I was more interested in their second choice, Ben Affleck.

Agreed. That would have gotten me excited. Say what u will about afflecks acting prowess but the films he's directed have not only been extremely entertaining, but had a level of depth I've never seen from a JJ AbraMs film.

My only beef so far is with them calling it Ep. VII, which I could be wrong but to me implies doing another complete trilogy arc and presumably involving a Skywalker. That could unnecessarily put them into a tight corner creatively when they could instead use the vast sandbox to create individual movies that all belong in the same universe (somewhat like say the Bond franchise)

That's what I thought they were doing. And in between episodes there were going to have spin-offs for specific characters. Ala the Marvel/Avengers movies.

I am happy with the choice but I wouldn't have minded Affleck either. I would hold on to some of these names because some of these interested Directors will probably get their shot at some point for one of these films.

Could be, I haven't been following incredibly closely but I thought I read something that said this was supposed to be the start of a trilogy story-wise.

If they are doing trilogies shouldn't X, XI, and XII be next followed by VII, VIII, and IX? :D

Does anybody get the feeling now that Star Trek has effectively lost its stigma? I know there was a lot of anticipation for the 2nd film this summer, but it seems like the excitement has lessened considerably with the news that Abrams is directing Star Wars.

I believe this is correct. Most of the articles I read reference a trilogy.

I think it's pretty evident now Good Will Hunting was probably more Affleck than Damon. For years, I would have sworn it was reversed. Affleck is a much more thoughtful writer and director than he ever was as an actor. (I actually wish Kevin Smith would write something and let Affleck direct it).

Although I like Affleck's directing skills - Argo was solid - I just don't think scifi is his genre to direct.

Ha! I knew I could come to ASFN and find this pessimism. As someone who reads through these posts months or years after the fact, I have found this pattern when something like this was announced. First everyone is shocked, then they go through the long list of reasons why this won't work, then they start to turn the corner and get excited, then most of the time everyone celebrates the eventual great film. I've seen it a hundred times.

I can't wait to check back in 5 years and read about what a brilliant choice this was.

I am such a sucker for this franchise that they could have Uwe Boll direct and I would still pay to see it in the theater (althoughthat would guarantee I left disappointed) so I am thrilled with Abrams being tabbed.
