If I heard that correctly the Suns have made a trade and that's why Robert Archibald isn't with the team.

No specifics right now.

Donnell Harvey is not with Orlando either because of a pending trade...

According to realgm, archibald for Harvey straight up works... But I don't know... If it's true, it seems pretty minor.

Also, both players have expiring contracts this season.

Harvey is a 6'8" PF, so I guess if we do get him, Googs' playing time this year is all but gone.

They didn't say anything other than Archibald will be traded so we don't know anything else...

Btw, Harvey was that guy who threw the touchdown pass to Bowen last season when the nuggets beat the Suns.

Harvey plays simliar to Bo Outlaw and when Zarko gets back can defend strongest forward position on 2nd team alongside Zarko - like Cliff did at times with Suns defending either position. IF trade is even for Harvey...

Leander just said that the Suns have traded Archibald to Orlando for Donell Harvey and it is just pending physicals for both players.

There's got to be a future draft pick involved going from Phoenix to Orlando. It just doesn't make any sense otherwise.

I've heard Bryan Colangelo mention Harvey before. I know the Suns organization was high on him.

Why not? This sounds like a substitute for Amare and Z until they get back. They must not have thought Archie was worth playing at all.

Wouldn't make much sense because Harvey obviously is a much better player than Archibald. And I doubt the little amount that Harvey makes more this season changes that.

Even Archie and a second doesn't make any sense for Orlando.

However, Harvey only averages 6 points per game and has never averaged more than 8 in his career. And this was the guy that Orlando recently was considering to start.

According to hoopshype, Harvey makes $100,000 more than Archibald this year.

I agree that the trade does not make sense from Orlando's standpoint.

Harvey is only 23 years old and has shown that he can play in this league. In 100+ games with Denver, he averaged (very approximately) 8 points and 5.5 rebounds in 22 minutes. True, that's hardly starter material, but it is a lot more than Archibald has shown so far, which is ... uh ... zilch. In fact Archibald is five months older than Harvey.

I wonder if Harvey is a destructive locker-room influence, thinking he should be getting more time? Since Archibald has no value, basically the Magic are saying that Harvey is worth less than the $100,000 they will save. (Or $200,000 with the luxury tax.) That is very strange indeed.

Heh, maybe the Magic are counting on the Suns including a very high second-round pick.

RealGM Source: Update: RealGM.com Moderator Brian Roberts (a.k.a. Stickemupco) has learned from a source that Donnell Harvey has indeed been traded to the Phoenix Suns inexchange for Robert Archibald and Phoenix's 2004 second-round pick.

The Magic plan on eventually sending this pick to the Atlanta Hawks to pay off a second-round pick that is due this year from a 2000 trade that sent guard Anthony Johnson to the Orlando Magic.

Harvey was a defense guy at Denver. He had 5.3 rpg last season in 20.9 minutes (that translates to 9.2 in 35 minutes). He may not get any minutes after Amare and Zarko get back, but he would certainly be a good addition.

That's a great deal for the Phoenix Suns. I think he could really help until those other guys return, and provide some defense, rebounding, energy, and maybe even a little scoring off the bench when they get back. IMO it was definitely worth a second-round pick.

Harvey is a "dirt worker" as Cotton likes to say.
An athletic guy to help get the boards. He would be a great addition to the team.

Harvey was a FA signing for Orlando with a one-year contract, so trading him away won't cause the Magic much pain. I'm guessing Harvey was the odd man out now that the Magic figured out that neither Drew Gooden nor Juwan Howard is effective at SF.

The prize for Orlando is the second-round pick, which they will apparently send to Atlanta so they can keep their own second-rounder, which might turn out to be a (somewhat) valuable pick.

Phoenix has to be using Harvey as a five-week stopgap--I don't think there's room for him in the rotation when Amare and Zarko get back--but the team doesn't like second-round picks anyway, so the price is right. With Harvey on board, the Suns don't have to play Marion at PF unless they want to.

There are quite a few players who can't motivate themselves unless they're getting regular PT, and maybe Harvey falls into that category.

My main thought about this trade is that it has to burn Frank Johnson's britches just a little bit--he got fired right after the Bo Outlaw comment, and two weeks later, the Suns make a trade for Harvey...

:D

love this deal. is harvey the second coming? no. is he an upgrade to the roster? yes. i think with this acquisition and the jahidi acquisition we're slowly but surely putting together some useful role players for our stars. this is largely a lost season, but i like the youthful, athletic, veterans that the colangeli are assembling.

i've not always loved their moves (see googs, longley, klein), but lately i've been impressed with their smaller moves.

Klein? Boy does that take us back a few years.

It is possible that Orlando thinks Archibald might be able to play a little at center (he is 6'11" and 250). NBA.com not show any statistics for Hunter and Pachulia (the two backup centers on the Magic), so who knows. With White, Voskuhl, and Williams (not to mention Trybanski), there he was never going to get any time in Phoenix.

I see no downside to this trade. He sounds like a Bo Outlaw type of player for less money. The Suns played pretty well tonight. When Amare and Z return they may as well just cut Gugliotta. With a shortage of big players it appears he is pretty well done as he is getting no playing time
