It is too risky to take odom (injuries and how do we guard SA) and we downgrade with AK, if kobe truly is shunning LA (not sure about this) then it is time to swing a deal such as Marion + ATL pick for him. Kobe obviously can score but now we have another defender so we could have raja/manu kobe/parker and thus stand a chance at playing good defense on that part of SA.

We don't have to include barbosa since both players want out for their respective teams, LA gets a pick and saves some money, what is bad though is we might need to take a salary off their hands as well. Not much chance of this happening though but what the hell..

To be honest though, in the end I would rather just stick it to marion like he has just stuck it to us screwing us over in the KG deal and waiting forever until it was too late to be able to plan and swing a good deal.

He has an opt out next year, so if we keep him this year and he plays like garbage then when he opts he won't get much of his vaunted huge value contract which is all he really cares about.

We are actually pretty screwed here since I bet most teams are getting ready to go and will want to stand pat.

If our FO is really ballsy maybe we could get Elton Brand and Magette from the clippers for Marion + Banks (maybe have to throw in the ATL pick), we would have to concede this year but next year we would be beastly, clippers probably wouldn't do it though. Basically everywhere I turn there is just not any good options or plausable trades since it is so late for marion to pull this bs.

It is time to stick one back to marion finally, for screwing us vs the spurs and then finally screwing us when we were getting ready to go this year.

I've heard just the opposite.

I have as well.

Kobe likes and respects Lamar. He doesn't say that about many people and he made a point to talk about how Lamar played hurt and worked his ass off. When Kobe says that, he respects the hell out of you.

And yes, Kobe is delusional as I am...Odom should not be part of any deal. If the Lakers want to contend they need to find a way to add to Kobe and Odom, not to trade Odom for another similar player in a lateral move.

Making a move just to make it and leaving the team looking different but not playing any different *might* be the one thing that puts Kobe over the edge for good.

if this deal is made, you're gonna have:

Suns
Mavs
Spurs
Utah
Rockets
Denver

all DEFINITELY ahead of the Lakers and it wouldn't surprise me at all if NO was better as well, or the Grizz considering before Gasol's injury-plagued season, they were a two-time 47-50 win team and just added some good talent and a new head coach this year.

Bottom line, with or without Odom or Marion, they're battling it out for the 7, 8 or 9 spot.

I dunno if I agree with your assessment. Our team is fully healthy for the 1st time in years. If the Marion trade goes through we'll have all our guys ready to go at the start of the season. I'd say at best we could be a 4th/5th seed and at worst a 6,7,8. There is no way the Grizz finish ahead of us. I think Utah will be in decline as well, especially with this Kirilenko mess. I wouldn't even put Denver that high. The Rockets are going to be the surprise team this season. They made some great offseason moves.

You seem to believe that Marion would fit in worse in LA than Odom. Have you really been watching games at all? Odom inbounded the ball to himself for christ sakes. What we need is consistency and defense, two things Marion does VERY well. A lot of people say Marion can't create his own shot, but how the hell did he avg 20 ppg when Nash wasn't there? The guy has been a career 20ppg guy no matter what team he's been on. He's just consistent, and that is what we need alongside Kobe. Not flashes of potential.

Nobody is saying Marion would turn the Lakers into contenders. We're still one all-star type player away from being an elite team. However bringing Marion here would be a step in the right direction. As good as Odom is, he just doesn't fit here in LA. If we can unload Cook at the same time, ALL THE BETTER!

i think abomb and donald recognize what most of us suns fans KNOW . . . marion would be atrocious in the triangle.

you lost any credibility you had in regards to knowing marion's game right there. he's a garbage man extraordinaire. and he did play with an effective marbury and kidd prior to nash. his defense is also greatly overrated. and i'm not saying that just b/c he wants out, look back at prior threads and you'll see MANY of us on this board that have thought marion's d has been overrated for years. the one thing you got right was consistency.

you also fail to understand that marion is largely successful due to the mismatches he creates in our offense. he won't get those as frequently playing a traditional 3 spot and you KNOW phil isn't going to use him as a big. speaking of which . . . what would the lakers starting lineup be . . . ?

I'll say this, if the Lakers [mistakenly] trade Odom for Marion, they'd better have a "Los Angeles Welcomes Shawn Marion" parade down downtown LA. It's the only thing that can get him off his period.

what about a package highlighted by david lee? i think that guy would kill in our system.

we'd need to take on a lot of crap to do this though

marion ($16.4M/2yrs)

for

david lee ($1M/2yrs)
malik rose ($7.1M/2yrs)
fred jones ($3.3M/1yr)
dan dickau ($2.8M/1yr)
+ picks

long-term, knicks screwed again, short term huge win though

it seems like we lose out here, but david lee is a beast

10ppg/10reb on 60% fg (!!!), 80%ft and hard-nosed defense in 30 minutes. also really young and 6'9'' 250lbs.

counting growth over the summer, more minutes, and playing in this system, he could easily get an efficient 14ppg/12reb with great defense. not bad?

