with some other amazing QBs.

The amazing thing is that he's #6 in passing yards and TDs, but only #31 in interceptions thrown.

I don't think Kyler will ever even sniff the jock strap of this kind of production, and it wouldn't make him a bad QB to do that. But being an all-time NFL leader in even one of the relevant stats would be a huge win for this franchise that has never had a decent QB in AZ.

The fact that I think his most likely result is a career similar to Alex Smith's...anything better than that will be gravy. Will he have ultimately been overdrafted? Sure, but I honestly can't put a price on the value of a consistently competitive team at this point.

First, it’s disrespectful as hell to put Marino in the same sentence with Moon & Rivers, & I love Moon. Um, Marino played in the same era as Montana, Elway, Favre, Kelly, Young, & hell, Moon himself.

Matt Stafford & Matt Ryan are pretty much going to surpass Rivers’ in all those categories, but no one is going to give a damn about them two, mainly in Stafford’s case, down the road.

Funny thing is that Rivers has played bad in a majority of playoff games, too. You know how furious you & K9 would be if Kyler put up a 1:2 TD/INT 298 yard statline in a playoff game at home? While being the favorite?

Rivers was a good QB that just had a long career. Was he a bust? Absolutely not. Disappointment? No. Underachiever? Yes.

That’s what would Kyler would be to me if he followed the same career trajectory as Rivers. It’s hard to imagine you wouldn’t feel the same after reading all the praise he got leading to & after the draft.

Fine.

Please answer my question though. Would Kyler, despite you hearing all the mega praise he has received, followed the the same trajectory as Philip Rivers, aka, no big accomplishments, wouldn’t be a letdown/disappointment?

Marino didn’t lead his team to a championship either, is all I was pointing out, and he had a mixture of trash and decent teams in his tenure.

Again, I wouldn’t be furious if Kyler did that. I would have been happy he got us to the playoffs, and I got to watch a season of football where we won some meaningful games. Haven’t seen that in forever. Would I be disappointed in not winning it all? Sure, but not that disappointed if we had a QB that was consistently getting us to the playoffs.

I just want to win consistently season to season for a while. Football is zero fun when it’s hopeless by November. Even in 2016, we won meaningless games getting to 8-8, but we were out well in advance.

If you mean no Super bowls not happy. If you mean as good as them I guess so but he's a much better runner than either so if he puts up comparable passing stats plus the run stats he'd be better

Marino won an MVP, multiple All Pros, & had a championship appearance. If Kyler got any of that, I would be perfectly fine. Not everyone wins a championship. I know that. However, I don’t care how great other QBs are nowadays, if Kyler didn’t nab an All-Pro or two, or elevate his team enough to a SB appearance(though the team must have some type of talent), that would be extremely disappointing.

Lets not forget Rivers was the 4th overall pick, not a 3rd rounder.

I’m not sure what 3rd rounders you think should be top 6 in all time statistics at their position.

Also, Marino played nearly 20 more games than Rivers has, and is still within the realm of getting overtaken at those key metrics.

Rivers was the 4th pick technically, but went to the #1 overall team within an hour of being drafted. I just fail to understand the disrespect here. It’s not all a stats game, but it’s intense to rip on him as much as you do. He’d be the best player in most teams’ histories at his position.

if Kyler made us a perennial playoff team for a decade, but never won or got to the Super Bowl, I'd be content, but not happy. We've never had anything like that kind of stability as far as wins losses are concerned. towards the end, I'd probably get pretty bitter, much like a lot of Falcons fans probably are now, but it would be really nice to win more often than not on Sundays and get to at least get our hopes up most January's.

Because he doesn’t have any hardware as of note, but gets treated like he was elite player throughout his career. Good for him to play for a long time to accumulate stats even though they’ll get surpassed & he’ll most likely be forgot about in the next 10-20 years. He always shrunk in big moments. Always. This is despite having great teams in decent portions of his career. Lets not forget Rivers has only made the playoffs twice in this decade.

At season pace Kyler will put up about 3750 yards, 18 TD's passing, 11 picks 5 TD's rushing. At his more recent pace the yards go down the picks go up(so do the TD's though).

Alex Smith didn't get 18 TD passes until his 4th season and only topped 20 3 times in his career. Where Alex got really good after a terrible start was protecting the ball he was basically more than 2 to 1 TD to INT most of his career AFTER his first 5 years.

So Kyler is way ahead of where Smith was at the same stage but who knows where he'll end up. Kyler has 4 rushing TD's, Smiths' career high was 5 and he had 15 in his entire career so it would appear Kyler is going to be better there.

I get the idea the short passing protect the ball part is similar but at least comparing year 1, it took Smith until year 4 to put up comparable or better numbers. Alex was on a horrible team, but so is Kyler.
