I've never liked how we match up with the Niners system, but we seem to be on a revenge vendetta for what happened at the end of last season. Let's hope we stomp the crap out of them!!!!!

If Vance gets the defensive game plan right I think we should win comfortably. Instead of a nickel DB I'd have 3 linebackers on the field, use Simmons versatility. Similar to what we did vs the Titans and Vikings.

Kittle has sat out 2 days as had Trent Williams. They have injuries at DB. Jimmy G out obviously. They aren't in good shape. It would be a poor loss to lay an egg at home against a team this beat up.

Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo wants to “give it a go” at Friday’s practice

Jimmy Garoppolo hasn’t practiced this week, but the quarterback and the 49ers haven’t ruled him out. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo wants to test his strained right calf in practice Friday to see if he can play against the Cardinals on Sunday.

“Jimmy told me he wants to give it a go tomorrow, so we’ll see him out on the practice field tomorrow,” Shanahan said on KNBR, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “If he looks good, then he’ll have a shot. If he can’t, then we’ll shut him down.”

Shanahan said Garoppolo will start the game if he can show he’s healthy enough to push off his back leg.

“Jimmy, it’s more just his health,” Shanahan said on his radio show. “If he feels good enough to where he can protect himself, [if] he feels confident to step into all his throws. Jimmy’s been here long enough, and he’s not a guy who’s just sitting here and rehabbing all week and checked out. He’s a guy who, besides the practice field, you would think he was starting.

“I mean, the meetings, the questions he asks, he’s on top of the whole game plan and everything. And he’s been through it enough to where it’s not that he has to do that stuff. The main thing is, the fact that he wants to give it a go means he’s feeling better, but you never really know until he goes out there and does a full dropback, has to react, and really step into some throws. And that’s what you want to see from him.”

Rookie Trey Lance will make his first career start if Garoppolo can’t play.

The only player Shanahan ruled out for Sunday is cornerback K'Waun Williams (calf).

Physically, Murray and Lance are dissimilar, even if they’re potent playmakers with their legs, arms — and heads, as they mentally adjust to the NFL’s schemes and speed.

Murray, 24, is 5-foot-10, 207 pounds. “Kyler is really natural when it comes to throwing the ball and running around,” Sherfield said.

Lance, 21, is 6-4, 224. “Trey, he’s a bigger body. But Trey can move, he isn’t slow. Trey legitimately has 4.4 speed,” Sherfield said. “That’s what a lot of people don’t know. He can make you miss in space. We talk about lateral quickness. I’ve seen it.”

Lance is surrounded by no shortage of mentors, beyond Shanahan, offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and pass-game coordinator Bobby Slowick. Garoppolo and Nate Sudfeld have also been key tutors, Sherfield testified.

“I try to be as ready as possible, prepare that way during the week,” Lance said said. “So I obviously felt confidence in myself and my teammates.”

Murray’s backups in 2019-20: Brett Hundley and Chris Streveler. This year: Streveler and Colt McCoy.

“Kyler really didn’t have an older guy behind him to help him navigate,” Sherfield said. “Kyler and Trey are two totally different players.”

Murray’s strides as a starting quarterback (5-10-1 in 2019; 8-8 in 2020; 4-0 this year) have the 49ers on high alert after losing to Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Seattle’s Russell Wilson. Murray is 1-3 against the 49ers.

“One of the quickest, fastest quarterbacks I’ve ever seen,” Ryans said of Murray. “Very talented guy, and they surrounded him with a lot of playmakers, which makes it a very difficult offense to defend.”

Hmm really does make you wonder how much having Colt has helped Kyler this year (outside of just experience for Kyler obviously).

The Jimmy G thing is weird to me if he gets much reps today and doesn't start all they're doing is taking reps away from Lance. If he does start after sitting all week it tells you how unsure they are Lance is ready which again is odd. I watched a replay of his 2nd half he's certainly not pretty but he was much better than I expected. He could have easily had 2-3 picks but he didn't and he made some really nice plays. You can design plays and schemes, now if they get behind and he has to throw often he'd be in trouble I expect but it would be a real disappointment to his development if Jimmy G can do 1 or 2 partial practices and get the start IMO.

Interesting, thanks for posting.

That commentary mentioned our backup QBs, specifically Colt Mccoy. I just want to throw out there that during this year's preseason game against DAL, I heard the DAL announcers talking about how having Colt as a back up for Murray was kind of a big deal, because Colt was someone that Murray could really identify with. It had something to do with Colt's long history and success with Texas football (including high school football I guess, maybe Buckybird can verify).

The announcers thought Colt was someone Murray would respect and listen too because they were from the "same neck of the woods" (so to speak).

Anyway, I just thought that made sense, and that maybe McCoy has some value as back-up beyond what he brings in terms of on-the-field performance.

They looked even more beat up coming into a must win game in week 16 last year and we crapped the bed. Can’t let that happen again.

I thought Lance mostly looked horrible. All of Lance's plays are parsed out on YouTube. I thought he struggled to complete simple NFL passes. Reminded me a lot of how Josh McCown looked in his early starts.

But to be honest, I think Shanahans handling of this situation isn't very good.

Sure the Niners can rebound, but the way Jimmy has played so far, this is the perfect opportunity to start Lance and give him live game reps.

I'd watched the Youtube already but I watched the 2nd half on tape and he looked better than I expected. I get what you mean better athlete than player right now I'm not saying he SHOULD start. I'm just saying unless they're sure Jimmy is going to be ready they should give all the reps to Lance, he needs them, and frankly if they execute the gameplan and he doesn't turn it over they could stay in the game with Lance. If we got a ahead I think Lance would really struggle if he HAS to throw(or scramble) i think his lack of experience will be a huge problem. But if they can put him in that Shanahan scripted offense with a run game and limit what he has to do throwing the ball I think he could be ok.

But if they split work today and tomorrow and then start Lance I think they're going to pay for it.

He's actually played fairly well. I'm not a big fan of his but given the Aiyuk situation, Kittle being hurt and the RB's all being hurt 66% 230 yards per game and only 2 picks isn't all that bad. The problem is he has a very low ceiling. Lance has a very high ceiling but also a pretty low floor because he's so inexperienced.

Remember a few years ago when Colin K started against us and we had I think 2 pick sixes in a blowout win? This game COULD go that way with Lance if we get ahead and he HAS to throw. But it could also go like last years game where they knocked us out if he runs the gameplan and their defense doesn't get overwhelmed. They have secondary injuries and issues we SHOULD be able to move the ball on them.

I just think it's weird Jimmy is going to practice today unless he starts all they did was take reps away from a guy who needs them

Trey Lance ceiling is 4.4 Josh Allen.

Just a question of whether he makes that leap like Josh. People forget how horrible Josh was throwing the football most of his 1st year and quite a bit of his 2nd year.

We'll see if Shanahan can really develop QBs like Daboll or not.

True, this is a much better team than that one though. Plus that was during the "Kyler is injured" period.

Of course, you can't take any game lightly but if we play like we have been this should be relatively straightforward.
