True, this is a much better team than that one though. Plus that was during the "Kyler is injured" period.

Of course, you can't take any game lightly but if we play like we have been this should be relatively straightforward.

Agreed that We are a much better team this year. They just can’t start believing the hype. There’s a wounded animal coming into town this weekend. Gotta pound it into the ground.

“If he wants to get out of the pocket, he’s going to get out of the pocket whether he retreats back 10 yards,” he told reporters Thursday. “I think guys throw that out, where keeping him in the pocket. Well, this guy’s elusive enough. He’s probably the fastest guy on the field. So, if he wants to get out, he’s going to get out.”

We see that regularly. Even when he is not pressured, he moves to create time, to allow routes to develop down the field and also perhaps to increase his field vision.

Ryan noted Murray isn’t moving to try and run this season. But that is where a slight change in the offensive game plan could lead to big rushing numbers from Murray.

“When you see quarterbacks break out of the pocket, your natural reaction is the guys running with the ball, so I have to go up and get him,” Ryans explained. “But you have to understand, with Kyler, what’s been our main focus all week is talking about plastering and coverage because he’s not escaping to run per se. He’s escaping to hit the big explosive play, so our guys have to be disciplined, stay back in coverage and we’ll come up after he crosses the line of scrimmage.”

I still believe this is a game where Kyler is going to have run quite a bit

He's actually played fairly well. I'm not a big fan of his but given the Aiyuk situation, Kittle being hurt and the RB's all being hurt 66% 230 yards per game and only 2 picks isn't all that bad. The problem is he has a very low ceiling. Lance has a very high ceiling but also a pretty low floor because he's so inexperienced.

Remember a few years ago when Colin K started against us and we had I think 2 pick sixes in a blowout win? This game COULD go that way with Lance if we get ahead and he HAS to throw. But it could also go like last years game where they knocked us out if he runs the gameplan and their defense doesn't get overwhelmed. They have secondary injuries and issues we SHOULD be able to move the ball on them.

I just think it's weird Jimmy is going to practice today unless he starts all they did was take reps away from a guy who needs them
Jimmy is playing well, but he isn't pushing the football. He can win you games if everything else is going well, but the Niners are clearly not a very dominant team right now.

I think this is a hole the Niners have dug themselves into by going with an older QB and not a young franchise guy. If I'm taking over a team as a GM, my first priority is getting a young talented, rookie contract guy and taking the lumps early. It's part of the reason why I think the Rams are making a mistake with Stafford. He'll want another huge contract and he can't really grow into the position and get leaps better.

What I saw of Lance was a guy who shouldn't see an NFL field at all in the near term, but I'm a believer that young guys especially ones with less experience need to play immediately. Jimmy isn't going to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory. They moved up to draft a very raw kid with great tools, but he's probably a few years away from being a real complete player.

Personally I love what the Niners are doing because I think they are running in place and their potential franchise savior looks like butts right now.

Oh I agree with the argument they would probably be better served to play Lance, get a higher draft pick and move on. i think the problem is they have too many guys on the team like Bosa, Kittle etc who would be very mad if they basically went for the draft pick. They were in a SB not that long ago, they came into this year looking like a contender but all the injuries have again hurt them.

If they go to Lance now and he's not ready, and I don't think he is, just watch how quickly Bosa and Kittle and others are injured. They're hurt now they're just playing through it but if they see a rookie QB who's not ready they will quickly start sitting out games. And that's not a criticism just reality of the game they won't risk their futures to play with a QB who's simply not ready to get them there IMO.

They're in a tough situation too many guys fully expected to be a playoff team this year it's why this game is so big for them IMO if they win they can still see themselves as a playoff team if they lose I don't think they can. That I assume is why Jimmy is practicing today Shanahan realizes if they don't win today with Colts, Bears, Cards and Rams in their next 4 after us, they could realistically be 3-6 after 9 games.

I'd probably do this in Madden tbh. Except I'd just have Budda cover the slot.

I would play Simmons at corner. Seriously.

I think he is better than some dude we have on the practice squad right now.

Marco Wilson is also a game day decision.

I think Wilson will play. He and Alford will play outside. I assume they will play 3 LBs more than use a slot corner, which was probably going to happen anyway if Kittle plays.

And if we need another CB on 3rd and long Hamilton, Thompson or Budda can play slot.

That's still better than the 49ers put out last week with Johnson, Moseley and Kirkpatrick.

Might mean we get to see more Zaven.

The concern is Hamilton came up limping last week too. He recovered at least.

Seems like half the NFL is short on CB's and they keep getting hurt.

Maybe we can convert Isabella!

With NDSU’s season being cancelled last year Lance hasn’t started a game in nearly 20 months. Shanahan knows he’s not ready and nobody really knows at the time of the trade-up if their intention was to draft him. I think Shanahan is better than his record suggests but there’s some weirdness going on with HC/GM dynamic, injuries and personal decisions (Aiyuk is healthy and not playing)?

All the other teams on this list went to the Superbowl. No pressure then.

xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media
Everyone of that team expect us till now, went to the SB, very interesting. 3 of 4 lost it, Brady twice to Giants and Manning to Seattle and the LOB, Raiders won. I hope we do as good or hopefully better as 3 of them.

Back to reality, I hope we play well, start prepared, no injuries and good play from all 3 phases. The 49ers can be a problem, they will play us hard and we have to put them away else they will try to come back.

I think Shanahan is a really great playcaller, but he’s awful at evaluating & managing offensive talent. Lord knows he needs Trey to hit more than anybody.

I’ve been thinking the same. Every now and again mix in a big game running to remind defenses of what could come your way. The more doubt you can create in defenders’ minds the more they hesitate. That additional half second could mean all the difference in winning a game.

Thinking more about it we kinda lucked out that we're playing rookie Trey Lance, injured shoulder Baker Mayfield and either Davis Mills or fresh off a hamstring pull Tyrod Taylor.

Just need the offense to continue rolling/protect the football and get more of a pass rush.

They swore up and down all offseason that Trent Sherfield was going to be great and that he was underutilized by the Cardinals. :biglaugh:

It’s Baker’s left shoulder and they’ll be ready coming off a loss to the Chargers. I’d happily take 2-1 over the next three.
