Have to say I'm totally shocked by all the Kobe enabling in this thread. What do you think would happen if you called one of your co-workers a ****** to their face? I'd guess that unless you can twirl a basketball on your pinkie you'd be fired in about 2 minutes.

Yes, and if I wore a bball jersey to work, I would be sent home to change. I am pretty sure bunch of sticks would be fine.

Enablers? I don't get it. :)

Gay former NBA player slams Kobe Bryant for Gay Slur

Gay former NBA player slams Kobe Bryant for Gay Slur

John Amaechi, one of the first NBA players to announce he’s gay, has ripped Kobe Bryant for calling a ref a f**king f***ot during a game this week. RADAR ONLINE reports Amaechi, 40, who played against Bryant in the late 1990s wasn’t happy.

“It was incredibly foolish — it made matters worse because it was really a non-apology. “Kobe Bryant who is a culture-setter in today’s society and never really fully addressed the implications of what he actually said. He seemed to be apologizing for the way people would interpret what he said, not the literal meaning of it. He did not accept full responsibility.”

If I was one of the three best employees in my company, and one of the company's faces, we'd do some nice PR on my mistake and I'd get a slap on the wrist.

I read most of the replies here, and I am surprised at the number of posters that don't get it at all. Many of you do, and that does make me feel better though.

I think those of you who point out the on-court language and behavior of some of the other NBA athletes that have gone free of scrutiny are really on to something too. Was Kobe wrong? Absolutely. Should he have been fined? Absolutely. Was 100K excessive? Probably. Did the NBA do this because he is such a high profile athlete? My gut says yes, and it may have gone under the radar somewhat if it was some 10th or 11th man, and that is really unfortunate.

I am inclined to agree with Kenny Smith on his tweet earlier this week.

I agree with the "Kobe fine"!100% My question is why players don't get fined 100k for use of the "N" word which is used prevalently? It offends me.

That is the NBA under David Stern. They NBA front office is full of hypocrites in my opinion, with Stern being the biggest among them.

If I was paid over 20 million a year, I would probably be bringing in much more than that. So I am thinking my employer would look the other way.

Truth

I cannot wait to see what the NBA looks like after he steps down. Perhaps "parity" might be a word that finally exists?

Lame response.. Even if a bench player that only comes in in a blowout did this, he'd get fined too.. He wouldnt be fired.. Just fined..

Perhaps you missed the parts where KG and Kmart did the exact same thing, and nobody even cared. You can watch a Youtube of Kmart dropping it on Cuban, from live TV, in this very thread.

Saying it to Cuban and saying it to an official are very different things.

No, they are not. Stern said NOTHING about the official being involved, and only the offensiveness of the term.

Of course we all know that Stern is protecting refs as one level of this, but that isn't the public face. It's the offensive term. Which apparently isn't offensive enough to draw a fine for Kmart when said to one of the owners of a franchise. Or to KG when said on the court. But at least Allen Iverson got a $5K fine for saying it to a fan.

Different jobs have different sets of rules. Trash talking is part of the game. You should have heard some of the things that *gasp* Jordan said in his time.

Interesting. Where do you work Donald? You are a smart guy, so you may just be 1 of the 3 best employees at your company. So I challenge you to test your theory on yourself (or if you don't think you are worthy of top 3 consideration, ask a top 3 employee to do this for you)!! Sometime this week at work, while you are in a very public place and where your boss can hear you, yell at one of your co-workers and call him/her a "******" to their face. Let's see what happens!

Will you accept the challenge?

That's true. Nobody wants to sanitize the game, but personal slurs just cross the line. Though if he called the ref a "lazy fat white man" that might have been OK. :)

LOL.

I adore you for thinking I'd be top three, or even could sway a top three exec to do anything, much less something to cause a PR problem.

You are now my favorite poster.
