Nick Pierco is reporting on his Twitter feed that 1B Brandon Allen has been traded to Oakland for Right Handed reliever Brad Ziegler. The Snakes will also send Reliever Jordan Norberto.

Seems like a good deal for the D'backs. Ziegler could be the big help in the pen that the Snakes have been looking for. His ERA is quite a bit below league average for a reliever.

I assume this means the Snakes are all in for trying Goldschmidt out at 1st at some point this season.

Interesting trade - now watch Allen tear up in Oakland...

Actually, I think Allen is the proverbial AAAA player - flashes at the MLB level, no consistancy.

Just heard from someone in Mobile who tells me Goldschmidt is getting promoted.

Brandon Allen's 25, which is approaching middle age for baseball players. He had to show signs of life in his bat or it was time to move him. D-Backs did the right thing. He can go to AL and probably cultivate a career as a professional hitter. He'll get more at-bats and teams will be able to live a bit easier with bad at-bats. In the NL you have to produce with runners on in late innings, especially a corner position player. He's just never going to be that guy.

I'd be surprised if Allen is still in the bigs 3 years from now... He's just not a major league caliber hitter. Jon is right...

What you've all said is probably true. But with our lacking a #4 or 5 type batter, and Brandon Allen showing that potential, I just wish he had been given a chance in the middle of the order rather than near the bottom.

He took quite a few bases on balls, but that doesn't put up the kind of stats the team wanted to see.

Let's see if the A's give him that opportunity or do the same. And how he performs.

Of course, when you have a Goldschmidt waiting in the wings, it is like getting a relief pitcher and 1B in one trade.

I just hope that Goldschmidt isn't placed seventh in the order (eighth if Parra is not playing). Goldy is a righty hitter, which would give us a bunch in the middle. But I'd rather have that than Young/Montero/Drew rotating at cleaup.

After a few games, I wouldn't mind batting Goldschmidt third, ahead of Justin.

Great trade. We were not going to play Goldschmidt and Allen st the same time and PG needs to be up here

You can't hit Goldy third. He can't run and he doesn't project as a guy that will hit for average. He's a pure 4/5 hole guy as they come. Upton, BTW, is an ideal 3 guy. So this works out PG can hit 4. I doubt they start him there, though. He'll probably start out 7/8 until they see him hit ML pitchers.

A good manager makes it easier for his people to do their job well.

No one is more of a traditionalist about batting orders than I. Your points are absolutely right.

But why not think outside the box and bat Goldschmidt ahead of Upton and Montero so he can begin his Major League career with CONFIDENCE!

How many hittable pitches is he going to see batting in front of the pitcher? Hardly any.

How many young guys have we already doomed by doing that, the latest being Brandon Allen? Too many.

Goldy has earned that consideration with his Minor League performance. Even more important, the D'backs should do everything they can to get the best out of him.

Remember, this is the team whose primary cleanup hitters have been a line drive hitting shortstop and the popup king of the Major Leagues.

It's not like there is no room for Goldschmidt in the heart of the order.

I like your argument for batting Goldschmidt at the four spot. However, that is a lot of pressure on a rookie to bat him there while we are contending for the division. I think it makes more sense to hit him 7 for now until he gets comfortable.

I was really suggesting third in the batting order, moving Upton and Miggy to 4-5.

He actually looked pretty comfortable -- at bat, in the field, in the dugout. What he could use is protection. And to see a fair amount of fastballs to build his Major League confidence.
