precisely. it's why i wouldn't be angered if we traded amare for mid-round draft picks IF we traded nash for something as well. 'cuz then we'd stink in 2011 and we could hopefully get that stud to pair with all our young role players. likely even stink again in 2012 to get the second stud. how else do you get the roys, durants, duncans, shaqs, olajawon's?

With the Suns luck it would be one of those stinker draft classes where Armon Gilliam is the second best player.

All I'm sayin is he knew exactly what he was doing. That's why they had the whole transition period etc... He got the number he wanted and moved on.

kinda hard to fault him for that. he stewarded the team from some rocky times (almost bankruptcy and the drug scandal years) and provided phx with some of the most exciting years we can remember. and he always seemed to be TRYING to win a championship (even when his moves turned out to be blunders he seemed to be trying). once he had to get out financially he had to take the best offer (not only for himself, but remember, he had shareholders to which he was legally beholden). so i don't blame him for grabbing the cash. i think he had to. would it have been nice to see the team fall into the lap of a great owner? absolutely! do i think jerry would have preferred that? yes. do i think he shakes his head at what the suns have become? again, yeah, i think he does. i think he likely thinks it's sad.

You can't rebuild with no blue-chip young talent and no immediate prospects for acquiring blue-chip young talent. This is what most of this board doesn't understand. Everyone talks about the Thunder, but they got Green at #5, Durant at #2, and Westbrook at #4. Look at other successful rebuilds and you'll see the same thing: Portland got Aldridge at #2 (in a trade when they held the #4 pick), Roy at #6 (in a trade with #7), and of course Oden at #1. Chicago, same story.

The Suns have two players on their roster under the age of 30 (!!!) who were taken in the top ten of the draft. Those players are Amar'e Stoudemire and Jason Richardson, the same guys fans want to get rid of. Everyone else on the roster who is even remotely "young" was taken in the teens or later.

Trading Stoudemire for a "top-ten draft" talent or two would have been great, but those offers weren't out there. So the earliest that the Suns could possibly have even a SINGLE top-ten talent is the summer of 2011, and that's only if they really suck next year.

You can't rebuild around poor talent. It just won't work.

I do see your point and do agree for the most part. However, the Suns could obtain top 10 draft picks by "blowing it up" and going through 2-3 lottery seasons. Additionally, I'm sure Nash could still provide you with a mid level draft pick or two. (Maybe you could use it/them to move up a few spots, get additional picks, etc.)

The Suns aren't completely handcuffed. But I do agree they've put themselves in an pretty tough situation with all of these lateral moves. I probably should not have used OKC as an example. I was mainly referring to them as a team that did it right, IMO.

Are the suns in the clear as far as owing other teams draft picks after this season? I think they are?

Maybe a deal gets done with the Suns now. Think about it, no way Amar'e re-signs with us BEFORE the trade deadline. With a cap friendly contract, the demand for Amar'e goes up, not down. The Suns would have had more leverage in a trade. The big sticking point was getting Amar'e signed to a new club. Without a contract, Amar'e had some say in where he went. With a new contract, he would have gone wherever the Suns sent him. If the Suns look around and see they aren't getting Wade or Lebron. Heck, they probably couldn't even get Bosh. The best option would be to sign Amar'e this off season. If they don't you know the Suns are looking to blow the Suns up. Without good draft picks, or a lot of cap and luxury tax room, the Suns may be better off giving Amar'e a little more money and renting him for as long as Nash is here.
