This was predictable. I just didn't think they would fire him so soon. And the D'Antoni rumors were also predictable with Nash there.

Exactly; I thought it would take until mid-season.

I think D'Antoni would fit there. He would certainly get the spacing right. I thought I heard somewhere that DA may have had knee replacement surgery and he would be out for 6 weeks. Not sure if it is correct. No problem there, Nash knows the system and could help implement it. It would not need be a system focused solely on Steve creating shots with Kobe there.

Holy crap, after five games? That's insane.

D'Antoni would be hilarious. I could see that actually working.

A chance for vindication for D'Antoni and his system. I could see it working as well.

D'Antoni makes sense... Kobe reveres him, Nash owes 3ish MVP caliber seasaons to him, and this would be the best defensive team DA would have to work with.

But, if people are concerned about the number of minutes Kobe plays now, they'll be livid if DA joins.

Could D'Antoni work with defensive teams? Seriously!

His shortcomings caught up with him in Phoenix. His shortcomings caught up with him in New York. In a wasted two years, they'd catch up with him in L.A.

He makes a splash during the regular season where offense makes up 98% of the highlight reels. But Mike _'Antoni is not a playoff coach.

I have had a warm spot for the Lakers going back to the days of Elgin Baylor and Jerry West and Magic Johnson. The people of L.A. deserve better than D'Antoni.

'Just one NBA fan's opinion.

And the Lakers dont even have a bench for Mike to ignore.

But seriously, if those guys were younger they could run Mike's system. But those old Lakers will be gassed/injured in a few short months of Mike running them into the ground.

I would guess that the Lakers will beg Phil Jackson to return - though I don't know what sort of terms they and he parted on. D'Antoni wouldn't surprise me and I think he'd do better than almost anyone else if Nash were playing - in that case he wouldn't have to install any sort of offense, just turn the ball over to Steve and make little tweaks on the fly. Who knows better than Mike what works best for players playing with Nash.

As much as I dislike D'A, I've always said he'd be my first choice if I wanted a coach to take over a random group of players and get them playing together in the minimum amount of time as he's inclined to give them freedom to do their own thing. Taking over a team in disarray isn't quite the same thing but in the short run he's probably as good as any outsider would be.

I've had a great deal of admiration for players like Magic and Kareem but I've never had a warm spot for the Lakers. The Lakers have already experienced better. Let them experience worse although their ownership, money and the league will not let it happen. They could do far worse than DA.

A big reason Phil Jackson left was about his health--he's had back problems for years. Laker fans I work with don't think he will be an option because of that.

I hope that they don't bring back Jackson. I'm tired of players and coaches who keep retiring and then come back just to do it all over again.

If Phil Jackson comes back to coach the Lakers, it would be because the second largest NBA market in the country needs him to straighten things out. It is not easy overseeing a bunch of superstars.

D'Antoni proved in the largest NBA market that he couldn't do it. I'd be shocked if L.A. chose him over Jackson.

I don't think they'll choose Mike over Phil but I do think Dantoni can win there. Whether he can win it all might be another thing as I don't know if they really have the horses to compete with OKC and Miami. It all depends on how much Kobe has left in the tank. I also don't think Dantoni "proved" anything in New York other than his system won't work with a ball stopper such as Carmelo. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the Kobe of late is all that different from Melo. If they can turn back the Kobe clock 3 years, this team could win it all with Phil, Mike or Jerry Sloan for that matter.

When I saw the article listing the leading possibilities, I put Jerry Sloan high on the list, too. Only one of our short list, though, has led his teams to NBA championships, let alone many NBA championships.

Kobe can't turn the clock back but with the superstars surrounding him, I believe there is only one coach who would make a difference in their post-season. The Zen Master.

Since moving to Phoenix 34 years ago, I root for teams in the West to be strong in the post-season, if my team isn't a serious challenger. I don't want to see Miami win it. L.A. or OKC would be OK with me.

To finish the Kobe era, or even just transition into the Dwight Howard era, I think Phil Jackson is the best hope for the West.

I think Phil's their best bet too but I don't know if the Lakers will want to meet his salary demands in addition to the Brown buyout. I could even see them going with what would almost definitely be their least expensive option, Brian Shaw.

Hey, that would be turning Kobe's clock back, wouldn't it? :)

He'd have something to prove. And if it represented the Lakers front office admitting a mistake, that should be the least of their concerns.

As I've posted, I also think that investing in Steve Nash in his declining years is going to prove to be another mistake for the front office. The more positive things they can do, such as hiring a coach now who will make them proud all the way through the playoffs, is necessary damage control for them.

If not, signing Dwight Howard would have been another waste.

It will be Phil. This was in the works for a while, it appears.

You almost wonder if the losing was on purpose so that Brown could go and Jackson could come back.

Players initiative? Brown is that bad of a coach, especially with his Princeton offense and this slate of players. Good grief, you really don't need a structured offense with this group.

Too bad. I would love to get that lotto pick.

Jackson will come in and hand out books to read. The players who are literate (Kobe, Nash, Gasol) will read and benefit, those that are functionally iliterate (Artest etc) will get that the coach is smarter than they are.

Yeah, I was listening to LA sports radio just Thursday and this female guest had just had dinner with Buss and was saying it would take a lot more for Brown to get fired. Then the next day, whammo!

I'd love to see it actually. I heard that D'Antoni is out until December following knee surgery though.

I'd love to see Dantoni succeed and I'd love to see Nash get a ring but my dream scenario would be for them to hire Phil and then go on a 60 game losing streak. More than anything, I want that extra lottery pick.
