Now irony of ironies, I'm off to give a presentation to the marketing group here at work. (I'm not kidding!)

Are you kidding? Trying to get a Church's chicken loyalist to eat KFC is like asking a Chevy bigot to drive a Ford. You'd be surprised what people get passionate about!

Oh and by the way, good luck with your meeting! :)

I'm all about history and tradition.....

...but we're named after a freakin' color. We're the Arizona Red. We have a picture of the cardinal bird as our logo but that's not the origin of the name. Before anyone mentions the Browns they're named after one of the greatest coaches ever, not the color. With other pro and college teams sharing the name there's no real national identity linking it to Arizona. It's not even that great of a name. Many teams have changed names over the years because the old ones were just plain stupid. The Knicks shortened it from the knickerbockers. Who wants to play for the New York Pants? Or the Boston Beaneaters? It'd be nice the get rid of some of the negative connotation.

I hate to be the thousandth person to tell you, but perception is reality my friend. And there is plenty of truth to modern day marketing. How, you may ask? Consumers will only agree with a message that has truth to it. If you don't get the consumer to agree with your message, then you have just wasted millions of dollars on your campaign.

For example, if the Cardinals started a new campaign that said "Come see the NFC West powerhouse AZ Cardinals" people would laugh them out of town. It's only when a campaign message is cemented in the truth that it really works.

No. If I wanted to call you a non-loyal fan, I would very explicitly call you a non-loyal fan. There wouldn't be any ambiguity.

I like tradition. I'm looking forward to establishing some in Arizona.

So a "come see the perrennial losing Cards compete for the #1 pick in the 2004 draft" would attract more fans? (-:

If they do it just to change the name it's pointless, if it's part of actual change, I could learn to like it.

Yeah

Bottom line JON is that you have given me no reason for the Cards to change their name.....if you like tradition then that's a reason to keep it....I guess you think the Cubs should change their name?

THERE IS A HUGE HUGE difference here.

Section 11 is from Arizona. Thus roots for Arizona teams. Good for him, but I unfortunately can't bring myself to root for Philly, NJ, or NY teams. Being from Trenton, NJ.

I am not from Arizona, but I root for the Cardinals. I don't give a pig's poop about Arizona. Too hot! I trying to go the opposite way and am planning to move to Maine, or actually ?Austriallia? Down Under.

So if/when the Cardinals change thier name then in my eyes the Cardinals team dies off and I am left without a team. They probably will rocket off to be a great franchise afterward knowing my luck.

But thus why out of state fans will probably die off with the name change.

Kinda like when I used to be a Hartford Whalers fan. I am most certainly no a Hurricane fan. I actually been looking for a hockey team to "root for". I don't watch hockey so I really can't root for anyone.

Peace, and hopefully the Cards stay the Cards.

BTW Section 11, cute dog!

This "rumor" about a name change is complete invention.

The Cards have already said they will change the uniforms.

I'm amazed this nonsense still sucks people in.

I agree with you. And I think we both know that a message like that wouldn't work, but I appreciated the humor in it.

To illustrate my point about honest marketing, try this story... For years Avis was getting their butts handed to them by Hertz. All their marketing was focused on how Avis was just as big as Hertz. All Hertz had to say is "We're #1". And they were right. Avis wasn't even close to the revenues and marketshare of Hertz. But Avis discovered that being #1 has some drawbacks. Maybe you're too big and you can't offer personalized service. Maybe you're too expensive and the value isn't there. So Avis changed their whole marketing message to "We Try Harder". And they instituted some programs that made customers feel more "taken care of".

The Cardinals could learn a valuable lesson from Avis. They should create a message that speaks to the fact they they are trying to get better and that they are still the cheapest ticket in the NFL.

Changing uniforms but not the name, right?

I hope so! Cardinals is a great and classic football name!

And the color RED, is a great sports color.

So they should continue to market to the handful of out of state fans that like the Cardinals from way back when at the expense of the home state fans? That makes sense.

Watch the stands at a Cubs game in St. Louis....you'll see a plethora of Cubs.......but go ahead you guys must be right......keep the Bidwills.....change the name......frik tradition......the Bidwills must know best.

How stupid are you?

Changing the name will put more fans in the stands?

Can you say winning?

I knew you could.

Nope.

If it helps out the organization, and all in-state/hometeam fans then do it!!

If it is the right move to do for Arizona, and the football organization then do it.

Out of staters would be **** out of luck.

I was just saying that in MY case, and maybe in other peoples minds that once/if the Cardinals name was killed off they would stop rooting for the team in Arizona and find another one.

You gotta also remember this Cardinals team was also in Chicago and St. Louis. So those Cardinals fans would probably turn to the Bears, or Rams. Yecch!

So you lose some out of state fans? WHO cares? If the change is needed then the change is needed.

If it happens:
I will root for the Cards untill 2006 and then when they change I guess I got to find another team. Good news for Arizona based fans, and bad news for out of state Cardinals fans.

Peace

What if it did? Then would you change the name of the team? What does that have to do with anything? It so happens that I have an MBA with a focus on marketing if that makes you feel any better.

The brilliant mind change the name advocates may be surprised....they could lose a few fans....but they don't care.....they'll outnumber any opposing team at ahome game just because they changed the name.....sure Bob!!!
