Its a head coaching job, no one would come down on a team for not keeping an assistant from taking a HC job somewhere else.
Some would argue that Gentry should have been fired and Turner get promoted.

Not saying I agree with that, but I bet there are people who would say that.

Here are the terms of the Memphis pick owned by Minnesota that we are rumored to be receiving. Source: RealGM

What a bunch of crap. So basically, we are guaranteed that the pick we receive will be worse than our standard #13 pick, could end up being a second rounder if we are still waiting for it in 2016.

No one is going to give up an unprotected pick for a few million in cap space.

Its a good deal, we lost a guy that we wouldnt have kept at that rate anyway. A flyer on Johnson and a 1st that will probably be between 19-25th for basically nothing.

By stockpiling #1 picks, it may help us to move up in the draft or in a trade.

We'll have three picks in next year's draft. Something like #13, #23, and #30.

Not sure how that helps move up. We really need a top 5 pick. Here is hoping Memphis is an 8 seed next year.

13? are you assuming that's where the Suns will pick? I think they'll be higher in the lotto than that. probably somewhere in the 6-8 range.

I knew that people would start talking soon about packaging low picks to move up. It is often speculated about, and you see cases of two seconds for a late first, or a second and a future first for a late first, but no one ever moves up to the lottery by combining non-lottery picks. It's just not going to happen.

Even so, having six first-round picks over the next three drafts will be a good thing, especially since the Suns' own picks figure to be in the lottery at least two of those three summers.

True but it allows the Suns to make a sweet trade offer for a player if their own pick is not a top 5 pick.

I agree. I don't think we will be the worst team in the league, but we will be pretty close. In the West, Houston, and Sacramento may be worse, and in the East you have Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Charlotte, and Washington that may or may not all be worse than phoenix. If Orlando trades Dwight, they might crash as well. 6-8 pick sounds about right.

I don't see how they get a top five pick, but there is no chance in hell they don't get 6-8.

However, draft picks are often the NBA currency that facilitates trades to happen. Unless the Suns get an early pick this may be the direction to go.

I wasnt saying we combine the 21st pick and the 30th pick and get 10th... more like 21st, 30th and up to 16th. Or something like Dudley and the 21st pick for the 8th-10th pick...

Who knows, its all speculation right now, and projecting next years draft talent and order is a murky proposition. All I am saying is that having more picks opens up more opportunities.

Neither of those will happen. Find the last time that a team moved up five spots by including a pick at the end of the first round, or moved up more than ten spots by packaging a middle-aged role-playing swingman.

Portland ended up with the 6th pick for Gerald Wallace... a to be free agent.

Granted Billy King's stupidity knows no bounds... but still. The point stands, having more picks provides a lot of utility in trades.

I don't think Eric was disputing the fact that having more picks provides more flexibility and opportunities with trades. I don't think anyone disputes that. I think Eric was just pointing out that "combine draft picks to get a top five is not likely to happen.

Well, I think I made it clear I dont expect that either.

If we get a top 5 pick it will be by our own merit... or lack thereof. The more I ponder our roster the more I can envision us finishing in the bottom 5.

I hope you are right, but I don't see it. Too many terrible teams out there, especially in the East.

In a van...down by the river.
The Suns could package say...their #8 pick(hypothetically) with another lower 1st rd pick to move up into the top 5 if there's a player they've got to have. They WILL have options.

Its good to see that the Suns will at least have options, rather than no future and no options.

Hopefully they get lucky in the next few years with one or two of these picks.

Hold the phone.

Minnesota will still need to unload Johnson in order to sign all their committed contracts. Suns could always rescind Lopez's QO and still take on Johnson I believe, the Wolves would just be missing out on 2nd round pick(s) the Hornets were supposed to send.

Minnesota has to get those, its all they are receiving in the trade.

Suns could easily send a heavily protected 2nd that Minnesota never sees.

I guess, but why not just let New Orleans send them? And really, I dont think 2nd round picks are worth the hassle of putting heavy protections on. They're just fodder in a trade like this.

#13 (Richard Jefferson), #18 (Jason Collins), #23 (Brandon Armstrong) for #7 (Eddie Griffin)

#16 (Troy Bell), #20 (Dahntay Jones) for #13 (Marcus Banks), #27 (Kendrick Perkins)

The players exchanged in those trades negate any point you are trying to prove. :D
