Colt has a noodle arm? I mean.... Who knew?

Oh yeah... EVERYBODY for years knew that. This move should have been done months ago.
Yeah, if the FO and coaches had to see Colt up close to decide that he is no longer anything other than a mentor, they weren't really paying attention to the film from last season.

On a related note, remember 10 months ago when there was a push from some in the media and on the board to bench Murray for McCoy? Good times.

I am usually supportive or neutral. But they bungled this one by not signing him in FA which necessitated the trade. At least he beat out Kellen Mond.

I don't see it that way. They had no idea what the Murray situation would be. They had the draft coming up. They had McCoy in house who they hadn't seen yet. And the Brown's offered Dobbs $2m guaranteed. I can easily understand why they balked at $2m guaranteed in March which very little information to hand.

Now, having more information on Kyler. Having seen McCoy play and assessed where Tune is at they feel they are short and pivoted back.

I agree with the rest of your post, but I will say that Simmons straight line speed made him seem a lot more effective when he was schemed open on blitzes. QB's had no chance of getting rid of the ball.

But there's more to being an NFL caliber player than being able run fast and hit hard. Maybe Wink uses him in 0-6-5 third down packages that Vance liked to pull out. Simmons was pretty effective in those.

If football was played on a track Simmons would be great.

He's a drag car. He's good in a straight line but can't turn for poo. Also LOL at the board now turning the S word into Poo.

No doubt that IS was a major disappointment in Arizona, but he's young enough to figure things out. So it seems like a good deal for the Giants, as they only gave up a seventh round pick. The best part for AZ is that they probably saved some CAP space, though I don't know how much, and removed a distraction from the team. Even to me, as I saw his lack of effort in the KC game.

And then they made it worse by signing him after he had a lousy preseason. Browns kept the guy they wanted and got a pick for Dobbs.

Technically they swapped a late 5th for an early/mid 7th.
I know the picks were swapped but there’s a big difference between those levels. There are going to be Dobbs level players on the street in the next two weeks. I know he knows the system but it doesn’t seem the goal is to maximize the number of wins.

his arm was average when in his prime

he had an arm injury last year in camp, and they were limiting his throws this year in camp

i think his arm -- as average as it was in his prime -- has lost enough due to age or injury that its ineffective

It sounds like they did. Kyle Odegard stated a couple times that they wanted to sign Jacoby Brissett, but he didn't want to sign with them. Now the news that they wanted to sign Dobbs earlier but couldn't get the money right (despite a boat load of cap space). Somers has also said they tried to shop in the free agent market but were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign better players.

If the Texans are decent next year and the Cards win a couple of try-hard games at the end of the season to knock them out of a top 3 pick, this offseason is going to look like a nightmare.
What this story tells me is the new front office is still learning and stubbing their toe now and again. They misjudged their target’s value and now have to pay the amount in salary they didn’t want to pay and throw in a draft pick to get him. Feels like the tampering error. Two errors have now cost us draft capital. Huge capital? No. But unnecessary spends nonetheless. That’s my takeaway from this trade.

ill add:

not that Trey Lance is some prize right now -- if you cant work in the Shanahan system, im not sure what system will work for you

but SF getting a 4th for Lance sure makes a 5th to 7th pick swap seem rich for Dobbs
Even when he was starting and winning a couple of games in 2021 he had the weakest arm of any starting QB in the NFL.

Lance was what? The third overall pick? Not exactly apples to apples here.

Let’s spin comments, Monti is allowed! He is the GM and listening to his offensive coordinator, who hopefully knows a lil sumptan about the abilities of the players. Whether Dobbs is better then all we have now or not. (Probably) They believe he is worth the flyer. If we get a quality back up at the most difficult position to fill in sports for thus amount, yea baby. Look at what we gave for Kolb, Rosen,
give Mount Monty a chance to make some magic.

like marrying an ugly woman, if she leaves, you ain’t out much.
Until Murray returns, what makes you think that Dobbs is a backup? He already knows the Petzing offense, so there’s no guarantee that he isn’t the starter against Washington in the opener.

Never forget that it’s a Bidwill that has final say. Jesus Christ could be our joint GM/HC and I’d still be more concerned that a Bidwill will somehow, some way screw it all up.
While the Bowtie was cheap I think Mikey just makes mistakes - Monti's trying to help get us out from under those mistakes

Dobbs is not just a younger version of Colt, he's a more athletic version. And I'm not saying he's better than Colt, just different. We now have three athletic QB's (Kyler, Tune and Dobbs), so that should make for easier game plans, that won't need an overhaul once Kyler returns. JMO.
Trust me. He’s better than McCoy. McCoy was average when he was healthy. I think his arm is beyond TOAST right now. And Dobbs is eons more elusive than McCoy’s.

It will be interesting when Kyler comes back. Who goes?

Tune is a promising rookie who could be long term backup with starter potential.

Dobbs just cost you a 5th round pick.

And McCoy is a long term vet who's likely to retire after this year and saves you no money. It would be super harsh to cut him.
McCoy will graciously step away. He’s toast, but he is professional.

Slightly upset at the Jones trade.

Really upset about the Dobbs trade.

Happy about the Simmons trade.
Other than the fact that we should have just signed him as a FA, you should not be upset about the Dobbs trade. Whether they admit to or not, McCoy’s arm is toast & Tune’s footwork isn’t ready for an NFL regular season start. Dobbs is familiar with Pelzing’s offense, and MO is familiar with him also. And Dobb’s has the mobility that is a prerequisite in Pelzing’s offense.

Well half a million less, because his signing bonus was paid by Cleveland.

Don’t know, could start. Could be better than colt or Tune. If he is the best QB , roll with the punches. Like we have a a better choice. Hell we sent out our punter Tom Tupa at SDS, ain’t scared of fan adversity.
