Josh McCown Is The Answer

He seems to be what we thought he was. A guy with physical tools who can look really good, but can't do it consistently.

What really surprises me is that he's still playing, the guy that came up with us was so reckless running around taking hits I would have never guessed he'd last. Sure he had years where he barely played but still very surprised his style of play didn't knock him out of the league a few years ago with injuries.

Some of the names mentioned on this thread include John Navarre and Kevin Kasper being potential players. How far we've come as a franchise (the John Skelton and Ryan Lindley Eras being the noteworthy exclusions).

And yeah I'll give McClown credit. Dude has somehow made a small fortune playing football despite being a meager at best talent.

Wow, this thread takes me back to a very, very dark time and place. This is back when a Cardinals loss would seriously ruin my entire week. Needless to say, I must have been one miserable SOB back then.

I've always said that I think McCown is a decent backup QB. Although back then a statement like that earned me the label of a "hater" to many.

I still say McCown can throw a jump ball with the best of them. Whenever he has had a couple of big, physical WRs to throw it up to he has had a little bit of success. That was always his best asset. Seriously.

That and drawing roughing the passer penalties. So many times I'd see a pass thrown horribly off target and think to myself, great, another 3 and out only to look in the backfield and see McCown's helmet twisted around his face to where he is looking out of the ear hole as he signals 1st down.

With as many niche and gimmicky offenses around these days, if only some offensive guru could have developed a system around those two plays McCown could have been great.

If you were when he threw the TD to beat the Vikings all the other failures kinda fade. It was pretty awesome at the time.

It DEFINITELY was! And looked what happened? Things be better when I'm pessimistic!

Again like I said 2 years ago, you really do have to credit Josh with being able to survive and play this long in the NFL. He's never been great but he's sure had a hell of a lot better career than I would have expected.

I remember watching him as a rookie at Candlestick warming up, Plummer was the starter, and it was so interesting seeing how much more zip Josh had on throws, but how much quicker Jake's release was. Once Josh started to play regularly I didn't need too long to decide he was a better athlete than a QB, but he's become a pretty solid NFL backup QB, who has had to start multiple times probably to his detriment.

If they had a recognized position for the Hall of Fame for backup QB, Josh would be the first one nominated. Gotta love him. I have always thought that each year you could name at least a couple teams who he would be better than who they had starting. When you think of all the high drafted rookie hopefuls that have come and gone from the NFL at the qb position over the last couple decades, Josh has been, not only better, but worth so much more. All the high draft choices, and all the losing seasons, wasted on failed qbs is laughable, when you think they could have just grabbed Josh off the bench of the teams that he sat there for and saved themselves all that futility. Like the Browns, wouldn't they had been much more successful if they had just used Josh all those years?

I have thought that about a few teams.

McCown is kind of like Brian Hoyer. Just good enough to play and start in the league, but when you have to rely on him solely? Usually doesn't turn out well.

I for one would love to see the Jets make the playoffs this year tho.

That's really it for Josh, he's obviously gotten better over the years but his ceiling is too low for an NFL team to have banked on him being a starter when he was young enough for it to have made sense. he's still just barely got more TD passes than INT's for his career, but he's become a solid backup who in a pinch can start for you.

Omg what an epic bump. Lol, I too once believed in Josh McCown. Was ready to had the keys to the franchise over to him. Here we are though, 13 years later, still talking about him, and how he's still in the NFL. What a huge heart he has. Unstoppable.

He certainly has had a longer career than I ever thought. But, he's 39 years old. I wouldn't sign him as anything but an intern on the coaching staff.

funny...when you look at his career stats it aint that bad... over 60% career passer, more TD's than picks...
its just when he has a bad day...man, he has a really bad day.... Nick Foles has had the same problem so far.
