"What lies in the shadow of the statue" must be a code word of sorts. They were standing over a large box that appears to be able to hold a casket.

The smoke monsters "home" has yet another reference to Anubis which is likely what the statue feet are of as well.

Richard is most definitely Egyptian.

Yes, I had to consult my Stargate guide to figure that reference out. If this island turns out to be Atlantis, I'm going to call plagiarism. LOL

Anubus, Ancient God of Egypt:

Anubis was keeper of the afterlife, the one who guided spirits after they left the body. He was also considered the patron of lost souls and orphans.

Now here's the image on the wall Ben saw before greeting Smokey:

Richard Alpert = servant of God? Is the Island God?

The real Richard Alpert's Hindu name, Ram Dass, means servant of God.

Is the Island God?

I'm not certain the writers meant such a direct correlation, no more than John Locke is loosely based on the real John Locke, etc. More likely, they referenced the real Richard Alpert's work as founder of the Hanuman Foundation which, IMO, was almost as creepy as Lost's Hanso Foundation. Hanuman had some ... unique ideas on how to reform prisoners.

Awesome episode. Loved that Locke called out Ben about having to ask a lot of questions. LOVED that Desmond kicked Ben's ass and that Ben seemed to have somewhat of a conscious.

Am gonna rewatch this episode over the weekend.

If you guys think that case was big enough to hold a casket, my vote is for Charles Widmore being inside it :)

Good theory, but Ben talked to Charles the day of the flight.

We don't know where he called Charles or how much time passed after Ben hit the water.

Also, I think the newbies work for Charles. When our good pilot returned he didn't know the password they were trying to get him to say.

Man, they were setting up Ben to die the whole episode, doing a good job of making him a sympathetic character, with feelings and emotion and everything.

Then he lives, and it looks like he wanted to die. But I guess he probably would rather be dead than have to be a follower of Locke.

Great episode! Man - the Desmond/Ben/Penny stuff, immediately followed by the temple stuff, was edge of the seat.

BTW, good ideas re: what's in the box and who Alpert might be...

Oh, and how good are the actors who play Ben and Locke? Man - especially when the writing is top-notch, they are just amazing.

I know a couple people that are big fans of the show and they are convinced that Desmond and Penny will probably never re-appear on the show since both their stories have been completed. I'd hate for Desmond's last appearance to be a couple quick shots of him beating Ben to a pulp.

Me, too.

I don't think Desmond is finished on the show. Remember what Faraday's mother said to him? "The island's not finished with you yet, Desmond." I think we could see some more stuff happen with him down the line.

This was really a fantastic episode. The guy who plays Ben is one of those actors that, if I saw in real life, I would probably be scared and walk the other way. (Kinda like Nicholson after The Shining.)

I don't either. One thing about Lost. They have a tendency to show you a small blip of a scene, only to come back to it or show you what happened after it. They do that alot on this show.

Plus, I also thought of what "ma" Faraday told Desmond.

Plus, isn't Faraday's constant Desmond? That means he'll be back...

An upcoming episode is titled "The Variable". It will have Desmond in it I'm convinced.

Correct. Had forgot about that one. Where the hell is Faraday anyway?

In the caves doing research. Remember the season premier. He was in the cave when they discovered something strange.

I don't know. Maybe you are right but if you search on-line, you'll find out that you are the only person to have figured it out.

Daniel became a construction worker for the Initiative. He witnessed the early construction of the Orchid station, and passed Pierre Chang in an underground shaft there. ("Because You Left")

Charlotte also suggested that, when she was on the Island as a child, Daniel told her to leave the Island and never return, or else she would die. ("This Place Is Death")

When Jack, Kate, and Hurley returned to the island in 1977, Sawyer mentioned Faraday. Jack asked, "He's here?" Sawyer responded, "Not anymore." ("Namaste")

That is the scene I am talking about. How am I the the only one who figured it out. You just found it yourself.

Except you're under the assumption that all of that was happening at the same time. We haven't seen Chang's infant son at all in the 1977 scenes with Kate, Jack, Sawyer, etc. It's easy to assume it's at the same time, but when Sawyer says that Faraday isn't there anymore, that kinda throws a wrench into your assumption. There's no clear-cut way to determine if the time periods match.

And as we all know, assuming anything in this show is the kiss of death.

I guess that I'm reading more out of Sawyer saying "Not anymore" than you are.

Kind of a so-so episode for me even with the plot enhancements (Miles and The Orchid). I can't say I expected the ending though.
