There’s a reason he hasn’t signed a long term deal & franchised 2 years in a row at inflated price$! it takes both sides to make a deal. Something tells me Kirk & his agent wanted to be the highest paid QB in the NFL with a new deal & the Skins wouldn’t budge.

Or that they didn't like that the organization showed zero faith in him, and in their most recent "prove it" year, did nothing to retain his top targets.

There's 31 other teams that didn't make that pick. No one traded up to take him right after Andrew Luck.

Wouldn't you agree that making the trade/pick when no other team wants to do it is what makes it a risky biscuit?

Keim asleep at the wheel

Best QB available for trade gone

Keim was so focused on the new coaching he probably forgot others are wheeling and dealing

To help new caoaching staff Cardinals are likely to trade down to load up on draft picks and draft a 2nd round QB late in first round. And they will sign someone like Keenum or Bradford too in FA

My guess is that KC was in contact with every team that needs a QB. Top of the list would have been the Cards since we don't even have Uncle Rico on the roster . . . or even Kip (but he's best suited to be a cage fighter).

Ridiculous, Skins would probably STILL draft a qb like they traded for RG3 and still drafted a qb in the later rounds.

As I said before dump all the money with Cousins. He’ll make this team an instant contender.

If Cousins goes to the Jets, Browns, or Broncos, Baker Mayfield will be our QB guys. I will be extremely happy with that. I still love Lamar, though. Won’t mind either.

if it makes you feel better I have seen a few mocks that have Lamar going to the Jets....so we didnt have a shot at him anyway, lol... :D

Agreed, actually. I thought we could get Smith for a 3rd rounder, and I was thinking the one that we're looking to get for losing Calais. A player and our mid-round 3rd round pick would have made me question a lot.

This is a crazy move by the Redskins, honestly. Before evaluating this year's QBs? With middling offensive skill players? I wonder if Cousins' camp said something that basically just completely shut down the idea of him coming back.
saw an article today... Cousins was talking about the franchise tag...said he dont see why so many guys have an issue with it...its great money... he says, hell, just sign it guys... if the redskins tag me again Im gonna sign it...

his intention is to continue to play on the tag until the skins let him go...not good for them since it goes up 20% per year applied... just under $30mil this year for him. He just wants out of washington, but is willing to play there for a guaranteed huge sum of cash that includes an increase every year, lol.

bright side for everyone else is...since he has taken about $50mil from the skins over the past couple seasons he can maybe be a bit more of "it aint about the money"...until cleveland offers him 5 years at $150mil with $75mil guaranteed

Feel bad for Alex Smith. Good QB. His best shot at super bowl was with Harbaugh and Andy Reid. Just couldn't do get it done. Now Smith goes to a team owned by Snyder and GM'd by Bruce Allen.

One the Dan Patrick show today, Smith said it would be nice if he controlled his destiny. Sounds likes Smith knew where he was headed. And if you are Washington it says all about what Smith thinks of his new team.

that $70mil guarantee says a lot about what he thinks of them, lol.

good move for the skins though... they need the cousins drama to end. with a few pieces Smith can make that offense competitive.

if they dont do much, but still start winning,..that tells ya a little about cousins too

I'm probably drunk right now...I just got home, but a team really traded assets and 71 million guaranteed to swap Kirk Cousins for Alex Smith? I don't know that I have been more baffled by any transaction in any sport.

To reply to my own thread... If you don't like Cousin's and all... I get it, but to ditch him for an older crappier player (by a wide statistical margin) is insane to me. Its nuts how Andy Ried continues to hoodwink teams into giving him assets for trash QBs.

I bet he could sign Trent Green tomorrow and flip him for a 3rd round pick by August.

The Redskins continue their crazy ways! I like Kirk Cousins, but I also understand that the Redskins thought he'll never be an elite QB to take them to the promised land. Now guess what? They give Alex Smith of all people, 33, coming off a career year, 71 millions guaranteed!

Good to know there's a franchise even worse than the Cards when it comes to QB matters...

Fine. Yeah I'd rather shoot for the moon with some rookie than pray that Alex Smith can limp us to 8-10 wins.

just read a couple articles that said the browns made a play for Smith too but got beat out by the skins....it didnt mention if they were beat out in their offer to the team or in their contract for smith. But smith wanted to go somewhere with at least a chance of winning.

I can't see us paying Cousins so much money, that it seems it will take to sign him, even though I think he's pretty good. I expect us to still go after a vet, that the team considers an upgrade over DS. Then, draft a QB #1, and whoever that is, and how well he performs will determine our "near term" future. Bradford makes sense, and I hope that he and DS can get us through the first half of the season, and then turn it over to our QBOTF.

Redskins got fleeced by Reid. Amazing how Reid manages to pull off trades like this. He gets a 3rd round pick, a talented starting CB in Fuller and clears $17M in cap space.

Meanwhile all of the investments the Redskins made in Kirk Cousins prove fruitless, who now pay the 33 year old Smith close to $24M per.

Need to consider that Smith may not have wanted to come to the Cards and (yikes!) picked Washington over us. Ditto some of the other QBs who will be on the market.

As a Cards Homer, I always look at my team as one that other players want to play for. May not be the case. For example, a QB candidate is going to look at the current state of our O and make a decision if he wants to play here.

Big questions everywhere. The McCoy O has been around for some time---wonder what former players think of his system. Pieces on the OL need replacement, our 'top' TE out with a hamstring, questions at WR and whether Fitz returns, head coach stating he wants to go with a run-oriented O, etc.

Even if SK was in on the Smith pursuit, Smith may have balked at signing here---which is a really tough biscuit to swallow as a fan of the Cards.

Also, the 3rd pick Washington gave up will most likely come back as a comp pick when Cousins leaves. CB Fuller a very good CB and will work well for KC after they send Revis off to Castaway Island.

Not much for Smith all things considered. Cards have got to survive our Division and either win it outright or put together enough wins to qualify as a wildcard. For all the criticism of Smith, he would have given us a decent chance to quality for the playoffs---a strong D, a strong run game, a competent Smith---I would have taken my chances with that team.
