My point has always been that if we don't want Rolle, then we should have cut him at the start of the offseason. End of story. If he doesn't want to renegotiate his potentially 12 million contract now, since we didn't care enough to renegotiate it last season, then cut him. Don't look like even bigger idiots by half-assing negotiations now. Make a decision and move on.

I just fail to see how the Cardinals could let this deal get to this point if they actually wanted to keep Rolle around. And, if Graves did, then he is even more inept than I thought.

 Right on, Chopper. Right on.

Yes Rolle wants to get paid, but I am sure that the bonus he is due is a roster bonus. How hard is it to hit that? So in essence either our front office didn't foresee that Rolle would be on our roster this year, or they are too inept to restructure a deal at around 5 million per year. All we did was take away our bargaining leverage with Rolle, allow him access into a very thin free agent market, and potentially open up another hole that we have to fill via the draft. I don't care who you are, this is bad business.

If you don't want Rolle, just cut him and don't let it get to the deadline. If you wanted to keep him, we should have been working on this deal for months now, not weeks. Presently, we just look stupid and inept.

Yes he wants to get paid the 12.1M this season. He's the one who didn't want to reneg. IMO. Then if they drop him like a sack of potatoes then he still gets paid playing for his hometown Dolphins. Either way HE, not the FO is in the drivers seat. He's in the exact position he wants to be.

Kind of like the way he plays Saftey too, not necessarily where he should be.;)

The contract was structured for a potential All-Pro CB. Not a decent FS.

I think Rashad Johnson not even showing a glimmer of hope on the field or in practice really bit them in the butt. I have a sneaking position that they thought they were going to pull off another Campbell for Antonio Smith trade off. Meaning they fully intended on lossing Rolle this year. Rashad Johnson crapped the bed and here we are.
Exactly!

The problem is they're working on a two-year plan, when it really needs to be at least a three year plan...

What I mean is, they were very lucky that Campbell adapted to the NFL as quickly as he did and could replace, even surpass Smith in Campbell's second season. Not that the potential wasn't there but that in Campbell's case it developed so quickly.

I haven't given up hope that Rashad Johnson might become a good FS in the NFL. But it's painfully obvious that he needed more than one season to make that transition.

Because there's no salary cap, it doesn't matter. Give him a $11.5 m bonus and have him play for the veteran minimum this year, $2.5 y2, $3.5 y3, $3.7 y4, $4 y5.

That ends up 5 years, $25.7 million, say you guarantee the first 2 years of the deal, which is $15 million guaranteed. Everyone walks away happy.
At first look I thought a contract like this might get it done.

But if Rolle signed this type of deal the Cardinals would once again be dealing with a player that cashed in on the guaranteed money, and after two seasons on a five year deal is grumbling that his contract needs redone. Especially considering his agent... :bang:

I don't know. Those are pretty solid salaries for a guy who isn't Top 5 at his position. I'd be hard pressed to say that Rolle was even Top 10. It's not even that big of a pay cut that he'd be taking, since last year his salary was just over $3.5 million.

I think you are right on target, jack! That would be a good deal for both sides, as you stated, "everyone walks away happy".

If it weren't for Rosenhaus...

Players want long term security, which is what I meant when I said that Rolle wanted to be paid. I am sure that he was expecting us to renegotiate a long-term deal last year since that is how his contract was set up. When Graves chose not to, the Cardinals gave Rolle all the negotiating power. Now, because we failed to commit to him last year, we are on the hook for 12 million or he becomes a free agent and will get bonus dollars. Sounds pretty fair to me, especially in a down economy with a potential strike looming.

Remember, the Cardinals are the ones who look stupid here, not Rolle.

agreed. in today's nfl. if you're gonna take the steelers approach of replacing from within rather than breaking the bank retaining your mid-level FA's, it needs to be considered, decided, and acted upon 3 years in advance. very few players come in and show enough in a rookie season to allow a team to feel comfortable allowing a vet to leave and replace him with a 2nd year player. a player with 2 years under his belt is much more analyzable.

