I dislike Carmelo as much as the next guy, but part of being a good coach means utilizing and adjusting to the talent you have on hand. And thats a lot of why I think Mike D is a bad coach. But even pre-Melo the Knicks had been bouncing around .500 that season. The next year when lowly Mike Woodson took over the Knicks were 18-24 and went 18-6 the rest of the way.
This year its more of the same from Mike. His team runs around, they dont play D (3rd worst in the league), they get smashed on the glass (worst in the league), and they jack up 3s. If the 3s fall they have a chance, if they dont they get flattened. Yeah, he has a young team and a lot of cast offs, but their short comings have been consistent of all his teams. They dont rebound because they have so many guys leaking out to try and create breaks and they dont play D because he puts no emphasis on it.
I'm not saying that Laker team should be winning a ton of games but it would be nice to see Mike evolve as a coach. His team is getting killed on the glass every night, sitting on his bench is Jordan Hill, 5th in the NBA in rebound rate. But he only plays 20 minutes a game, because Mike wants someone who can stretch the floor as his PF. So he lets Shawne Williams, a chucker who ATTEMPTS 3s but does not make them and stinks across the board, play 20 minutes a night because he fits Mike's system.
Its crap like that, and that it took until april last year to realize Gasol and Howard being on the same roster was not some kind of detriment, that has me convinced Mike D'Antoni is a bad coach. If he was not comically stubborn then he MIGHT be a good coach, but he is so pig headed about addressing the weaknesses his system creates that it undermines everything that he is actually good at.
