As a guest on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Friday, the five-time NBA champion called his comments "stupid and ignorant" and continued to express remorse.

"In this situation, seeing how many people were affected, it helps you understand the weight that comes from that word," Bryant said. "That's why it's very important for me to communicate how sorry I am to use the word."

Bryant, who was fined $100,000 by NBA commissioner David Stern for the outburst, said he hopes he can influence people to stop using the offensive word.

"It's about getting that message out there man, to kill that word," he said. "Just don't use it, just don't use it. And hopefully others can learn from the situation that occurred and just knock that word out completely."

Bryant said on the show that he wanted to contact Adams to apologize, but was not sure on whether NBA rules allow a player to contact a referee off the court. Bryant said even though he is officially appealing the NBA's fine, he does not plan to actually fight it.

"The commissioner did a great job," Bryant said.

Meantime, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced Friday that it will be working with the Lakers and the NBA to spread awareness about anti-gay slurs and bullying, the LA Times reported.

"In light of this slur, there is a real opportunity to build support for our community and educate fans of Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the NBA about the use of such words," said Jarrett Barrios, president of the advocacy group.

"The Los Angeles Lakers have taken a positive step and we look forward to working with them to create messages from players and coaches that combat bullying. We also suggested and will continue to advocate for zero tolerance policies for anti-gay slurs at home games."

The Yankees adopted a similar policy last year after video surfaced showing some fans yelling an offensive version of the "YMCA" song at opposing fans.

"What happened in Tuesday night's game is not representative of what the Lakers stand for," said Lakers spokesman John Black in GLAAD's statement.

"We want to reaffirm our commitment to all our fans and our appreciation for the support we receive from all segments of society. We also understand the importance of positive messages in helping us convey this. We appreciate the input we've received from GLAAD the past two days and will look forward to working with them on ways to help educate ourselves and our fans, and to help keep language like this out of our game."

Well, pretty much as I laid out.

Put Kmart in that getup. Yep, you just did in your mind, and yep, it's worse.

it's just as ludicrous... but K-mart wouldn't be caught dead in that get up. Kobe preened for an entire photo shoot of that stuff.

I know you love him and all, but Kobe's one of the great uber-douches of all time. doesn't take away from him being a psychopath who can kill pretty much everyone on the court.

right... after 24 hours of him being bashed by a ton of people, Kobe realizes he needs to spin harder and does so.

you really believe he believes any of the above? if so, why did he wait until he was crushed by criticism to say it?

come on now...

Not arguing with that - but the message itself is fairly in line with the approach I was advocating.

100%

Kobe is one of the best 2 guards in the history of the game. But as far as being a classy model citizen, he is far from it. Although he is an intelligent man, he has displayed poor judgement from time to time. The homophobic comment, alleged rape, throwing players and team under the bus, etc.

K-Mart's name has been thrown around like a football on this thread. He is the epitome of a thuggish athlete. But when you try and compare the two, it does not make Kobe any less of a malcontent.

Oh, I don't think otherwise. He's a ********. But a) he's my ******** and b) he's a stone cold assassin.

Kmart wouldn't be caught dead in that get up because he's so "hard." Yet he probably wears it to bed at night, he's so fake tuff. I don't mind Kobe's douchiness because he's the star of my favorite team but even moreso, because he is dedicated to the game and to improving, even when he's so great. I adore that about him, so I forgive when he's a douche, or when he shoots us out of a game, because he can also shoot us into a game, or beat Dallas all by himself.

Kmart is a douche, thinks he's badass, and makes Shaq look like a hard worker. Yet Kmart thinks he's better than anyone on the court, including Kobe. Now, I appreciate swagger like that, but you better back it up...Kmart doesn't - and doesn't even come close. BTW, he's also now colored in the lips on his neck and turned it into some other tatoo, so it looks like dark lip like objects wearing a hat. Must have broken up with his rap girlfriend.

Meh, I watch them for their game and their craft and their example on the court, not off the court. On the court, and related to basketball, dude is a wizard and I'm in awe. Off the court, he's a flawed dude who lives in a strange world none of us could even understand that is hard to believe is reality.

He does things on the court I wouldn't have my kids emulate (yelling all the time, this thread's topic, punching poor Joe Smith or Sasha, etc) but I'm a monster advocate of hard work and dedication, and I talk to my kids about how Kobe squares his shoulders 99.9% of the time before his release, and how his form is what they need to imitate...not how he glowers at a ref or ten.

My favorite Lakers, all three of the top ones, have had bad run ins off the court with their lower halves...Magic, Kobe and Worthy. Idiots off the court, savants on.

So you don't think it's at all possible for him to have "seen the light"? It's not possible that he never really thought about it, and now that this has happened, he means what he says?

I have no idea if that's likely or not, but for all his faults, I have never gotten the impression that Kobe was stupid (well, aside from the Colorado thing, but that was more of a lack in judgment, not an indictment on his intelligence--and yes, I believe there is a difference), and unable to be educated on a subject.

It would be nice if the league donated his fine to GLAAD. Doubt it happens. They're the hypocrites.

All I'm sayin is I love me some ass too, and that's all that matters. Does it matter who it comes from? Does it matter whether your ass dealer is male or female? Does that make you a better ass &%#4!* ?
Lets all be fans of the booty, I aint gay but my woman better (I'm actually pretty gentle :p) worry if I am feeling froggy. Booty is awesome, I feel sorry for Lesbians. Kobe almost lost his freedom over some ass, now he acts like an ass, I hope he takes it up the ass for talking stupid.

Another reach. Again, no one said it was applicable in the heat of the argument, just understandable.

Furthermore, How is someone an cornholio better than calling them a ******?

Because calling someone an cornholio does not denigrate a segment of society, while calling someone a ****** denigrates a segment of society. It is not a matter of hurting the target, it is a matter of equating homosexuals to some hated and despicable segment of society and thus using the term as an insult. Obviously , Kobe believes homosexuals are inferior to himself in a perverted sort of way.

Reach? Not in the least bit. ****** is a derogatory term towards homosexuals and the context behind it is not only trying to be antagonistic, but also implying that homosexuals are beneath you and I as straight guys, even if the term is used towards a heterosexual in the heat of an argument. The only difference is in society, we have allowed this term to become a traditional put down towards anyone and everyone.

As for the term "cornholio," it is not directed towards any demographic, but simply common profanity. Like if someone cut you off while driving, your reaction is to utter something along those lines about that particular driver. Happens all of the time. Completely benign when compared to a derogatory term towards any specific group of people, unarguably.

Nailed it. Go to the head of the class.

In society's never ending quest to have unbridled access to players and their raw emotions... some idiot thought it would be ok to put a microphone near an angry basketball player during the heat of a game? TNT should be fined for being stupid.

Maybe its just me but I think Kobe should have got at least a 5 game suspention added to next season.

All the whining he does and he barely gets hit with this?

I'm pretty sure if Nash & Kobe were to be in an altercation and Steve called Kobe a ****** and it aired on TNT, Nash would get like a $200k fine + suspention. Why? Because he's because its discrimination against black people.

Same way what Kobe did was also discriminating gay people.

Unless the ref is openly gay it is very doubtful that Kobe meant the word with any sexual connotation.

So to keep the situations similar - it would be more like Kobe calling Nash the "N" word.

I can't understand how kids expect these gun yielding rap boneheads to be role models anyhow. They are terrific athletes and competitors. That's all. Other than that they're just like regular people/jocks, some good, some bad. Never thought Kobe was a class act like Steve Nash or Grant Hill. Good ballplayer though.
