Coleman had 5 sacks last year in 16 games and Wakefield had 3 sacks in 16 games.
There's more to playing DE than just sack stats - particularly on the left side.

- Like stopping the run.

- Like playing contain again a QB who likes to roll out to his right.

- Like not getting sucked in on wide running plays.

- Like using your hands to push up off a cut blocker in order to get your hands up to block passing lanes.

- Like reading keys properly.

- Like closing on the ball quickly.

In some cases, Marco trumps Wakefield. In other cases, Fred trumps Coleman. Let's not forget one thing, too - Coleman was cut for a reason (not an overarching reason to not sign him, but it does rack up one more check mark in the Wakefield column).

Unless they lose to the Lions...then all hell breaks loose. This is clearly a winnable game.

I would certainly hope that no one would be in any way overjoyed if the Cards lose to Detroit. I agree, it certainly does seem to be a very winnable game.

But to adhere to this line of thinking, to me, is a classic example of the myopia of the negativist. This is the epitome of the mindset of the loser.
To go ballistic over one game or to judge the future on such a day to day, game to game basis is simply the manifestation of one, who due to lack of a clear long term goal focuses so intently on the inevitable hurdles that may appear along the path to that goal that they lose sight of the goal itself and become easily discouraged. Any world class hurdler invariably is the one who focuses not on the hurdles along the way, but the finish line, knowing that ..yes the hurdles are there, but jumping each one is not the goal.....reaching the finish line is.
If all you do is focus your energy on each upcoming hurdle, then it is easy to get discouraged and the view is nothing more than one continuous hurdle after another.

A simple concept indeed, but one that evidently a lot of people are misssing.

That is my whole point. All I know about Coleman is what I read about him and his stats. I'd be willing to bet that most posters here don't know a whole lot more about him, so saying that he is a huge upgrade over Wakefield doesn't carry much weight IMO.

I think that with W. Bryant going through his first training camp and with Calvin Pace at RDE that our D will be improved. I'm willing to wait and see how they perform against a good Detroit O-Line before bringing in other players.

Maybe they will get 4 or 5 sacks and pressure the QB all day and there will be no need to sign another DL. I'm willing to wait and see what happens tomorrow.

The suggestion is that we do not know how to evalute or use DL guys.

If that was the point he was trying to make, he is way off base then. Walker is on record saying that he would have cut himself if he was the Cardinals. He had an awful camp and showed absolutley nothing....correct me if I am wrong he was the player who lost his play book during camp.

pathetic means being so weak that the cards are the object of contempt and or pity. I do not have either for the organization. maybe you do cheesey.

and, yeah, I'm going to call you EVERY time you take a cheap shot at the cards bud. and don't pm either.

No one said you had to think the cards are cheap and pathetic - personally - I don't see it as a cheap shot - I see it as the truth. Have a nice day Crimson.

The Eagles also lost Burgess for the season on Friday (achilles). Yes we're thin at DE but Philly was downright desperate. if Philly was so excited about Marco, why didn't they bring him as soon as he was available? They didn't do that, they signed marco after the Burgess news on Friday.

No offense Tango but you sound a little bit like the "one who shall not be named" Just on the opposite end of the spectrum. I don't mind people questioning what the Cardinals do because nobody is perfect, especially the Cardinals. The last 50 years has proven that. It should be our right as fans to be able to question the Cardinals on some issues and not be called stupid and myopic. It's one thing to be a fan but yet another to be a fan who never questions anything the Cardinals do.

The salary cap rules may've worked against the Cards getting Coleman.

Since Coleman is a "vested" free agent, all the teams that wanted him were waiting until after week one to sign him. Why?

If Coleman is signed before week 1, the team that gets him is responsible for all his salary, irrespective of how many games he is on the roster.

If Coleman were signed after week 1, that team would've been held accoutable only for the weeks he was on the roster.

ok sunfan thats cool. I just don't like when people who are supposed to be fans of the cards come here and just whole heartedly rip the team and the organization. I come to the board for news and debates about issues like signing coleman. not to read cheap shots and one liner insults. if I want that stuff, I can go to any sports media website.

my take on coleman is that being cut from his former team is a huge redflag. apparently he could not beat out "Paul Spicer" (whoever the heck that is) who is listed second on the depth chart at LDE for Jacksonville behind tony brackens.

if coleman cannot beat out Paul Spicer could he possible be that much better than wakefield? I doubt it. Does coleman know our system the way wakefield does? of course he doesn't.

The bottom line is that coleman, because he now sucks, would probably NOT start ahead of wakefield and may not even be better than dennis johnson.

go put that in your pipe and smoke it cheesey.

Coleman was cut mostly for financial reasons.

Jax has monster money tied up in the D-line: Douglas, Stroud, Henderson, and -- this was Coleman's death knell -- Brackens.

He led their team in sacks during the preseason.

I was for getting Coleman but to tell you the truth I think my opinion has changed. I don't think I needed to get ripped on to have it changed though :) I started a poll that asked who would you rather have starting Coleman or Wakefield? I wanted to see how others on this board felt, and I was called stupid by one poster and made another poster want to puke. :( I just think we should be open minded. I don't think the Cardinals will make all the right decisions, no team does so I like to debate moves from time to time. I hope that's ok with most posters. Maybe it's just me but I think if we had signed Coleman some people on this board, like Tango for instance, would have thought it was a great move because it was the Cardinals who made it.

