Stoudemire IS NOT >>> Gasol

Its one thing to be a fan of the team... its another to be just blind.

Gasol has been more than servicable and has proven he can be a 20/10/5/2 player as he did for a most of the season before he got injured. On the Grizzlies, he obviously has fallen of the radar as the team is going through changes wit the young crew in Gay, Lowry, Conley etc.

Gasol has range, has passing skills, can block shots, has a back to the basket game... etc etc etc...

If Stoudemire ever becomes a better rebounder/defender... then he will leave the tier he is one at the moment... which is the same tier as Gasol.

Amare is 100 times better than Gasol sorry. We have seen these 2 go head to head in the playoffs several times and Gasol never had a chance.

Amare is a better scorer, shooter, rebounder, shotblocker and defender than Gasol.

It's still a problem because the Lakers will have Bynum, Gasol AND Odom and we are just staying put and our great coach tells our GM to stay with the guys we have although the season is going worse than all of the ones before while other teams are getting better.

The bigger problem is that they can, and will, come at Amare in turns to draw fouls to get him out of the game, while at the same time Amare is not to attack them for the same purpose as it's not Suns ball. However, if we get back KT for the playoff run, we might be fine by putting KT on Bynum who is the biggest threat.

100 times? Really?

There are only 20 players in the NBA that put up numbers like Pau. Amare is one of those 20.

So really, 100 times?

Wow, maybe after you're done smoking that stuff, you should refrain from drinking the Bong Water.

I'm not saying Amare isn't a great player, he is, but Amare isn't 100 times better then Gasol in any of those areas. Especially on defense.

He is playing significantly more minutes than Amare and gets a good amount of fewer blocks and rebounds plus his team is willing to trade him for crap and a young PG prospect when they already have Conley, Navarro and Lowry.

Gasol is a good player but that's it, good like Lamar Odom good but not allstar caliber good.

Gasol is the definition of a soft player and the only thing he is doing better than Amare is passing, though Amare is a much better passer than his average shows.

Conspiracy Theory

I am not a believer in conspiracy theories...aside from that this trade certainly raises a whole lot of questions in my mind. Was it "engineered" by the NBA? DId the league have a new Laker/Celtic rivalry in mind if completed?? Looking at the attendance in a number of cities being down, how will we get ratings and interest back up??

I have little interest in NBA basketball, but as a casual fan, when I see stuff like this go down it certainly makes me wonder. The NBA is "stuck" with the worst run franchise in sports...yes kids...even worse than our beloved Cardinals USED TO BE....the Knicks take that prize hands down...so how do we at least bulk up the second biggest market?? Easy to figure out!!

what's the trade rumore between Philadelphia and Phoenix?

Diaw and LB for Dalembert and iggy?

Please let this happen, LB has turned into a "chucker" his game the last couple of weeks has suffered cuz teams just double and triple him and he still does not pass the ball. I saw Diaw at the Greenskeeper at the open yesterday and the word soft popped into my head  Iggy is a good replacement for Marion when he will walk to get his cap number off of the books and everyone with a brain knows that once his hops leave him he is done and it can happen at anytime once you hit 30, it happened to me when I hit 22

well you're one of the biggest Amare fans not just in these boards/forums but in others... so your opinion of Amare will be biased.

Amare has weaknesses that hurts the team as much as he helps them.

Gasol too... but he is the better all rounder than Amare, he has legit post game and has a very good IQ he can play while being double team.. by being a very good passer.

he is not as unstoppable as Amare... but he has more depth.

Yes I will take Amare over Gasol any day, but you have to respect other players too.

What really separates Amare from Randolph, Gasol, Jefferson these days??

Other big men has surpassed Amare or has matched him in terms of impact... Boozer, Nowitski etc.

Howard has surpassed him over all... sure Howard lacks a lot of offensive prowess but he can finish and his defense and rebounding and interior presense > Amare.

3rd in the league in PER for example, trailing only Lebron and Chris Paul.

Boozer has surpassed Amare? Now that is funny. And is that Zach Randolph you were talking about?

PER is a decent way to judge contribution.. stat wise.

But you know and everyone else knows... unfortunately... that Amare will let layups and cutters in the lane... sure he blocks 2 of those attempts a game...

Zach Randolph was a black hole when he was in Portland, but he was a 23/10 player... he didnt play defense either... just like Amare.

Carlos Boozer is on the same league as Amare the last 2 seasons, a nightly 20/10 guy... with high fg%.

If Amare ever plays defense... maybe he can leave these guys behind? no?

Amare's PER is based on his stats of 23pt/9rb/2blk and 60% stat line... doesnt show his inability to affect the defensive end.

Gasol has seen double teams his entire career and is a much more consistent player than Lamar. Yes, Amare is a better player but he is not 100 times better. They are both top 30 players in the league. Putting him with the best player in the league and an up and coming center in Bynum, plus a decent to good, if overpaid, player in Lamar Odom, well that makes me very happy.

Nah, I'll give Gasol the rebounding and defending
But, yes, Amare is a better scorer, shooter (46%eFG to Gasol's 40%eFG) and shot blocker
But with all these LA fans now, we'll have to hear this "Amare is not better then Gasol" when he's eaten his Spaniard ass alive.

And again
LA will NOT win the Pacific.