He's the best rebounder on his team, and he "rips down" 8 rebounds in 39 minutes a game over the last 3 years @ washington, he's weak.

He posted similar numbers for the Warriors, including back-to-back seasons of 8.3 and 8.7. He's not a power rebounder like Garnett or Ben Wallace, obviously, but he's adequate.

He's not strong enough to control an area for the rebound and he's not quick to the ball(like marion).

True, he's not as quick as Marion, but his rebounding fundamentals can hardly be worse.

As a finisher, he doesnt know how to draw contact and score at 6'9", shies away from contact

He averages 4.7 FTA per game, compared to 3.2 for Marion. (For the sake of comparison, Odom is at 4.8, Kirilenko is at 5.3, and Garnett is at 5.2.) We're not talking Stoudemire here, but Jamison holds his own with drawing traffic.

and doesnt have good hands in traffic, isnt quick to the rim(for a lob like marion).

I'll concede those points.

He's notably worse than marion in everything but 3 pt shooting.

No, he is also better at:

* getting to the line
* creating his own shot
* accepting his role within a team concept

Jamison would be a downgrade from Marion in terms of talent, but there is no perfect solution to this problem.

Hmmm. David Lee WOULD be awesome here....

However, we need to take back a 3 somehow....

Marion for Lee/Balkman/Rose/Dickau would be OK in my book....

MY TWO CENTS:

defensively we lose on the wing with shawn, no doubt, BUT offensively its not even close. the ability to post up AND play outside is what odom has over shawn. normally he punishes shawn when he guards him and that size and length of odom's is a nightmare for most defenders. also how would odom do in this wide open offense? he has the same skill set as grant hill but a lil more range. the diaw comparison is NO for the simple fact that diaw is super soft and isnt as aggressive. bottom line, if we get a good second player and odom is healthy, i think we come out a better team.

I think the Suns need an immediate starter at PF back if they trade Marion, and Lee probably isn't ready for that. I suppose the Suns could go with Stoudemire/Diaw and bring Lee off the bench, but Diaw makes me nervous.

Besides Lee, I don't see anyone on the Knicks roster that the Suns would want. Also, it's not clear to me why the Knicks should want Marion.

conversation just ended here.

you're smoking really good hashish if you think the Lakers are gonna end up a 4 or 5 seed.

have you learned nothing from the isiah thomas era?

over-priced talented malcontent? i mean, its a match made in heaven. :)

i also think lee is ready to start coming into his 3rd year. god knows why he wasn't already last year, and he's going to struggle for big minutes with the chubby boys in knick-land.

seriously...

Fischer
Kobe
Marion
Kwame/Turiaf
Bynum

is a horrific team. You have ONE player on that team that can create offense for himself or others and all that guys does primarily is create for himself.

That team is an 8 seed at best which gets their doors blown in in the first round. Yeah.

Shows you know very little about the triangle offense. We need guys who can make smart cuts/passes and can hit open shots. We also need a post presence who can score down low (which neither Odom or Marion can do anyways).

Odom's problem is his consistency. Dude is made of glass. Just having a guy like Marion who can actually play a full season will make an impact.

I agree that what the Lakers are missing is a true 2nd option for offense. We don't have it, but Odom was never fit for that role and neither is Marion. That is a piece that still has yet to be acquired unfortunately.

As far as rankings go for the season, anything can happen. If our team stays healthy we have as good a shot as any at landing that 4th or 5th seed.

No kidding. Holy freaking expletive but what a disaster this summer was. First the Suns lose the ATL pick, then they have a blockbuster trade in place that Marion vetoes, and now Marion is saying he wants out anyway. This is a nightmare.

Heh, it started earlier than that. How about losing the Spurs series to crooked refs and bogus suspensions. That's where it started going down hill.

no you don't. and you don't have a schedule this year that gives you 19 of your first 23 games at home. I know what Lamar is - I know how frustrating he is, especially to most Laker fans. I also know what Marion is and what he's not - which is not a good passer and not someone who can post. The fact that you don't have a second option with either Marion or Odom is what dooms you to mediocrity - no matter which one is there.

Ok finally we agree on something. This trade is the epitome of a lateral trade. BUT, Marion's strengths will help us out more than Lamar's right now. Marion plays great defense. Having him and Kobe on the perimeter will be a very good thing, our team defense was atrocious last year.

I disagree. Marion is never hurt and Lamar misses 20 games every year. Even considering that Marion makes more money than Lamar, he's still a better value.
