This is a smear. People were asking why he couldn't get time instead of/alongside an obviously washed Zach Ertz. These questions were asked until October when he started playing.
Use the search function for Ertz washed - the results are pretty hilarious.

Not an intentional smear...just calling out a rush to judgment.

The same negative talk about McBride early in his rookie season is real (its well documented if you don't remember) - just comparing it to Benson.

I won't go back and pull all the posts but if it wasn't real...why would there be a thread about it?

Because the same hair-trigger accusers were doing a victory lap and pointing the finger at no one? For some posters, I guess either you're a pro bowler or you're a bust. This isn't even a thread where people are calling McBride a bust. Hilarious.

Oh! Am I supposed to create threads titled "Tell Me Again About How Josh Jones is Not a Bust"?

You guys are too smart to not understand my original post (early McBride rookie season snap judgements vs Benson).
Yes, but it is ok to question why a 2nd round pick isn't getting snaps over a dusty vet. That doesn't mean he is a bust, just that it is disappointing he can't grab snaps from a bad player. It's the same for Max Melton and (to a degree) Trey Benson. Melton isn't increasing his snaps behind a very mid at best STV. Benson isn't increasing his snap share behind slow James Conner and pass pro Demercado. Those are concerns but doesn't mean those players are busts (yet).

Especially with the context that we're drafting older guys that should be more ready to contribute early vs. young higher potential/bust prospects.

I mean, most of what I said in the thread you bumped in January to try and raise this same concern about BJ Ojulari remains true: it's foolish to expect early production from a tight end. Tight ends historically take time to develop, even the real good ones. McBride was and is well ahead of the historical developmental timeline for the position.

That said, this is NOT the care for RBs. Here are some successful 3rd round-or-later RBs of recent vintage and how they performed in the first three games of their rookie campaigns:

Alvin Kamara - 10 attempts, 58 yards, 1 TD, 10 receptions 76 yards.
Kyren Williams - 1 special teams snap, 2 DNPs
Rhamondre Stevenson - 1 att, 2 yards, 1 reception, 9 yards, 2 healthy inactives.
James Conner - 5 att, 20 yards, 12 offensive snaps
Brian Robinson - 3 DNPs
De'Von Achane - 19 rushes, 208 yards, 4 TDs, 1 healthy inactive
Aaron Jones - one healthy inactive and 20 special teams snaps
Devin Singletary - 10 rushes, 127 yards, 1 TD, 1 healthy inactive

So, maybe it's okay he's where he is. It's a long season. I'm just commenting on why and how people are so enthusiastic about this guy who seemed pretty mid to me.

It's so early tho...3 games.

McBride had one good game his entire rookie season (week 16) and he turned out ok.

7 of his first 8 games he had zero catches.

I am just looking at snaps for these guys. Is their snap share increasing, decreasing, or staying the same? What is the quality or experience of the person who is blocking them from a larger role?

Let's use Benson as an example. We know the team probably wants to cap Conner's rush volume. We know Demercado is a limited player but good in pass pro. We know Benson is a size/speed athlete at RB. What have we seen so far? Benson has not been good enough to increase his snap share behind Conner in a running back role, nor has he shown enough to take snaps away from Demercado in a 3rd down role. Game 3 or not, it is disappointing. Doesn't mean it can't change. Just means I was hoping for more from the 2nd RB taken in the draft.

Once Benson breaks a 15-20 yard run, people will be on here saying how he should get more carries and Connor is washed.

But the 2nd RB taken wasn’t taken to be a feature back. He was taken in a backup role to spell a bell cow RB and take over for him next year.

To me, this angst over Benson is completely unfounded.

I liked the Benson pick but don't like seeing him always run to the outside instead of straight ahead. He looks like he is panicking, maybe the holes just aren't there for him.
K-9 is right that some rookie RBs come in and perform right away others do take some time. It's a long season and he will get more carries, hope he beaks some long runs.
He does have the size and speed.

Oh sure rub it in with Achane.

The only thing keeping me off the ledge on that pick is he continues to get dinged up.

But man is he good

First 14 NFL games 146 carries 950 yards 6.5 YPC, 9 TD's 1 fumble. 44 catches 370 yards 4 TD's. He's missed 6 games so that's a real thing but man is he good. Curious to see how he does the full year if Tua is out all year, if you watch them play now teams are just keying on the run game not fearing the QB.

I hope the fumble doesn't scare us off of playing him more. Garbage time and all but he at least showed some burst. Conner had a nice game but we can't run him into the ground.

But Benson has to show it in a game that's close. His first carry today was good.

Mentioned in the game thread this was my one big concern from this game. I don't think Benson played a single snap. Conner was a beast so I get that but after last game I was hoping he earned a bit of trust and got a few plays but he clearly didn't. My concern is the fumble scared them.

I know the obvious is DeMercado is a really good 3rd down RB so I get that but very concerned that what I hoped was a step forward last week may actually have been a step back?

I could be wrong but I don't think MeMarcado was in the game very much. Given how Conner performs, I can understand that. That man is a beast.

He wasn't just the 3rd down throws.

I guess maybe the best way to put my thought. If I had woken up this morning and the report said Conner won't play today, I would have assumed Benson would be the #1RB. Right now if you said Conner won't play next week, I have no idea who would be the RB, we might even activate Carter off the practice squad?