Obviously you seem to be lacking in some comprehension skills to make such a foolish statement.

on my pet peeve of bringing in a tackle...keep in mind that the cardinals wanted both vonnie holliday and thorton from tennessee at tackle. I was under the impression we were going to make an offer to thorton - but cincy gave him a deal when he went there for a visit and he took it...I thought I read that we were going to make him an offer..

my point is: the cardinals at one pointed wanted an end and a tackle. I guess you could say we drafted king and pace to replace holliday and thorton...but they are rookies and will take some time to develop. also..kvb is gone - so in theory we are still short a guy (i.e. pace replaces holliday - no one replaced kvb). we should have had a new in here on the dline..there was talent available.

on wide receiver and corner..I say go with who we have. No players that are very good or who you could count on were out there. I also agree with letting boston go.. but with injuries to bell and kvb we needed someone on the dline. we will probably get a guy next week - but the best ones are gone.

Tango I was asking you why you think I lack comprehension skills. How so was a simplier way of asking that question. Why do you think you rest your case by me asking "how so?"

Actually you completely missed the whole point on my post but that is OK. I was merely making comment about about Cheesebeefs new attitude and how his calm demeanor would change if the Lions won. Guess I should have put ina smiley face.

But now that you have opened this can...

You are right (and if you truly believe I have a one game mentality, then you don't pay attention to me) a hurdler focuses on the finish line. But every race starts with the first step and hurdle. If the hurdler trips over the very first hurdle, he will come limping across the finish line in last place. So while the goal of the finish line is good, if he forgets about the hurdles he is done.

I don't want to finish in last...I want to win games. Personally I could care less about Marco Coleman. Never really a fan of his. It is what he represents to me that is more botehrsome but at this point who cares.

Finally, if the Cards do lose Sunday, you better not come back because everyone will be going nuts. AS good team ( a team I know you want and hope for ) wins the winnable games...and this is a winnable game.

Anyways, like I said, you missed the true intention of my post. A smiley would have helped.

Well, all I have to say is...we screwed the pooch. *Best Dennis Leary voice* Yeah Rod, thanks for calling...how's the 'belly' of your team now?

Everyone on here has been clamoring about how they're confident in Graves, how if he didn't want him he must be washed up, he's too old, etc, blah blah blah *company line* blah blah.

Well, Philly thought he was a decent replacement left end. Let's compare our roster to Philly's. Oh wait, no, that would be an UNfavorable argument as to whether or not Graves screwed this up. Can't have that now, can we.

Face facts, blind Graves supporters. Coleman showed something to a very good team to make them want to sign him. I would wager, since our D-line can't at this point hold a candle to Philly's, that makes him better than Wakefield. I'd say this is fairly logical. Of course, the fact that Wakefield would probably start on NO other NFL roster contributes as well.

But, when the Pats traded for Ted Washington and were lauded by many in the sports world for a great move to bolster their defense, and some question why we couldn't do something like that, we were blasted. Of course, the board 'spin doctors' shall inevitably come down upon me, curse me for a blind negativist, and say everything is peaches and cream.

I reiterate-we screwed the pooch. Damn the blind-faith fools. They can all hang out with the above mentioned GM...

:stupid:

I'm with you.

pinnacle, you may be right that we "so in theory we are still short a guy".

The problem is that the "guy" we need/want isn't available and has not been since then.

nidan...you could be correct - I try to caveat things with 2 statements..1) we cannot be sure whether or not the cardinals contacted certain players agents and were told..no thanks..2) the depth chart that the cardinals keep to evaluate available talent may have shown that guys available graded out below guys we have...not that I agree - but they are the coaches/scouts and are paid to evaluate this stuff..

my problem is that I am not of the opinion that no one graded out as high as thorton from tennessee..who I am under the impression we wanted. his stats are as marginal as anyone..but obviously other factors come into play..if we wanted him..I am sure we could have found a comparable quality player..also..kvb going down changed things..after we drafted pace - I was pretty sure that was the end of us trying to get a defensive end..but..when kvb went down I figured we would get someone.

we will actually probably get someone next week (somewhere on the dline)...unless our defense totally dominates the Lions..then all bets are off..

at the end of the day...you never know how things work out..It looked like a huge blunder that philly jumped up and got mcdougale...the guy we wanted. pretty much a 100% consensus we were outmanuevered by philly.. but as of today..mcdougale is out with an injury and pace is a starter and has looked very good...so now we look not so stupid...but this could change down the road..

Nidan & Wiz:

Here's the exchange, so far:

Garthshort >>As far as Johnson not making it to the PS, wouldn't most teams (maybe all) say if he couldn't make it with the Cards who are DESPERATE for a pass rush, why would we want him.<<

Me >>Two words. Darwin Walker.<<

Wiz >>What the hell does that mean?<<

Nidan >>The suggestion is that we do not know how to evalute or use DL guys.<<

Wiz >>If that was the point he was trying to make, he is way off base then... <<

Fortunately, that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Garth wondered why most teams wouldn't pass on a d-lineman released by the Cards, since we need them so badly, and seemed to imply that Dennis Johnson would go unclaimed if cut. I offered Darwin Walker as an example of that NOT happening. Clearly, it's not as obvious an example as I thought.

In this league, one team's trash is often another team's treasure, for a variety of reasons. I agree with keeping Johnson on the roster, and giving him another season to develop. I don't think he'd clear waivers, if released.

Yeah, it's disappointing that a guy we drafted and then cut went on to start for one of the better defenses in the league, but that wasn't my point. Sorry for the confusion.

I always look for certain posters........and WC is one of them. He writes clearly.......is thought provoking..........is not condesending to others.............and is knowledgable about the REAL issues facing our Cards.

We could all learn how to be more respectful of others from following his poasting style. The bottom line: content should win every time!
