According to Cinematical, screenwriter James Vanderbilt has turned in a working draft for Spider-Man 4 to Sony Pictures. They say his story arc encompasses two films, opening up the possiblity that the studio might shoot the fourth and fifth film at the same time...

Latino Review is discussing the rumored replacement of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spidey.

A couple of names they say are being mentioned are: Patrick Fugit and Michael Angarano (pics of each at the above link)

I'm really not surprised as Tobey almost walked away from this role before because of his ailing back.

As I'm sure you are aware, BIM, there were those who said it had more to do with his aching wallet than it did with his ailing back.... ;)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire (upcoming Inkheart), who won a Pulitzer in 2007 for his drama "Rabbit Hole," is in final negotiations to write Spider-Man 4 for Columbia Pictures.

Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are back as director and star, respectively, as are series producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. Kirsten Dunst also is expected to return for the latest movie featuring the Marvel Comics character.

Plot details are under lock and key.

James Vanderbilt previously wrote a draft of Spider-Man 4.

Lindsay-Abaire's "Rabbit Hole," which starred Cynthia Nixon and Tyne Daly, hit the Broadway stage in 2006 and won four Tonys, including best play. The writer also is known for the play "Fuddy Meers."

That's all cool. Now give us a great wrap-up movie and let everyone walk away happy.
After that, no more Spider-Man movies!

What????? Why? Especially when Marvel gets the rights back and can fold him into their "cinematic marvel universe."

Just because the last one sucked doesn't mean that they'll all suck from here on out.

I'd actually rather see Rami move on and get some new blood in there. Same with McGuire. He's bugging me in that role now. but I think there are plenty people with a lot of love for that character that will do right by the franchise.

If they get rid of Dunst, I might watch them again.

I'll watch them no matter what. I won't go to the theatre to see them, but the sound and video quality of these are amazing. The story is ok too.

I don't think the last one was so bad it deserved to kill the franchise, I just believe sometimes things need to be put to bed.

If Sam and Tobey move on (as much good as they did for comic movies in the modern era) it will help breathe new life into it, but I do believe that sometimes breaks are good.

Like the Batman franchise, let it lie for awhile then come back later.

Source: New York Post

Everyone's getting in on the action trying to guess what to expect from Sam Raimi's return to the Marvel superhero franchise with Spider-Man 4, slated for release on May 6, 2011. It's obviously still very early in development, but that didn't stop the New York Post from asking Sony producer Todd Black a few questions in order to clear up some of the rumors that have been circulating.

In the article, Black confirms that Kirsten Dunst is definitely on board, but that there are no plans to have a wedding between Peter Parker and Mary Jane in the forthcoming movie. He also squashed the rumors that Morbius the Living Vampire will be the villain in the movie, but that the villain will be very New York centric.

This is what he told the Post about the potential villain: "We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

------------------

Finally, The Lizard ??

Lizard makes sense as a good villain, but aside from being a teacher at NYU I fail to see strong city-connection.
Kingpin could be a crossover baddy.
Molten Man's a local.

I don't get why this guy's fixated on the villain's permanent address, just make a movie that learned from the predecessor's mistakes.

Knowing how Marvel operates, I'm surprised they don't just remake the first movie and call it a relaunch.

Crossover? He first appeared in Spider-Man #50. He was a Spidey villain first.

Maybe you're just referring to his appearance in the Daredevil film. Since he appeared in that and that film was put out by 20th Century Fox - it would likely require a rights acquisition by Sony Pictures to get him into Spider-Man 4.

Other possibilities:

Kraven
Scorpion
Black Cat
Chameleon
Hammerhead
The Enforcers
Man-Wolf
Vulture
Smythe and his Spider-Slayers...

I'll bet he lives in the NYC sewers, and Doc Connors has already made appearances in the film.

There is very little doubt in my mind the next villain is the Lizard, but as I said in another SM thread somwhere, I think the Lizard is a better 3rd villain. He's too mindless to make a primary foil in a movie, IMO.

Unless they somehow went with the newer version of the Lizard that is in the comics that has actually evolved into a smarter creature, I agree with you. Ideally they would do the Kraven stroyline with the Lizard replace Vermin as the one that they hunt. Of course they'd have to change the ending

Kraven killing himself worked in the comics but would be highly anti-climatic in a movie

Most likely they would use one of the more known villains so I doubt some of those on BIM's list would work (although as a comic geek I wouldn't mind some of them).

Scorpion - possible
Chameleon - possible
Lizard - possible (ideal as a second villain)
Kraven - ideal
Vulture - possible
Shocker - doubtful
Electro - if they gave him a makeover, he could be a decent movie villain
Mysterio - doubtful
Rhino - possible only as a second villain
Moerbius -possible
Carnage - I'm guessing they're saving him for the sixth and final Spidey film (if you really believe Marvel only wants to make 6 of them)

Black Cat - not really a villain but I'm guessing she will be involved at some point. They did introduce her alter ego in the last one.

I did mean it as a reference to the Daredevil film, using Duncan-Clark, and it was a sloppy one. And I have to admit, I think of Kingpin as a Daredevil villain when he was at his best (although the Ultimate Kingpin in USM was quite good).

Since he appeared in that and that film was put out by 20th Century Fox - it would likely require a rights acquisition by Sony Pictures to get him into Spider-Man 4.

I did not know this. You're a knowledge bomb.

What I pulled from the producer blurb is that NYC residents would identify strongly with the villain because of his roots. The producer thinks the audience will recognize their own sewer system :)D)?
I agree that the Lizard probably can't hold his own story. He'd work best as an opening 30 minute setup to the rest of the movie. Introduce him, catch him, move on.

My short list:
Lizard - workable
Kraven - interesting
Rhino - like lizard
Black Cat - boobs

Sony Pictures is rebooting Spider-Man in 2012...

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the "Spider-Man" franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

Does anyone know when Marvel Studios gets sole ownership of Spider-Man's film rights? ...or the FF, for that matter? It'll be great when they can truly weave the tapestry of the marvel universe in film.
