AICN reports that multiple spies at Sony have confirmed that Thomas Hayden Church will indeed be playing the villain The Sandman. There's apparently a ton of Sandman conceptual art all over the Spidey-offices. The character was a prison escapee hiding out at an atomic testing facility when a explosion goes off. His molecules fuse with sand, giving him essentially shape shifting ability along with various other skills.

Probably, but I wouldn't rule out the Sandman or the Vulture. I could see Lowell playing both of them, too. The Sandman would look pretty sweet on the big screen, IMO.
I hope it's true, too. I still think the Sandman would look totally sweet and awesome on film.

:stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

I'm hoping it's Sandman as well.

Just looked through some old issues of Marvel Tales (which reprinted older issues of Spidey). Sandman made quite a few appearances.

:entersandman:

Two Villains in Spider-Man 3?
Source: Latino Review
April 15, 2005

It appears there could be a possibility that there will be more than one villain in Spider-Man 3, according to a new rumor at Latino Review:

A while back Ain't-It-Cool-News broke the story that Thomas Hayden Church will indeed be playing SANDMAN and that here's a ton of Sandman conceptual art all over the Spidey-offices.

Well today 'Anonymous' tells us the following: "Yes the Sandman will be in Spider-Man 3 but he's not the only villain. And no it isn't Black Cat like some people were suggesting. It will be SANDMAN AND HOBGOBLIN"

Take this with a grain of salt right now and stay tuned for more on the villain or villains.

---------------------------------------------------------

I'd be cool with that, if true. A classic villain and a more recent one.

I'd just like to see a goblin that resembles one from the comics - not an armored one. :D

Good thing they put Sandman in it. Hobgoblin alone would have sucked. I saw enough of him in the first one.

Yup Yup Yup. Methinks it would also be cool that Dr. Conners/Lizard story gets a little more developed and not unloaded into this flick.

Sony is Planning Six Spider-Man Films
Source: Sci Fi Wire
May 4, 2005

Sci Fi Wire talked to "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi who says Sony Pictures plans to make six films in total, and that he would consider helming all of them.

"I've heard Amy Pascal [chairman of Sony's motion picture group] say she wants to make six Spider-Man pictures," Raimi said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles. "So I think she's a woman of her word. And if she says there'll be six, there'll be six. ... If they were to ask me, and if I felt as passionate as I feel now about the character and had this great hunger and desire to tell the story, which I really do now, you couldn't keep me away from it."

Raimi said the upcoming third Spider-Man film will in part chart Peter Parker's (Tobey Maguire) interior journey as he deals with his feelings about the death of his beloved Uncle Ben.

"The task that I had was to try and understand where he was when we last left him ... at the end of Spider-Man 2, trying to figure out what he lacked as a human being, as far as where he was immature and what he had not learned," Raimi said. "And certainly there's so much for that kid to learn. He really has been denied a social life. He's just been focused on being this do-gooder. And never really even dealing with the death of his uncle, just paying down his guilt with every criminal he brings to justice, never really addressing his own guilt that he feels in his heart and coming to terms with it. He's never really looked inside himself. So I think this picture ... he's going to have [to] look a little more inside himself and recognize and deal with some of the deficiencies that he has as a human being."

Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) will play a new as-yet-unidentified villain who is appropriate to that emotional journey, Raimi added. "We had to choose a villain that represented a proper obstacle in the path of that growth," Raimi said. "And so, though I'd rather not say who Thomas Haden Church is playing just yet—because Sony likes to make a proper presentation to the fans along with Avi Arad from Marvel Comic books—he was chosen because he represented that proper obstacle to ... Peter Parker's growth." Spider-Man 3 is in preproduction now.

Sam Raimi on the Spider-Man 3 F/X
Source: Now Playing Magazine
May 13, 2005

While Sam Raimi remains mostly mum on the plot points of Spider-Man 3, he did fill in Now Playing this morning on what's going on with the visual effects for the wallcrawler's next adventure. Here's a clip:

For starters, the director acknowledged that the effects will be a combination of the practical and the computer generated varieties, just as they were for Spider-Man 2's Doc Ock.

"Absolutely, the new villain, the new powers [will be a mix]," Raimi says. "We"re shooting tests right now to determine what is best pulled off believably as a practical effect and what can't be, what's too dangerous, what is too unreasonable, and what looks better in CG."

----------------------------------------

Latest rumor, from AICN, is that 3 and 4 might be filmed together.

Six films would be great, but it's silly for sony to put a number on them like that unless their trying to get Rami under contract for six films. What if #6 makes just as much money as #1? Are they going to stop making them just because they put an artificial ceiling on the franchise? No, they're not. The Almighty Dollar speaks too loudly.

Topher Grace Joins Spider-Man 3
Source: Columbia Pictures
May 19, 2005

Topher Grace has joined the cast of Spider-Man 3, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studio's Avi Arad.

Grace will join Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Thomas Haden Church in the blockbuster franchise.

Spider-Man 3 is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, and will reunite returning cast members with director Sam Raimi and producers Ziskin and Arad, the successful filmmaking team responsible for the first two films.

The "Spider-Man" film franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales to date. Production on Spider-Man 3, which was written by Alvin Sargent, is scheduled to begin early next year.

"I couldn't be more excited about the direction we are taking the continuing adventures of Peter Parker," said Raimi. "Topher Grace is an extraordinarily talented actor and will be perfect for the complexities of the role we are developing."

While speculation continues about which characters will be called into action, the studio will not comment on the new roles beyond confirming the casting of Grace and Church.

Makes you wonder about this "April Fool's" posting...

Spidey Recast

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Rafe Telsch: 2005-04-01

Fans of the Spider-Man franchise may remember that prior to shooting on Spider-Man 2, Toby Maguire was injured while filming Seabiscuit. The injury was rumored to be responsible for Maguire not showing up for filming, and word was spread that the producers of Spider-Man 2 were looking at Jake Gyllenhall (then boyfriend of Spidey star Kirsten Dunst) as a potential replacement for the webslinger. Does history repeat itself?

News hit the web last night that Toby Maguire, famous for his disinterest in sequels despite signing a three picture deal, has refused to appear in the third Spider-Man film. Whether this is related to the recent news that Thomas Hayden Church would be playing Spidey’s rival in the film is unknown, but apparently Maguire has made it absolutely clear to Sam Raimi that he will not be a part of Spider-Man 3.

On top of potential casting news, Variety is reporting that Raimi has already started work on Maguire’s replacement with an interesting choice - Topher Grace. Best known for his leading role on television’s “That 70’s Show”, Grace certainly has the wiry frame for Peter Parker, and having recently left the show for film also has the availability. “Topher’s a natural smart-ass, so Spider-Man’s quick one-liner nature should come easily to him.” said Raimi in a street-side interview. “Besides, it’s the first of April, so what else would you expect? Only a real fool would buy something like this.”

He is.

Here's a question - if it's not a clone storyline or just a different character completely, and he is going to replace Maguire - how would they pull that off?

Just make the transition like they do on soaps...

Narrator: The role of Peter Parker/Spidey is now being played by Topher Grace... :D

I don't know anything about Venom, but I know he's similar to Spider-Man (in look, at least). Could he be Venom BEFORE he became Venom? I know, a stupid question...

Uh no. Eddie Brock was a muscle bound dude thats about twice the size of Parker thats why he would he was such a cool villain (well until the comics mad his character stale). He was a bigger, stronger Spiderman with natural webbing, although they changed that in the movie (oh well).
