I think Kolb can/will be a good QB - i also think you may drive yourselves nuts in the short term ... i'm expecting sloppy play from pretty much every team to start the season as it is ..... if you are putting in a new OL, he's learning a new type of system, language, receivers, etc and then learning how to be the guy at QB and dealing with all of that there is going to be a learning curve
But on a 6 year deal, this isn't a move for just 2011 and could end up really looking good in 3-4 years if he pans out
i don't think the dollars are unreasonable ... i'm sure there are escalators, outs, etc so if he hits the full $63M it will be for good performance, $22M guaranteed isn't that bad for a QB or a 6 year contract length
around $10M a year isn't bad for a QB who can play either ..... i think it's pretty reasonable .... if he shows he can play then in 2015 you have a quality starter making $10M ... which may look like a good bargain after the next wave of QB FAs bump up the prices for all
One of those QBs will be rodgers who signed his 6 yr 65M contract in Oct of the 2008 season when he became entrenched as the starter .... at that point he had 3 years on the bench and 35 pass attempts under his belt going into 2008 and in 2008 he had a 4-3 record as a starter when he extended
What do you think he would cost today after a SB win and some amazing performances?
What do you think the gap will be between Kevin Kolbs 2015 contract and Aaron Rodgers 2015 contract?
Current average of the top 5 QBs is around $15M .... that is only going to go up and will bring the next grouping of QBs into that price range
I wouldn't be surprised that if by the end of Kolbs deal that $10M per season was near the bottom of NFL starting QB contracts
the trade price is significant though if it is DRC & and flat 2nd rounder .... however, nothing is without risk or cost