No matter how you look at it this trade really has improved the Lakers. I would have given up anyone on our roster beside Amare & Nash to get him. Suprisingly Iavoroni didn't try to get Marion in return for Gasol, which would have been a better return for the Grizzles. But then again he already has Gay & Warrick so I guess Marion wouldn't have been needed.

Too bad we paid SEA to take Thomas off our hands, he and Barbosa would have probably been enough to get Gasol. Now there are rumors that Thomas with his expiring contract & surprising play this year will be a hot commodity come trade deadline time.

Funny because that is exactly what we need right now.

So why is Gasol averaging UNDER 9 rebounds per game in OVER 36 minutes per game?

Why was Gasol being owned in the playoffs everytime? Hasnt won a single playoff game in his career.

I don't really care about Gasol, the Suns didnt need this guy. He is a loser and one of the softest players in the league.

What upsets me is that the Lakers gave up almost NOTHING. We traded Kurt Thomas and 2 firsts for capspace, they trade Kwame Brown and 3 firsts for Gasol, doesn't seem right.

I'm also curious to see what the Lakers lineup will be because Lamar Odom in my opinion is a good PF but an average SF. So Odom is most likely playing 3 and Walton is out of the starting lineup who I think may just be better suited for the position among the 2.

It's not like he has another good rebounder on his team or that his team is playing small ball all the time.

Gasol may argueably be a top 30 player. Amare is no lower than top 15 though and D'Antoni is wasting him with his system and small ball. I'd trade Marion for Shaq in an instant. Marion in the playoffs isn't very valueable anyway. Shaq would instantly make us a very good defensive team and people would realize that Amare is not that bad defensively when he has another big next to him that can defend the basket and the other teams biggest player allowing Amare to defend a smaller guy.

It's not just Gasol you have to worry about. It's Gasol, Bynum, and Kobe. Hell even Odom gives the Suns trouble everytime they play.

The Lakers have proven this year that with Bynum they can beat the Suns. With Bynum and Gasol it's gonna be a slaughter.

While we still haven't proved anything, the Lakers have a monstrous frontline. Doesn't exactly bode well with one of the worst rebounding teams in the leauge.

I never said he is exceptional at it, he's alright, nothin' great..nothin that would put us over the top, not even close. Last thing we need is another softy.
And just look at Memphis' team differential in rebounding over the past 4 years, he's "anchored" one of the worst rebounding teams in the league for years now..he would by no means make us a much better team at pulling down boards.

I just look at it from the point that with Amare & Gasol on the block it really would benefit our shooters when help collapes into the paint allowing them to kick out to shooters. It would also have helped against SA in that Duncan could not cover both Amare & Pau so it would take some pressure of either so that neither would have to carry the load down low.

No offense, but this is what people were saying about Eddy Curry/Zach Randolph this year. While it has worked before with two scorers at the 4 and 5 positions, you have to have at least one of them who's good at defense and rebounding. Amare nor Pau are. We'd be better off with a Camby type of player at the five and Amare at the four. With Nash and Amare, we really don't need any more premier go-to scorers, just role players.

Gasol is still a terrible defender, so we don't have to be all that worried on that end. the problem is the size in the lakers front court now. i mean their small forward is as big as our center now. this trade will make them absolutely smash us on the boards.

Kerr needs to step up and make a trade or we will probably lose the division.

A lot of you are angry that the Lakers gave so little to get Gasol. The word is that since Memphis' owner Michael Heisley has been trying to sell the franchise he wanted to dump Gasol's salary without taking any long-term contracts. This way the club seems more attractive to potential buyers when Kwame Brown's contract expires after this season. The payroll will have been cut by over 20 million dollars.

Memphis' owner doesn't care how much his team sucks. He didn't want any of the Laker's better players like Odom/Radmonovic/Walton because of their contracts. And the Lakers prob. refused to include Bynum/Farmar. Quite simply, the Lakers got lucky. However, as the saying goes "you make your own good luck." The Lakers made an error trading Caron Butler for Kwame but held onto him long enough for his true value to shine, as an expiring contract to trade for a great player. Unfortunately the Suns had a similar contract situation with Kurt Thomas but blew it.

Think about it.
Lakers have a terrible big man with a 9 million dollar contract expiring in 2008 on a team that already has big men bynum/odom and rebounds well. They have the patience to hold onto Brown untill his value is at a maximum, right now before the trade deadline, and parlay him, a rookie, and two 1st round picks into a former all-star big man.

Suns have a pretty decent big man with an 8 million dollar contract expiring in 2008 on a team that needs a big man desperately and rebounds second worst in the league. This big man played a crucial role in the last playoff series against the Suns' big western rival. They trade him before the season starts, not even giving him a chance to contribute up till the trade deadline. They have to include two first round draft picks just to convince the Sonics to take a good player without giving anything back besides a trade exception which expires soon, most likely unused. Lets not forget they gave us a second round draft pick too. JOY! We'd probably sell it for 1 million dollars instead of drafting the next Redd/Ginobili/JoshHoward anyway.

And there is another thing we must not forget: luxury tax is not assessed until after the trade deadline. This is why I originally thought the Suns would not move KT until mid-season and was surprised to see them unload him so quickly without waiting to see if a better trade scenario came up.

The fact is, the Suns could have held onto KT until now and still avoided the LT hit if they traded him before the deadline. Of course, if they dealt him for Gasol, the LT would be the same as with KT, but at least it would be a more justifiable expense. But the Suns jumped the gun, again, depriving themselves of any future trade assets.
