The box on this one surprised me. I thought it would do well but not this well. That really goes for the international about to hit $700m. $160m more than domestic. For this film I would have thought that domestic would outpace internationals. Good on Pixar for getting something good out that's driving box office.

I'll be interested to see if it keeps up now that Despicable Me 4 is out. At the start of the year I thought that only it and maybe Deadpool would be the only billion dollar films this year.

I’m not that surprised that it’s huge. Maybe surprised that it’s THIS huge though. But, the first one was really Pixar’s last original that was a smash hit while being universally beloved. And I think people have been dying for any kind of event movie with the slate being light the first half of the year and this came closest to fitting the bill.

Yeah, I meant this huge. I was thinking around $800m, maybe $900 on the high end, which would still be huge right now. I just didn't think it would hit the billion mark. I didn't realize there was so much pent up demand that would go to it. I was betting on Despicable Me 4 getting most of that. But with the way it started they're both going to be super huge.

I think DP4 under performs a little. Probably tops out at 250-275 mill domestic.

It’s got another couple weeks before Marvel comes back to annihilate everyone in the market with Deadpool v. Wolverine.

After PPV it will get damn close. That's not even including the merch tie ins. Including that this it could blow past a billion. This is a huge win for Disney.

Really on DP4? It did $132m with the holiday opening and even Sunday was strong at $21m. I'd expect it to more than double from there. I had been thinking $5-600m domestic with international pushing it over the b mark.

And yup, then everything else is dead once Deadpool hits.

Sorry, those numbers in my last post were what I had been speculating before it came out. It's already passed a billion and is sitting at about 1.2b.

Yeah I knew globally. I was referring to domestic. I posted global above. This thing is going to make a lot more than just box office when you add all the merch turning and PPV, disc sales etc.

No way it gets close to 500. It’s already projected to drop to 33 million this weekend. And also, it was 122 million and that wasn’t for the 3 day, it was for 5 days as they released it Wednesday before the holiday. First 5 days for Out 2 was 205 million, and that’s a Friday - Tuesday run, with no holiday thrown in there.

275 might a little low for DP4, but it’s already got competition with Out 2 and Marvel’s looming on the horizon.

I’m gonna be way wrong here. Despicable had a pretty impressive 2nd weekend hold of -40% and is already at 211 million domestic, with big weekday grosses. This easily clears 300 with the edge on the kids market for another 10 days before Deadpoolverine comes out.

Also, how has no one coined that portmanteau yet?

Yeah, it's still going strong. The weekday numbers are matching the weekend ones too which is huge for it. I'm curious to see how the legs are on it though with Deadpool. Mainly due to DM4 being a "kids" movie and Deadpool being rated R. It might not cut the legs out from this as bad as if it was a SW, MCU, Indy Johns, etc.

I'm thinking now though that a billion is probably off the table for DM4. I think it's looking now like I had my guesses backwards between it and Inside Out. They're both going to end up in the range I thought the other would do with Inside Out doing a bit better.

This thing is a juggernaut. Something my oldest daughter told me. She said some of her friends have seen it multiple times because they love and can relate to character being a small fish in a bigger pond and the emotions tied to that.