Not really. If you are taking the Steelers model for example, you need to stop selecting in the bottom half of the draft. The way that rookie scale contracts are for the 1st 15 picks is loaded with these escalators that we are seeing. When you constantly draft in the 20's like Pittsburgh has been doing, you don't see these types of issues because the escalators in the contracts are they ones that they created by resigning their own free agents. The ones that are there on players in their rookie contracts are very tiny when compared to the top half of the draft.

No it's not reaching because all Graves was was a guy with an economics degree from Texas Tech University. No football background whatsoever other than that his father was in the business. Other than knowing the Tobin's what made Rod qualified to be a pro scout?

What difference does it make. Are you just going to refuse to look at the results because he didn't have a football background? That's silly. Look at what the man has accomplished.

We have results from RG's efforts. Let's look at them and decide what has been accomplished.

What is it with people wanting to re-negotiate contrats with 2 years left on them? Especially for an average player who had an average year in 2008.

The contract was set up to re-negotiate this year and that is what the team is in the process of doing. If Rolle feels he can get more money elsewhere, more power to him. We don't have to overpay for people like we used to have to do to get players to come here. If he leaves, we'll find someone else. How often have the Patriots lost top people and not even missed a step?

The fans need to stop thinking like they did 4 or 5 years ago. We aren't the same team and our priorities have changed. No one member of this team is indispenseable.

40 this isn't the P&R board so you don't need to conjure up a different meaning to the post you are responding to.

Follow the linear progression of the debate. Graves results without coming from a football background go more toward proving my point than yours.

He was raised in a football environment, and decided to pursue this vocation in later life. He has a practical resumé in the business built over decades.

One can watch all the football one can, read every publication, and subscribe to all the analysis, and never, ever, have the practical knowledge to do his job.

It's the difference between reading a book and writing a book.

Because we negotiated a stupid contract! You state that this contract was set up to renegotiate this year which is wrong. This contract was set up to renegotiate BEFORE this year. If you want to keep a young player you don't negotiate with the options of a)get paid 12 million OR b)test free agency where, as average as you may be, you are one of the top 10 free agents. These options don't keep that young player on your team. This renegotiation has nothing to do with Rolle and everything to do with Graves.

So we get down to the crux of the matter. You don't believe Graves has done a good job and I do. I'd say there is a lot more evidence to support my position than yours. The results speak for themselves.

Again, if you are drafting his replacement (Rashad Johnson) but his replacement doesn't work out, then you're in trouble. If you draft Antonio Smith's replacement (Calais Campbell) and it does work out, then you are a genius. He did the same thing with Calvin Pace, and he gets an Incomplete as Cody Brown was hurt all year.

I insist that he made the right move with Rolle.

In 2008, Rolle was underwhelming. One interception returned for a TD was his highlight of the year. No other interceptions and very few game changing plays. Why would you want to re-negotiate his contract?

You are using hind sight to form your opinion. It might look like a bad deal to you now after the fact, but back in the early part of 2009, no one was clamoring to re-do his contract and he hadn't done anything to earn it. He has a good year and now you are blaming the front office for not being clairvoyant and re-doing his contract when he could have been had for cheap (at least in your estimation).

...and I am fine with the Cardinals releasing him if they don't think he is worth keeping long term. My problem is that they are looking like idiots by trying to get it done now. They rolled the dice on R Johnson apparently and lost. Cut bait and move on.

So you are OK with what he tried to do but since it didn't work out he is an idiot for trying to correct it?

No, I am blaming the front office for looking like idiots by trying to broker a deal now when they have no negotiating leverage. They rolled the dice on Rashad Johnson and he didn't develop. Don't try and say that you want Rolle now, because your replacement plan fell on it's face.

The problem is that at this point it can't be corrected. The Cardinals have no negotiating leverage. They pay him 12 million for the year, or they cut him and he tests free agency. Those are the two options for the Cardinals and Antrel Rolle. The Cardinals are stupid for putting on this weak front that they wanted Rolle this whole time. Make an offer at the beginning of the offseason and if he declines it, cut him, let him test free agency, and if we resign him great, if not, oh well.
