I don't think you need to cook shark-food. (they set her on a floating pyre and set it aflame)
That was the ceremony part.
It goes back to something I read and also saw on tv once, I think it was an island near the Philippines not positive. The indigenous people bury all their dead at sea. They have a huge problem with shark attacks so they have a ritual where they catch a shark, stuff the shark's mouth full of poisonous anemones until the shark dies. It's a "revenge" for all the shark attacks. ANd of course experts say that the reason for all the attacks(beyond they're in the water a lot) is that they essentially "trained" the sharks to eat people by burying their dead at sea for generations.
So my theory was the others want their shark to be trained to eat people in the water?
