Just read an SI article that suggests we should trade kyler to the giants for the #3 pick....

if we did that, I wonder who would we start at QB this year? Jacobby pass-the-BBQ-sauce Brissett?

and then who are we going to start at QB next year? A draft pick?

I bet JG and and his 6-42 career HC record would be super duper fired up about that plan! :)

According to Murray’s contract, he earned a massive roster bonus just by staying on Arizona’s roster at 4PM ET on Saturday afternoon.

Murray is now guaranteed $32.835 million in 2026 according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This comes from his $22.835 million salary and $10 million of his $17 million roster bonus. For context, Murray is guaranteed $32.6 million during the 2025 season.

Murray is going to be here 2 more seasons more than likely. He has had some really wild "Oh my!!!" moments, the NFL Network just re-played the "Hail Murray" game. But he has also had some really wild 'Oh my!!!" moments, as in "WTF did he just do???!!!". His only consistency is his inconsistency IMO.

I'm reconciled to have to watch his very frustrating QB play for the next 2 years (at least). At this point there really is no better solution to be had. Maybe they can be bad enough to get one in the draft after next season. But I got no hope for that, this being the Cardinals and all.

If the Cards don't make the playoffs and Kyler continues on his current trajectory, I can't imagine Kyler is on the team next season. How in the hell can you roll it back for season 8, knowing what he is?

What's the alternative? Kyler contract is a nightmare of rolling guarantees. Even if you cut him loose, there isn't a clear path to a QB that is Top 8 and not Top 12.

If doing so were easy, Derek Carr wouldn't still have a job.

Only answer I got is "Because it's the Cardinals". I can't imagine MB eating the contract and can't imagine any team taking it on either, based on your beginning scenario. This is what happens when you give the bag 2 years too soon to a player, especially a QB that hasn't proven he's worthy of it.

If it wasn't so hard to get even a mid level QB he would be gone already. The problem of replacing Kyler is due to the lack of QB talent. "He is so mid." Ok, but even mid QBs are hard to find.

I don't think that Michael is going to pay Kyler not to play for the Arizona Cardinals (I'm convinced this is why we hung on to Colt McCoy for so long).

But.

Kyler has a $22MM base salary in 2026 and $19.5MM base salary in 2027. Those salaries would be plenty appetizing for a team like the Saints or Steelers or Jets or whomever doesn't have an above-average option but wants to compete.

The alternative? How could anyone look at the last 7 years of Kyler at that point and want more of it? If after this year he's still a middling QB, and we don't make the playoffs, it would be absurd to run it back again. Draft someone, trade someone, anything other than rolling another year with a guy who has proven he's never going to be a top QB.

Then spend the draft assets to target a QB you like or draft one - just sticking with a mid-QB who doesn't get you to the playoffs (in a league where half the teams make it!) is just ridiculous.

Exactly. We already know what we'll get with K1. Give me the unknown any day over more of this.

I hard disagree on this, RN. But I also disagreed on a hard reset. I'm not a fan of prolonged bad football.

The Jets thought they were getting the next Patrick Mahomes when they drafted Zach Wilson. I'd rather watch Kyler Murray 100 times out of 100 than Mack Jones.

You're assuming something that isn't guaranteed! There are plenty of examples of teams that dumped a mid QB and became better. If we're so unambitious that we stick with a QB that almost never leads teams to the playoffs, then we get what we deserve.

I don't think I've seen one person make this comparison.

You know, there are other options in the QB universe than Mack Jones, right?

Kyler has NEVER led a team to the playoffs. We backed in with help from other teams the year he was embarrassed by the Rams. He couldn't win a playoff-clinching game to save his life.

Does Gil Brandt's opinion mean anything to you?

Obviously a sub-Kyler Murray result isn't guaranteed. But let's look at all the first-round QBs drafted in the two years before and after Kyler:

2021 1 1 Trevor Lawrence Jaguars Clemson - SAME LEVEL
2021 2 2 Zach Wilson Jets Brigham Young - WORSE
2021 3 3 Trey Lance 49ers North Dakota State - WORSE
2021 11 11 Justin Fields Bears Ohio State - WORSE
2021 15 15 Mac Jones Patriots Alabama - WORSE

2020 1 1 Joe Burrow Bengals Louisiana State - BETTER
2020 5 5 Tua Tagovailoa Dolphins Alabama - SAME LEVEL
2020 6 6 Justin Herbert Chargers Oregon - BETTER
2020 26 26 Jordan Love Packers Utah State - SAME LEVEL
2019 1 1 Kyler Murray Cardinals Oklahoma - ACTUALLY KYLER
2019 6 6 Daniel Jones Giants Duke - WORSE
2019 15 15 Dwayne Haskins Redskins Ohio State - WORSE (RIP)

2018 1 1 Baker Mayfield Browns Oklahoma - SAME LEVEL
2018 3 3 Sam Darnold Jets USC - SAME LEVEL
2018 7 7 Josh Allen Bills Wyoming - BETTER
2018 10 10 Josh Rosen Cardinals UCLA - WORSE
2018 32 32 Lamar Jackson Ravens Louisville - BETTER
2017 2 2 Mitchell Trubisky Bears North Carolina - WORSE
2017 10 10 Patrick Mahomes Chiefs Texas Tech - BETTER
2017 12 12 Deshaun Watson Texans Clemson - BETTER, THEN WORSE

This is obviously a rough heuristic, but by my count, over a five-year sample size, 19 QBs were selected, nine are clearly worse than Kyler, and five are clearly better.

By my math that's a 74% chance you're the same or worse off at the end of the day. You're just changing the package.
