This makes me chuckle. As one of the leaders of the slow and steady plan, what you’re basically saying is what A LOT of said during FA while sitting on 30 million dollars. But now you think we should do this and ALSO give up multiple first rounders?
I see your point... It's however NOT as simple as you make it out to be.
1. Let's be clear. What I have said again and again is I get what Monti wants to do and I like it. I never said Monti should just sit on all that cap space without doing nothing.
2. I would never suggest this if the last two draft classes didn't look somewhat the part at this point. I believe that it looks like we could potentially only be 2 quality players away if the draft class(s) develop as it they look like.
3. What has changed in how you perceive my opinion. Simple... There were very few elite players in free agency to sign at critical positions. Who said that Monti didn't try and was told "Sorry No" for the few quality players available.
Quite a few teams are complete dumpster fires this early in the season. That leaves the door open for firesale. If a bonafide younger player like Garrett would become available - I would go for it in a heartbeat.
4. I am actually very disappointed with the excess cap space. I do get the part of not overpaying unless the player fit we certain criteria, bur SUPER disappointed that the excess space wasn't used to secure the team better for the future by extending core players. Froholdt made me glad. Collins surprised me, but okay considering the price tag. That White and HErnandez weren't extended is baffling for me
